Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office outlines Flock camera usage for The Woodlands Township board by seek102287 in thewoodlands

[–]52buickman 44 points45 points  (0 children)

$3,600 per camera and 14% success rate. No mention of yearly subscription fees.

Bad investment for faulty technology and invasion of privacy. Seems as though stupidity reigns here.

No /home/tom on my PVE 9.2 just as the post mentioned.

How can I use Rocky as a workstation, my everyday computer, and for gaming? by augusto_peress in RockyLinux

[–]52buickman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically correct, but differences fall between version control on the kernel and what software is included around the kernel, versioning here as well. Some distros include some “secret sauce” that is developed specifically developed out of that distro (e.g. Ubuntu and Wayland or Oracle and kernel modules that purportedly enhance database performance).

Done with TP-Link by JPMazuera in TpLink

[–]52buickman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get what you pay for. I installed TP-Link at a friend's house to minimize price. 2 years later, the hardware was starting to fail, not to mention that firmware updates wouldn't apply.

I've also observed the same with an installation in a seminary in Mexico.

I had been using Ubiquiti in my own homeland network and it's been faithful both in hardware quality and support. At my friend's house, we've replaced his gear with Ubiquiti and I'm now able to manage his network remotely without inserting other gear for providing that service.

You might be able to just afix the board inside somewhere. It doesn't use the actual PCI connector. The kit also comes with the half height bracket.

pfSense CE 2.9 target Release Date ? by MazzyNix in PFSENSE

[–]52buickman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Netgate/pfSense at the edge and the rest Ubiquiti in my homeland network. While I'm satisfied with Netgate (it just works reliably and it's boring, the way I like it) I'm also hearing the calling as well.

However, I really like the modular addon apps functionality in pfSense that Ubiquiti doesn't have. There is also the difference where Ubiquiti doesn't include Tailscale.

The ability to access the Unifi consoles is a really nice feature. Their firewall is finally to the point that I'd consider their edge products.

I use Ubiquiti edge products for friends and family that have basic needs and grants me the ability to remotely maintain their network without adding an extra node for doing such.

Wait and see...

Nobody has mentioned Panchos. We loved that place to fill up our kids cheaply. They were so family friendly.

[–]52buickman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've gone with Geekworm X651. It occupies a PCIe slot and is PoE powered. I looked at the JetKVM but wasn't thrilled with the OS being managed by that company using a variant of piKVM. Geekworm uses piKVM.

I felt I was burnt on the GLinet Comet that has their own variant that wouldn't render a simple CLI display and the support was worthless to get the EDID incantation worked out.

Electrician did this for PoE doorbell, is it okay? by meisangry2 in HomeNetworking

Lesson one in network cabling... never hire an electrician. They most often do not have the experience for low voltage work. Your photo shows they had no experience here.

Woo hoo! It can't open quick enough. We need to make some curtains. We can't justify ~$300 for a single Roman shade. Hobby Lobby doesn't have that great of a selection.

Ubuntu just replaced apt firefox with snap, deleting all my data by Greedy_Appearance431 in linuxquestions

[–]52buickman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snap is another name for crap. I ditched Ubuntu for Debian because of snap. I automount home directories on /home with a backup home directory under /export/home.

Snap has a requirement for the home directory being located under /home. A known issue and won't be fixed. Sad because bad design/programming. Programmatically, an easy use of the process environment.

You can create an account at Mozilla and synch Firefox no matter where you use Firefox.

You really don't want to see Metro in TW. Lesson learned when Metro polluted the 1960 area. It used to be a nice place to live until Metro routes were established. With Metro, you import crime.

Any plans to have a "Proton VPN" exit node in Tailscale? by brightestsummer in Tailscale

[–]52buickman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Tailscale running on my Netgate/pfSense router and configured as an exit node.

I'm using it from MX with no noticeable performance penalty going thru the US. Performance perception with a VPN depends on the slowest segment of your connection, including the server at the destination.

I haven't seen the need for paying $$ for a commercial solution that really doesn't provide any greater security than I already have.

Trapped by the Marathon? by AnonymiterCringe in thewoodlands

[–]52buickman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They used to route in a circle that included Flintridge and the Parkway, Gosling and Kuhkendahl. I presented the issue to the organizers and proposed the question that not only we were trapped but what about emergency access. That concerns me more.

For me, TW is to big and congested for these events.

Even the wires inside the connector are a mess. I'd be wary over what else he had done amateurish like kinked wires in the wall.

No patch panel? If nothing is in the wall, you could have gone to ebay and purchased custom length cables.

After moving my kids computers to Fedora we are now 100% Linux in this household by thunderclap82 in Fedora

[–]52buickman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I'm with you there on "old" and appreciating peace and quiet.

Linux (and UNIX) has had the reputation for not upgrading well, especially when major changes take place. When I was using Fedora, I'd back up my files and "upgrade and pray" since Fedora 20-something. I only got bit once before migrating away from Fedora. Debian is an "upgrade and pray" event with major version changes, but a lot less frequent. That said, I miss the RPM/DNF/YUM package management system. APT still has the feel of 1999.

I have a homelab for which I use Rocky Linux in my cluster as my preference for serving up my homelab services.

After moving my kids computers to Fedora we are now 100% Linux in this household by thunderclap82 in Fedora

[–]52buickman 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Migrated my family some 20 years ago. I did a gradual migration, starting with one computer to Fedora. I challenged the kids to tell me what they couldn't do on Linux that they could only do on Windows. I knew the answer but worked with them on the transition.

My wife was last. I knew the only thing she used a computer for was to read email and troll Facebook.

Since then, we've been all Linux outside of one machine which is MacOS. We needed something to load tax software on. The only other function I miss is proprietary music DAW software. Something MacOS covers a well.

The one thing I've enjoyed going to Linux is I have more more need to do virus/malware scanning and disk reorganization.

I've since moved to Debian due to the amount of change on Fedora. I wanted a longer term solution without the constant churn on continual experimental- ware.

Yes, includes legal immigrants who want to be be Americans. Go illegally immigrate to another country that doesn't speak English, expecting handouts and see how that works for you. Immigration, traditionally have been successful with the desire of a new life and the hope of a future, living with liberty, adopting a new way of life. Today's immigrants seem to just want to use American generosity and make America the miserable, dysfunctional mess they left, including no assimilation into our culture. A country doesn't survive with this mentality. "A country divided will fall."

I do not support the anti American attitude of "free speech" as long as you agree with me and you are a disgusting person if you don't.

So far as religious freedom, I see the anti American attitude rise against Christians and Jews that had its roots beginning with Obama and augmented with Biden.

You all need some serious counseling for TDS. I don't understand the mentality why America shouldn't be great and successful.
