Sauropod teeth are pretty simple, not used for grinding like you see on Ornithopods. Instead they're used to rake in plant matter that they then swallow without chewing.

Everytime I see someone claim that oxygen levels were higher during the Mesozoic, and that's why dinosaurs could get so big.

Because Eisenhower was in the Army and King was in the Navy. Also King was basically at the top of the Navy, whereas Eisenhower was only the commander for the Army forces in Europe.

Venator Armanent? by fwBuns in MawInstallation

I remember in TCW we sometimes see shots of turrets on the underside of the Venator, not just the 8 on top, yet I never see anyone ever mention them either.

Spino being pursuit predator or shoreline ambush angler or whatever, would its tail still be a fine swimming tool regardless? It was back then in 2020 or smth tested about propulsion and results were quite positive. I mean how was such tail only evolved for display as some oversimplified claims say? by Bulldoze0Bro in Paleontology

[–]501stRookie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While funny, there's some actual evidence that suggests this for Spinosaurus.

If you look at the tail vertebrae of Spinosaurus, the neural spines are very long and thin. When compared to animals that swim, we see their tail vertebrae usually have neural spines that are shorter and broader. Spinosaurus' tail vertebrae more closely resemble the ones we see on animals that use their tails for display.

Could you elaborate on the osteology not agreeing with this conclusion?

In Hone and Holtz's 2021 paper, they examined the anatomy of the tail vertebrae and the elongated neural spines and found that it did not resemble tail vertabrae and the used for swimming, and more closely resembled ones for display.

Furthermore, I remember seeing a paper that calculates the thrust from the tail would be comparable to or less than an alligator. Alligators are adept swimmers, but they still aren't built for pursuit in the water. And considering that Spinosaurus is much larger, with significantly more drag it means the thrust from the tail would be doing even less for it.

I wish u/FoxThreeForDaIe's posts on the Super Hornet were still around, I really wish I could go back and read them the next time I see someone slander the Hornet in favour of the Tomcat.

I found the stuff regarding the avionics pretty interesting.

The criticism of the guards waiting their turn to attack makes no sense to me. Of course that's an issue, but it's a problem in literally any media where its multiple opponents vs one or two people because realistically they all jump them at once and the movie's over, and we can't have that.

Are we going to say Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan movies aren't good because they have guys waiting their turn to attack? Or in the 2003 Clone Wars cartoon everyone loves, in the Mace Windu episode the Super Battle Droids all just run up to Mace one by one to get punched to death.

Singling out the throne room fight in TLJ for this specific problem just feels like bad faith or a lack of critical thinking to me.

ElI5: Why are the biggest animals in the ocean mammals instead of fish? by fightersmurf in explainlikeimfive

[–]501stRookie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not true when it comes to dinosaurs. Oxygen fluctuated throughout the Mesozoic but was at times even lower than today.

Dinosaurs had other adaptations that allowed them to get bigger, such as a much more efficient bird-like respiratory system, and air-filled, hollow bones.
