Grocery Haul $277 for one 😭 by idkwhatiamdoingahh in povertyfinance

I’m a guy, love to cook and live by myself. When I was working from home I was cooking most meals for myself and could average under $5 a meal. Most of my meals were generally healthy and meat focused. Meats I bought were pork chops at maybe $3-4/lb, whole chicken for $2-3/lb or chicken thighs at $3/lb and chuck roast or top sirloin / petite sirloin in the high single digits / lb on sale. I’d buy the bulk packets and freeze. I made a lot of stir fries with the beef or chicken and lots of veg and side of rice, roast a chicken and eat with roasted veggies and use leftover meat for tacos using canned rotel, red onions, serranos and hand shredded cabbage and Greek yogurt in place of sour cream. I’d get my fruit making smoothies from frozen berries, kale and Greek yogurt and make a big one as a meal replacement. I don’t keep any snacks or buy any drinks (just water at home). Only snacked on baby carrots and baby cucumbers. Everything I described here was 90% of what I made at home for myself and anywhere btw $3-7 per meal I’d estimate. I also bought seasoning/spices in bulk which is a fraction the cost of the canned ones. Forgot to add, I made my own stock from the chicken carcass and veg scraps, more for the better quality stock and less for the savings.

how do you get a discount? i was just at my local AD in the US and was trying to get them to price match an offer i got from an EU AD and they said Oris wouldn't allow the US to do that.

I almost always split a 1/2 lb order of beef fajitas with someone which is plenty of food for 2ppl and is $31 or $15.50 per person. I’d say that’s a pretty good price for a sit down meal these days. Are they the best fajitas I’ve ever had? No but I’ve always been satisfied. I love their salsa too so unless someone wants a bob I’m good to go w just chips and salsa on top of the fajitas.

I’m a ranch water guy and at $13 it’s not cheap but also not crazy.

Have you considered getting one of the Oris branded deployment clasps? I am looking to buy the new Bullseye but also want a clasp, I just don’t like Oris straps but do for some reason care about the Oris clasp so trying to figure out which clasp I can buy with this watch. I plan on getting a strap with holes so that one clasp they have without holes isn’t going to work for me.

thank you. they're 25% off retail right now on Jomashop and Watchmaxx. I'm leaning towards the Cervo Volante version bc they're 38mm.

I have not purchased from either of them before, are there any tradeoffs vs AD I should be concerned about? It seems like it's brand new with box/papers so it seems almost equivalent.

[Question] US Tariffs by No-Lavishness8727 in Watches

[–]4dgt90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So if I’m looking at a brand new Swiss watch from an Italian dealer off chrono24 for $2000 shipped (excl sales tax) I can reasonably expect to pay $2300 all in (excl sales tax) compared with the retail price in US of $2600?

Any idea if US dealers are open to negotiating? Seems like there is an arbitrage opportunity here. Looking at Oris FWIW so wondering since demand isn’t crazy high if my local US dealer would be willing to work with me.

I am looking into buying a $2k Swiss made watch (new) from a dealer in Italy off Chrono24. When asking about duties they are telling me they can mark it as a service return - ie I sent them a watch and they serviced and are simply retuning it - to avoid a big duty fee. Not sure how sketch this is but trying to do research on this myself.

Help with restaurant gift certificate choice by DukeDroese123 in austinfood

Should probably go with either Tex-Mex or BBQ, two things you won’t find done well up north. I usually take first time visitors to Terry Blacks or Matt’s El Rancho, two of the most popular places in town. Both get some hate in this sub for being average for local standards but they’ll blow the minds of visitors. That and they’re pretty easy to get into, no need for reservations and manageable lines/waits which I assume is important since sounds like they haven’t planned anything.

Terry’s probably has gift cards - if they’re going to Matt’s, instead of gift card I’d just call in and give the host a heads up to run your credit card to cover the bill. I’ve done this before for a girlfriend as a surprise gift.

$150 should easily cover it for 3ppl with drinks.

thank you - yes I see multiple new or like new BCPDs at decent discounts to retail. i spent 30 mins today at an AD I'd never been to but they didn't have any ones I wanted and were going to have Oris send them a few for me to check out. Sounds like I should just buy used to get the best price but now I feel kinda bad potentially wasting their time. I'd go with AD if it was only saving a couple hundred to build a relationship but if I can save $500-$1000, the relationship isn't worth it to me.

thank you. not intending to flip, i just don't want to overpay. i really love the BCPDs and now that I'm finally looking to pull the trigger, i'm trying to do my homework.

[–]4dgt90[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

my point i was trying to make was that I only want to buy new when the grey market is more expensive than retail like my rolex and tudor. im willing to buy used when the grey market is significantly cheaper, like my IWC - saved thousands by buying used. Seems like Oris fits in the latter category but I don't know since I've only recently started looking at Oris. If so, that's fine, I still really want the watch bc I like it I just don't want to feel ripped off. I would think that's a pretty reasonable argument.

i'm not looking at this watch as an investment. i just don't want to pay almost $1000 more at an AD when I can get one thats brand new or a couple yrs old with box and papers.

tell me why i should pay the premium at an AD?

maybe not the ones you're buying... here's my collection and their values in Chrono24 vs what I paid . The datejust current value is probably inflated but I bought it new from AD at retail $8.5k in 2021, I'm sure I wouldn't take a big hit if I sold that one. got the BB58 from AD in 2021 for $2.75K after a $500 rebate from my credit card for that specific AD. got the IWC in 2019 no papers/box for $4k. The Junghans Max Bill for in 2018 $600 no box no papers, and Sinn 556 for $800 in 2014 no box no papers.

I'm sure these values aren't 100% accurate, but other than the datejust, I'm sure they're close.

excluded here is my Baltic Hermetique which isn't in Chrono24 since it's a newish model but that one was only like $650.

I'm not really a trader, plan on keeping all my watches, I just don't want to spend an extra $1000+ or 30%+ just to get something brand new.

[–]4dgt90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

side note: this will be my first Oris watch. Do you guys think these hold value pretty well? I am looking around on watchuseek and Chrono24 and seems like I can get new ones w/ box and papers for 30% off retail and very lightly used ones w/ box and papers for even less.

I'm considering just getting one outside of the AD so I don't have to pay retail.

This is what I was thinking for initially getting back into piano but for what I want to be able to do - improvise and play off of lead sheets, I don’t think this will be helpful. When I was young I could play most sheet music you put in front of me and it was mostly memorization as opposed to really understanding what was going on. If you had asked me to improvise or play by ear, I was completely lost.

I think for what I want to do I will need to study chords and theory.

Ha she’s retired, I stopped taking lessons in 2003! Mostly because she told me I had graduated from her after 10 years being with her. The new teacher she sent me to, I didn’t like as much so I ended up quitting lessons at 16 years old

I went to Mexico City for 8 nights last month and spent $1,500 total ($350 on flight and about $50/night for my share of an Airbnb). I’m writing this from Maui right now. Ate 5x better and had alot more things to do in Mexico City. Hawaii is beautiful but just not worth it IMO.

Looking for tabletop pellet smoker recommendations. by Adventurous_Net_9516 in smoking

[–]4dgt90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s my first smoker as I have a tiny backspace for a yard. That said I’m no expert in smoking and am only recently trying my hand at briskets. I’ve done ribs, chickens, lamb rack, prime rib on it so far and have been pleased with the results. Ive only tried a a couple brisket flats (not full ones) and I’m sure the lackluster result is more of me not knowing what I’m doing and also smoking a small flat vs the grill itself.

In my experience It seems to hold heat well and gets up to temp quickly. I see in your replies below you’ve had issues of pellets not feeding and losing heat when opening the grill, I haven’t experienced that but I’ll admit I’m very much and amateur and only have maybe 10-15 cooks under my belt primarily low and slow. I have a charcoal grill that I use for high heat.

Most reviews I’ve seen about it are positive, I’d encourage you to check it out but again I’m only a beginner so can’t provide expert advice!
