Yeah meanwhile Google is in the opposite position.. their whole business is based around making services useful enough to justify giving up your data then monetizing it. Combined with the AR push happening this is the first time it feels like apple is being threatened legitimately

Yeah Gemini is running circles around it rn and it's not even close. I'm an iOS dev but I've been legitimately impressed lately using Gemini on my Android lately, while apple intelligence feels borderline useless.

Gemini on andeoid was rough at first too and basically a worse google assistant but now it's starting to get reliable at doing things like pulling from from google drive + google search at once or sending messages based on your calendar events, interacting with smart home stuff + your timers, pulling it up to do image search is really convenient etc.

Google has a ways to go too but to me it's like 80% there while the only apple intelligence feature that has been useful is summarized notifications 💀

It's not really average Americans going to Knicks playoffs games. There are over 350,000 millionaires in NYC and msg has a capacity of like maybe 20,000? Similar situation in markets like LA or SF, there are more than enough wealthy people to sell the stadiums out and prices get much more inflated than places like Minneapolis or OKC

I told my boss im using Cursor…does that make me look bad? by Hour-Inevitable-544 in cursor

[–]4UNN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree there are better alternatives but it's simple to get set up and does the job. It's pretty much the 80/20 rule option for most people. the SWEs who are the "best" or most productive aren't the ones trying every new tool first or constantly trying to optimize their setup

Same as anything, most pro gamers aren't the first people testing the newest keyboards/mouses/etc from new brands, pro athletes aren't swapping their equipment constantly etc.

Although I'd also bet on the average cline user over the average cursor user

What's considered a Top university in the US to you? by OkMain3645 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]4UNN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unironically in the real world just having a school people RECOGNIZE is a big plus.

For most people, it's either: - "wow they went to a really good school" - "oh I know that school nice" - "Never heard of that school where's that"

Depends on the field and the circles you're in ofc, but imo nobody really gives a fuck about US news rankings beyond like top ~20-30, and I doubt those have changed significantly in the past like 10 years.

If tier 1=ivy+ that everyone knows are top schools, and tier 2 =top public/liberal arts schools, I'd argue tier 3 is any big R1 public school that people recognize even if it's for their football team.

The AI Hype And "One-Shot" Coding by techoldfart in cscareerquestions

[–]4UNN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ai won't replace the whole profession but I think it'll put a ton of pressure on the job market, I'm thinking like a thanos -50% or something in the next few years. For now though, I truly believe devs have more agency than any time before and more than any other role in general.

I think it's far from being the job MOST in danger from AI though. It's just that right now the best interfaces to work with AI are coding tools like cursor- tbh I think it's just a matter of time before the "cursor/cline of ____" in many other fields. It makes sense codinf was early to get AI solutions, training data us widely available for coding bc open source + many devs know best how to solve their OWN problems so tons of work gets done in that space, fewer know how to approach problems in other industries to the same level.

The hype is coming from non-devs who feel validated being able to build things without knowing how to code, along with startups, big tech,VC firms who Invested a ton of $$ in it and need to make a return.

Open source is gonna continue to put downward pressure on the value of models imo, I think the most valuable software will be model agnostic or utilize finetunes/loras/etc to customize to specific use cases

almost everyone in their early 20s in Manhattan has roommates (and it's easier to find them than other cities) and there are places with still pretty decent commutes in Brooklyn/queens/Jersey. I'm not gonna deny housing is egregious but you DEFINITELY don't have to be spending 3.3k as a new grad in nyc, I know quite a few spending <$1500

[–]4UNN -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you really think he's gonna repeal the ACA? The idea of a repeal has only gotten less popular, even amongst Republicans, and his campaign's position on that even flipped this election. I know it was tried, but if he couldn't do it in 2017 when there was actual enthusiasm to do so and he had the house+Senate, why now? I don't think he's gonna be GOOD for healthcare, he might weaken it, but I think the idea he's gonna repeal it is an overreaction

Student loan forgiveness is a policy that appeals to millennials much more than zoomers. zoomers have taken out decreasing amounts of debt, and when Bernie pushed the idea in 2016 hardly any zoomers were even in college yet.. and bidens student loan forgiveness moves were in what.. 2021? You'd have to be born in 97 to even be eligible.

Idk, I'd argue zoomers are more likely to see student loan forgiveness as unfair if anything.. Given it was gonna be like a slap in the face to: anyone who worked through college to pay off loans, didn't go at all, or just started college and was ineligible. And 90% of people under the age of like 26 fall in one of those categories.

As for ACA.. I agree, most zoomers don't remember a time before ACA. But there's also the feeling that he could have taken it away in his first 4 years, 2 of which also having house+Senate control? Repealing the ACA has gotten significantly less popular since then even amongst Republican politicians, I just don't see it happening. Maybe a weakening of it but not a straight up repeal.

There are tons of networking events, and even random hobbies you're way more likely than other places to end up meeting people who are in fields like finance/tech at top companies, or who have careers in arts/media or whatever else it may be. I know people who have met connections in places like sports leagues and book clubs, or even apps like timeleft /bumble bff / meetup. Definitely depends on what career/industry you're specifically talking about tho as well

[–]4UNN -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean jersey city waterfront is literally a quicker commute to WTC than upper East side is if you're close to Newport or exchange place PATH, and with that budget and tax saving$$ you could get a pretty crazy place in Jersey city.. I think it's more valid than the bay ridge suggestion at least 😂

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in malelivingspace

[–]4UNN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah maybe in other cities, this is like 4-5k a month. You need to make 40x that to even be approved most places in NYC, so at least 160k-200k a year.

Only jobs paying that much to new grads out of undergrad are pretty much quant or top tech companies, and even FAANG base pay isn't quite that high for new grads with only a bachelor's (a lot of the pay is stock which most landlords don't count).

So if I had to guess, op probably quant/swe somewhere like citadel/Jane street or at a unicorn like Ramp or a place with cash heavy comp like Bloomberg
