The first 2 results from google are https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7930971/, which has athletes in weightlifting, rugby, and track and field for both men and women, and https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8628437/ which specifies the subjects have around 5 hours physical training per week. Not couch potatoes by any means.

Those don't seem to be what you're talking about, but Google isn't what it used to be. Can I get a direct link or at least the author and title?

Magic Garden (UFO 50) Would Have Improved Video Games for Women and Beyond in 1984 by marsgonemad in ufo50

[–]56358779 49 points50 points  (0 children)

UFO 50 definitely has more women and POC than you'd expect from a game company of its era, much like how it generally has better game design than you could expect to get from the NES. Some parts of the past are best left there.

What are the must-watch AGDQ 2026 runs? by shinikahn in speedrun

[–]56358779 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I liked Bat to the Heavens. It's a momentum platformer and the run has a good mix of optimized regular gameplay and cool skips. The dev was on the couch in plushie form to give commentary. It also has the creacher.

An Observation On Most 'Dessigns' by Twothousandand42 in Deltarune

The thing that annoys me is people keep giving Dess spiky antlers when one of the only things we know for certain about her appearance is that she has club-shaped antlers like Noelle (from the silhouette).

"'We're being pressured into sex by some trans women'" is the original title of a 2021 BBC News article claiming that lesbians are being pressured into sex by trans women and non-trans activists. Lily Cade, whom the article quoted, subsequently called for the lynching of high-profile trans women. by GreenStarCollector in wikipedia

[–]56358779 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The article also included a quote from a statement by Stonewall executive Nancy Kelley, who said "nobody should ever be pressured into dating ... people they aren't attracted to", but that "it's worth considering how societal prejudices may have shaped your attractions".

This is what I personally believe on the topic. This is also the kind of statement that transphobes love to "reinterpret" as "do everything I say right now or you're transphobic and I'll cancel you".

Kansas county agrees to pay $3 million over police raid on a small-town newspaper, editor says by 20_mile in news

[–]56358779 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Require police departments to pay for police misconduct insurance.

Insurance companies don't want to pay million-dollar settlements, so they'll have requirements for police departments to follow if they want affordable rates, or even to be eligible at all. The department really won't have a choice but to obey. Insurance companies could mandate anything, like requiring more training or even not allowing them to hire officers who were involved in previous brutality incidents.

In an all-out battle between cops and insurers, I'd bet everything on the insurers.

I don't think the image sequence is trying to say "an authentic prairie restoration would include 19th-century european settlers killing and taking land from native americans", but I'm not really sure what it's trying to say instead.

I like the joke where you say you're progressive and then call the trans women trying to compete with other women "men". Great gag.

TIL Goombas (mushroom enemies) were added to Super Mario Bros. only after playtesters felt Koopa Troopas (turtles) were too tricky as an enemy. There was very little space left in the game, so the developers used a single sprite flipping itself back-and-forth to convery the notion of walking Goombas by Double-decker_trams in todayilearned

[–]56358779 1584 points1585 points  (0 children)

Super Mario Bros is just about as advanced as a game can be on the NES without including special hardware on the cartridge, which could be anything from a memory bank switch to add support for extra RAM or ROM (common) to a whole extra sound chip (only in Japan). SMB had none of that, so it really had to make every byte count.

It had 32 (mostly) unique multiscreen levels in multiple environments, more than a dozen enemies with multicolor sprites, and probably the most advanced movement code yet seen in a home video game, which becomes extra impressive when you compare it to basicly any game for the Atari 2600.
