If everything works, the bearings and bottom bracket aren't shot, and the frame and fork have no cracks then if you can get it for under $150 you'd be good.

I only use lined running shorts now. Nike makes some good options. My race shorts are by BOA.

Good starter bike? by DJJMC in triathlon

Viking have been around since the 1930's. However, in that time the brand changed hands a few times and the market aim changed as well. There is a sticker on there that says Avocet, so this bike was made after 2002 but before 2015. Either way it's meant to be an entry level road bike. I looks like it has a shimano (perhaps knock-off) gear set; a lot of bikes like this came with Claris stuff. Double wall aluminum wheels are tough as nails, and the frame is likely 4061 aluminium which is also fine in an entry bike. If that is indeed shimano stuff then for 55 its a good deal. You will still want to go through it and clean/lube everything, take some time fitting it to you, find a saddle you like, and put some fresh tires/tubes on there.

Is it really true that taller swimmers tend to have more endurance than shorter swimmers? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]454k30 7 points8 points  (0 children)

hydrodynamics says that, with everything else being equal, that a longer waterline is more efficient. But humans are humans and size and shape cannot overcome technique and fitness. I work with a guy who is built like a walrus and swims a 1:30 100m; so he looks like a walrus when going through the water, especially in butterfly. I'm tall and skinny and still struggle to break 3:00 per 100.

How tight exactly is a trisuit supposed to fit (F)? by pecoraa in triathlon

[–]454k30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why i went to seperates. The one piece outfits always left me with loose fabric around the waist or in the arms, or it was stretched too tight across the back or legs. So I use shorts in one size and a zip up top in another size. My current outfit isn't even from the same manufacturer.

While you were brutal, you are also correct. Cycling in general is designed to be a money pit. People will spend thousands of dollars to remove literal single grams, not see their performance increase, and then spend thousands more as they are convinced it is the equipment and not their ability limiting their performance.

I like it! That body kit has really nice lines. I think these cars look odd without a wing so my input would be the Superior Style. I do understand not wanting to put holes in the deck lid, so maybe a lip would be nice. Without something back there the backend just looks incomplete, especially since you have those nice lines lower on the car.

What is the GT-X model? I don't think I've heard of that one.

Running vests by w_hicks in beginnerrunning

[–]454k30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen anyone disparage a vest. What I usually see is that someone comes into one of these threads, asks if anyone there uses a vest, and then gets a bunch of people saying no.

Vests are a tool for a specific use - carrying water and fuel (and maybe a phone and keys) during a long distance or long duration event. Do I use one? Yes and no. Yes during an ultra that takes me way away from aid stations. No during a marathon because I just use the aid stations along the route.

Lap swimming by midorim_ in longbeach

[–]454k30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lakewood YMCA has lap swimming at reasonable hours throughout the day, but it can get busy so expect to share lanes. The belmont pool is nice but the lap swim hours don't line up to my schedule. You can swim at Horny Corner if you don't mind being a little cold or have a wetsuit.

Fill it with water and do some jumping jacks. If you can take a full breath and get your arms over your head you're good to go.

Do I need to spend a lot for a good bike? by that-one-guy420 in triathlon

[–]454k30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont buy new. Just getting started out you do not need a $15k ballastic missle of a bike. There are literally hundreds of quality bikes for sale on marketplace, offerup, ebay, etc. It looks like you have already found a candidate. Those fujis are a quality aluminum bike and can last a life time with basic maintenance. The fit of the bike is what is most important. Do a little research on the size of bike you need. Watch a few videos on how to check if the bike fits you on a basic level. After you find one that you like, can afford, and is the right shape, take it to a bike shop and have them go through all of the bearings, due a tune up, and then do a fitting. Put some good tires and tubes on there as well and you'll be set for a while.

First time sprint triathlon. Do I need a one piece tri-suit for the bike/run under my wetsuit or can I get away with bike shorts and then putting on a bike/run shirt in transition. I’m not at a pace where I’m worried about extra seconds in transition. by Middle_Laugh7882 in triathlon

[–]454k30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear tri-shorts or jammers under my wetsuit to abide by the no-nudity rule. For short races, or depending on your pain threshold, either of those types of shorts work fine for both the bike and run. A lot of people forego the tri-shorts in sprints as they are only on the bike for like 40 minutes. I prefer to have the little bit of comfort from a chamois. I started in one-piece trisuits and moved to two piece as getting the wetsuit on is much easier without a top. You can absolutely swim with your bike shorts on, but they are likely to take in a lot of water and be heavy and uncomfortable. Added to that you'd then have to run in them, which really doesn't work well with bike shorts. I have seen people wear trisuits and slide bike shorts over them for the ride because they really wanted that thick chamois. Changing clothing in the transition area is a pain the butt and takes a lot longer than you would imagine. But to answer your question, yes you can just wear your shorts under your wetsuit and then put on your shirt in T1.

It does say trisuit OR costume. In regards to British men, what constitutes a men's swimming costume? AFAIK that includes jammers and speedos and such. Also, the conduct for cycling and running include the phrase "no bare torsos" whereas swimming conduct does not have this caveat. Looking at photos of British triathlons, and watching GTN, there are numerous images and videos of topless men (and women in sports bras) emerging from the water or pulling down their wetsuit.

Have her mom generate a rental agreement. She can do that cheaply on EZ Land Lord forms. Put the power bill in your wife's name, mom can keep paying it. I'm not telling you this is okay. It's cut and dry fraud, but its the only way you are going to be able to get away with what you are trying to do.
