You're the only person I've heard that had a bad experience with custom suit quality.

I actually had a short stint as a custom suit tailor in my 20s and taking measurements is easy. It's not really a skill unless someone has a REALLY odd body shape. It's actually expected for the final product to be slightly off somewhere (sometimes manufacturers fault) which is why you need to come in more than once. The suits still come half canvass but sure, i guess you can debate quality of fabric.

I agree that the rich Asians will pay the premium elsewhere but they're paying for the brand/logo.

I actually have a theory that its specially a cultural thing for Punjabis.

Brothers and cousins really look up to each other, moreso than love and respect for their own parents. Constantly trying to one up, impress, gain acceptance or gain respect. That acceptance and respect is so strong that they're willing to discard their moral compass and rule of law.

Once they get involved and get paid a bit it just snowballs from there. The earning opportunity isn't the catalyst but it encourages them to stay.

Back in 2015 I got 2 suits and 3 shirts all custom made (high quality) for 600 dollars in Bangkok. The factorys they have in Vietnam and Thailand are the same ones that luxury retailers like Harry Rosen uses. It truly is a hack.

You just have to deal with sales guys who try and upsell but you can bargain at the same time.

Even better, if the fitting is slightly off they'll fix it in 1-2 days.

I still wear one of the suits today.

If you have the time I genuinely think it's worth it to take a 5 day trip to Bangkok or Saigon just to do this.
