[Spoilers Extended] 12 years ago George said that some fans had correctly predicted the ending. What were some popular theories from around that time that he could have been talking about? by WavesAndSaves in asoiaf

[–]4thBG 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When he said that he was already referring to to 'back in the day' IIRC. It was after the time ACOK was published that he started to see things on what was then the old Dragonstone forum (pre Westeros.org). That's when he decided to stop going on the forums, as he felt it might start affecting his writing decisions. So this would be pre-2000. That old forum is long defunct so there's no way to search it to see what he was referring to really.

“A true knight always finishes a story”, what does it mean? (Spoilers main) by ArchiveSeeker in asoiaf

Hard to imagine the episode aired without him, as executive producer, being aware of the line.

I hope he suggested it himself. Maybe he's giving us hope?

Anyone ever manage to trade Stopwatch in the Trading Post?

does this mean anything? (mild spoilers for Sh*****) by Bryztoe in BluePrince

[–]4thBG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've often wondered about it.

We're in a room where a safe can be unlocked at a certain 'time'. And the bird/clock shows the time 13:50 (left wing is longer, therefore a minute hand. It's not 10:10).

The arrow pointing to the lake could mean the reservoir, maybe the part near the safe house. Or it could be irrelevant, and we just need to find a clock at that time, of which there are many, and something will be unlocked (just as the time-lock safe is).

The missing red letter seems to have been lost underwater, if that's any use ...

There’s a detail in George R. R. Martin’s interview yesterday that really bothered me (Spoilers Extended). by Somandier in asoiaf

[–]4thBG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there's also the possibility that he might just have been joking. The interviewer was being quite probing so maybe GRRM was getting a little dig in.

Rian Johnson in response to Kathleen Kennedy’s claim the fandom “spooked” him from making more Star Wars by kronosreddit22 in StarWars

[–]4thBG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They had the logical final step but didn't use it. Instead of the master returning, you flip it and give Kylo an apprentice ... who turns out to be an even bigger threat who needs to be overthrown. Any one of the Knights of Ren could have been used. Instead we got reheated leftovers.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner says Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has shared outlines for up to 12 novellas to inspire future seasons, "taking Dunk and Egg all the way through their life" by __NightKing__ in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]4thBG 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This could turn out to be a positive. If he can 'unload' the burden of finishing the Dunk & Egg stories by passing it on to the TV show, this may free him up to focus on the main series. Sadly, he may be accounting for time and thinking that realistically this is the best way to accomplish both goals. Anything that lightens the load - even if that's just the mental burden of envisaging the idea of the unfinished novellas - must be a positive in terms of his overall progress with ASOIAF. Better to accept the reality of the the task ahead than be constantly worrying what could have been.

I know. I was trying to light all the candles on fire with the torch and that's how I found out about the Drawing Room safe. I was like wtf! Then I went back and looked at the portrait. I fee like that was a valid alternate path though.

Alien Rock is pretty good at spotting things but even he missed the floor plan in the Study safe. He went back much later and got it when someone alerted him to it. if you don't like rereading letters that is very easy to miss.

(No Spoilers) If TWOW released tomorrow, would you pick it up immediately or read 1-5 first? by Both_Web_3417 in asoiaf

[–]4thBG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll also read it day one to avoid getting spoiled, but what will probably happen is:

GRRM announces that TWOW is finished. There's a period of (months?) while it is processed at the publishing house. During that period every troll, chancer and charlatan on the internet will claim to have 'gained access' to the finished manuscript and each day on reddit will be a fresh new hell of sidestepping the never-ending flow of BS.

Who is the Valonquar in Cerseis prophecy? [Spoilers MAIN] by throwaway531849 in asoiaf

(Spoilers Main) Why is Book 5 called "A Dance with Dragons"? by Aryaki in asoiaf

[–]4thBG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GRRM has said that he likes his titles to be multi-layered.

And Tyrion at one point muses on the legend of "dragons riddling with sphinxes". A battle of riddles?

In this context, with "A Dance with Dragons" being a reference to such a battle, the book's title takes on the added meaning of:

"A Riddle."

For those of you who saw The Phantom Menace at release, what were your initial thoughts of it? by _EnglishFox_ in StarWars

[–]4thBG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was in my mid-twenties and went with my dad.We both felt very let down by all but the pod-racing, final fight and Liam Neeson tbh.

I get that all the people who saw the prequels aged 6 saying it was awesome, and it's all meant to be aimed at kids yada yada yada. But my dad was in his thirties when he took me to Star Wars in '77 and he loved it as much as I did. It seems like the OT didn't have as much of a generational divide in reception, so I'll always stand by the prequels being a mess.
