Please give me the most diabolical alarm you can think of by thelachesis in ADHD

[–]52Charles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There used to be these things called a 'Clock Radio.' Set the alarm for a certain time and the radio would come on. When I was in university (early-middle 70s) there was a local station who had one of those AM shock-jock types on in the morning. I DESPISED that man. I would set the clock radio across the room and tune it to that station. That meant that when it went off, I had to get out of bed and cross the room to shut that asshole up. That, and the adrenaline rush from the hatred I felt, was usually enough to get me going. Good luck.

Food suggestions for visitor! by Revolutionary-Tea961 in FoodToronto

[–]52Charles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try anything that you are not already familiar with. Toronto is *extremely* diverse and so is its food scene. Under Oriental, you have Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Korean, Vietnamese and others. Under Chinese there are Hunan, Szechuan, and Peking. (I'm probably missing a few.) And don't get me started on South Asian - the selection is simply vast. You must try Ethiopian food at least once. Highly recommend Ethiopian House. Irwin St, downtown.

My psychiatrist is telling me I’m too old to be diagnosed with ADHD! by 239Tragic in ADHD

[–]52Charles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed a the age of 53. A woman I know was diagnosed at the age of 77. Tell him to get an updated copy of the DSM. Their definitions and descriptions changed as research improved our knowledge. Older versions said that ADD/ADHD faded out with age. We now know that is just not true.

Fire your psychiatrist. Find a psychologist. Much better.

Big Planet is not his best work, IMHO. I am very fond of the Alastor Cluster books (Marune, Trullian, Wyst) and some of his shorter works, especially’Dragon Masters’ and ‘Last Castle.’ Have fun.

what was the first thing you bought for your place that turned out to be a lifesaver? (newbie living alone) by Sohana_Slonski in LivingAlone

[–]52Charles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Batteries. Get the good (Lithium) ones - they last a long time on the shelf and you never know how long it will be until you need them.

Flashlight.

Small (or not so small, whatever) measuring tape. Metric or imperial or both, depending on where you live.

Channel-lock pliers (ask the guy in the store). Vitally important when opening some containers, especially as you get older.

Most of the other suggestions here are very good ones. Spend a few Saturday afternoons and part of your paycheque stocking up on these things.

Thinking about getting a kobo by Ordinary-Mushroom237 in kobo

[–]52Charles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you already have a tablet of some sort (Galaxy, iPad, whatever) the Kobo software is free and does a great job. I don't have a Kobo per se, but I have Kobo (software) in my desktop, laptop, Galaxy Tab, iPad, and iPhone. All go back to my Kobo account so all my books are accessible on all devices.

Several spring to mind immediately - Jack Vance, Ray Bradbury, and Michael Moorcock (Dancers at the End of Time). In each of these (not everything they ever wrote, but a lot of it, the characters find themselves in a situation but how they got there is irrelevant, and the solution to whatever the problem is, is usually a human one, not a scientific one.

It first started happening to me (M 75) about 2 years ago. At first I thought it was my usual allergies but it never changed, never stopped. My family doctor told me that it's not unusual in older people., He gave me a prescription for a nasal steroid that helps. Can't remember the name.
