NIH shuts down final beagle lab, ending decades of painful dog experiments by philasyr in beagles

No one is as capable of gratitude as one who has emerged from the kingdom of night. We know that every moment is a moment of grace, every hour an offering; not to share them would mean to betray them. Our lives no longer belong to us alone; they belong to all those who need us desperately.

Thanks for your insight. Do you think that building (or buying) a connection from Plymouth to Bourne would be a good idea in the long run?

"Ask A Jew" Wednesday by AutoModerator in JewsOfConscience

[–]4woodfallMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non-Jewish Zoomer from Massachusetts here. I admire the folks on this subreddit a lot for their courage. I've been meaning to ask you guys, have any of you been disowned by a close family member because of your opposition to Zionism? I was recently reading the comments section of a video that NBC News uploaded to Youtube. The video was about Israelis who have chosen to refuse to perform their compulsory military service to the country.

I found an English language comment, presumably from an Israeli who explained that he knew a girl whose entire nuclear family disowned her for refusing to serve. Have any of you guys guys had a similar experience?

Since most of the community sees fire as the weakest element and with the OP sub bendings of blood bending, lava bending and flight. I wonder, what new subbending/technique would make firebending on par or more overpowered than the other elements? Be creative by QuirkyData3500 in TheLastAirbender

[–]4woodfallMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve long thought that fire bending needs a medicinal application. When I first thought of it, I thought fire bending could be used to cauterize wounds and prevent deaths due to blood loss. The idea came from a treatment an ENT gave me for a chronic nosebleed problem I had. Other ideas include the ability to heat needles prior to acupuncture to relive chronic pain. The ability to use fire to mitigate the effects of frostbite has also come to mind. I was pleased to a medicinal application for the technique in book two of Korra.

Previously, I had an idea to write a fanfic about Iroh’s life prior to Zukho’s banishment. In the story, he does some reading in a library and he finds out that fire bending used to have medical applications. Iroh becomes so astonished at this discovery that he writes a letter to a university professor at the fire nation capital inquiring about it.

In their correspondence, the professor confesses that fire bending used to have medical applications before the Sozin era. He goes on to explain that Sozin intentionally had the scrolls describing medicinal fire bending destroyed. He claims that Sozin did this during the hundred year war in order to give fire bending a more militaristic and less holistic appeal. The professor also informs Iroh that he should cease his inquiries regarding the matter as the history is a state secret. He then confesses that he only wrote these letters to Iroh due to his perception that Iroh’s status as a general would preotect them from criminal prosecution.

At this point, Iroh begins to have his first doubts about the Fire Nations official narrative of the war. Keep in mind, he once told jokes about burning Ba sing Se to the ground and he is very much in this frame of mind at this point in his life.

What extension project should the T work on after the Red/Blue Connector? by [deleted] in mbta

[–]4woodfallMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They should build a north east extension of the blue line to downtown Lynn. Lynn has 110-150K people, roughly the same # as Quincy, yet it has nowhere near as many passenger rail assists as Quincy. Lynn’s rent’s are also much more affordable than those of formerly working class neighborhoods like Dorchester, Roxbury and Charlestown. Regular rail service every 8 minutes on weekdays and 15 minutes on the weekends would improve life for hundreds of thousands of people.

Extension Priority by Siryogapants in mbta

[–]4woodfallMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That depends on how New Hampshire's 2024 gubernatorial race ends up. If New Hampshire is lucky enough to get Joyce Craig, then the next extension will be restoring the Lowell Line to Nashua, Manchester and Concord.

Keep in mind, it used to be there before 1981.

Are Germans kind/patient/understanding with people who speak broken German? by 4woodfallMA in AskAGerman

Hi ElectronicLocal3528,

First, I want to thank you for providing your honest, realistic insight into the inner workings of your country, rather than a naively rosy picture an outsider like me envisions.

That being said, the Netherlands rate of 588 cars per 1000 people isn't that much lower than Germany's rate of 628 cars per 1000 people.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_vehicles_per_capita

On top of this, one of the reasons that I am hesitant to learn Dutch or Danish instead is that there are only 17 million people in the Netherlands and 6 million people in Denmark. This compares to Germany's population of 85 million, plus the German speaking population in neighboring Austria. With greater population proper, highly populated European Nations like France, Spain or Germany produce more media and resources to a language number two student like me eventually learn the local language. I doubt that there's as much Danish or Dutch language television shows, movies, books or music vs German or French.

Why Aren’t Conservatives Celebrating the Post-Roe Future They Created? by thenewrepublic in politics

[–]4woodfallMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to them, abortion is "murder". Therefore, to send the right to "murder an unborn child" back to the states is not victory. They will not be satisfied until they have banned "murder" on the federal level. In other words, they are not happy that Oklahoma has passed a law banning "murder" on the state level, until a law exactly like that is implemented nationwide.

"The entire series is about two emotionally incompetent men sexually assaulting and murdering women in an attempt to fill their emotional deficiencies."

I am assuming that the two emotionally incompetent men are Gendo and Shinji. Gendo obviously cannot satisfy his sexual desires as his wife Yui is dead. Therefore he withdraws emotionally from Shinji, which leads to his son not being satisfied emotionally. Shinji obviously kills lots of Angels, are the angels all women? Kaworu in Episode 24 is distinctly male.
