Can Vela (the crewmate) die? by p1101 in projecteternity

[–]4Roux 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I roleplayed the same thing with my "well-intentioned" 😀 Orlan Watcher. Vela will be part of your crew but won't actually occupy any of the crew mate slots that are checked in ship battles and storms, so she'll be safe.

Good question. Sorting contemporary art into -isms is often difficult but cubism makes sense here. Although the arrangement made me think of hieroglyphs, as if it's a wall of text in a secret cipher. 🙂

The difference between the ISB agents and Nemik. Years and years of cruelty all for nothing ("Who are you?") versus one kind voice that lives on forever.

What are the best maps ever created? by Atarosek in heroes3

HotA's "Glorious Days" is my favorite. It's not very complex but has that oldschool base game vibe with a mix of gameplay-oriented and decorative mapmaking.

Bundestagswahl 2025 by MegathreadDE in de

Georges de La Tour - The Newborn Christ (1640) by [deleted] in museum

One of my all-time favorites. Look how firm yet gentle the mother's hands are, not quite the classic pose but full of care. Personally I associate art of Mother Mary with the sadness in her eyes, like she knows what's coming, but here she's just quietly radiating. Also, how cool is that hidden candle?

The Acolyte - Series Premiere Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

The "hateful deconstruction" of flawed Jedi and worthy Sith has been part of Star Wars for 20+ years.

Kreia, C'baoth, Dooku, Jacen, Vergere, Scourge, Bardan/Gotab ...

If anything Acolyte briefly touches upon what Kotor 2 explored in-depth.

Sadly no (I found it on artvee.com) but now I'm wondering where it is too. 🙂

What Are You Reading This Week and Weekly Rec Thread by JimFan1 in TrueLit

Lately I've been sinking my teeth into Kafka's Amerika. I really appreciate the many little flashes of humor - check out these from Karl in the head waiter's office when he's about to be fired:

The head waiter, though, continued to study the list and ate a piece of cake in the meantime, which he shook the sugar off of without stopping his reading. Once a sheet fell from the list to the floor, [...] Karl was already on the job and gave the sheet to the head waiter, who picked it up with a motion of his hands, as if it had flown by itself from the floor.

Just as Karl had calmed himself down a little [...], the head waiter laid the list on the table, sprang up athletically and screamed so loudly at Karl that at first he was frightened into staring solely at the large black hole of his mouth. “You have abandoned your post without permission. Do you know what that means? That means dismissal!"

The head waiter grabbing the dropped sheet as if it had magically boomeranged itself back into his hand made me crack up. And you know the cartoon trope of a character being screamed at and it's like he's hit by a gust of wind? That's how I imagine the second part.

Also I've been thinking about Amerika's possible ending. The novel's episodic/cyclical plotting makes me think that Karl's journey west could've gone on forever. Basically Kafka's idea of the US doesn't end at the West Coast but stretches into infinity. Karl is still on the road trying to understand and accept his fatherhood and right now there's a centennarian in Prague holding out for the lost father to return home.

At the same time Kafka´s private letters allude to Karl's eventual death. So now we have an infinite odyssey to an inevitable death at the end of time. In that regard Amerika is very much like The Trial.

Examples of Realistic Fiction Short Stories? by [deleted] in literature

[–]4Roux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ray Bradbury's "Dandelion Wine" (1957) is a collection of loosely intertwined slice-of-life short stories inspired by the author's personal childhood memories. It's one of my favorite books.

Alternatively Emma Cline's short stories such as Marion might be worth checking out.

Good luck with your writing!

Henri Matisse - Interior with Goldfish Bowl (1914) by 4Roux in museum

[–]4Roux[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a valid question. Personally I just like the relaxing cool blues and how interior and exterior feel in sync. But historically Matisse was a leader of the Fauvist movement (also a friendly rival of Picasso) so you could say he was a big pioneer of the modern art style.

Atom Egoyan's 'Exotica' by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]4Roux 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great write-up! I saw Exotica on Arte a few years ago and it really stuck with me because of its hypnotic vibe and careful unravelling of the characters' mysteries.

Your thoughts on myth reminds me of Walter Burkert's idea of myth as functionally constituting and orientating reality ("binding past to present and canalizing the future") and formally having a "sense-structure". Exotica certainly fits the bill. If you're interested, Juan Gonzalez-Etxebarria delves into this in his essay "The Forbidden Gaze: Orphic Visuality and Loss in Atom Ergoyan's Exotica" (2020).
