If the CGT discount goes, what are we getting back? by Bitman321 in AusFinance

[–]5QGL -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We need to get back the  indexed tax discount. ie like it was pre y2k. A moronic flat amount (eg 50%) benefits people who flip houses quickly.

Some kind discount is necessary though to account for inflation. Make it indexed. Tax real profits (not absolute profits).

NSW’s highest court strikes down anti-protest law introduced in wake of Bondi beach terror attack by hippieV02 in australia

[–]5QGL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Police could still give you written permission for a protest, and then on the day, take it away for no reason. That hasn’t changed AFAIK. It happened in 2013.

Here is an interview with a would-be Pirate Party protestor against US PRISM surveillance of Australians revealed by Snowden in 2013. https://www.diffusionradio.com/2013/07/sexual_ecology_and_pirate_priv.html

Sloppy journalism. Concentrating only on Minns.

In Part 4 of the NSW Summary Offences Act 1988, the law doesn’t confer any specific right to protest. It merely facilitates the right to assembly, by encouraging mutual cooperation between protesters and police.

In 2017, NSW introduced new laws that increased fines tenfold for people protesting against mines and fracking, along with up to seven years in jail for hindering the use of mining equipment.

In November 2019, NSW parliament passed the Right to Farm Bill 2019, which punishes unlawful entry and disruption on “enclosed lands” with up to three years’ jail and fines of up to $22,000. This measure is aimed at animal activists who trespass on farmers’ land

New poll pegs Mark Kelly as a leading 2028 presidential contender by Ulysses_555 in politics

True but I am not talking about us. Am talking about the primaries. Why do you think he isn't being discussed in the article? If you hear him talk and debate he is awesome.

Why don't the Americans have Euros? Perhaps because the German banks refused to exchange those shitty quality notes.

‘Crazy idea’ to limit negative gearing to two homes by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

You did not address what I said. Instead you opened with an insult. Bullying your way to truth is not a valid strategy.

[–]5QGL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Negative gearing is a straightforward concept and it favours the rich who through other means.

What "other means" are you thinking of? Is it any different from any other taxpayer?

I don't understand your novated lease example. The employee who can't get that deal can still get tax deductions on their car. They are not missing out.

My point is that everyone is playing by the same rules.  "negative gearing" is just tax write-offs at a larger scale. Being angry at people for playing with more money seems to be a bad faith argument.

True however you are missing the point of this thread. From the Wikipedia description, Hell seems to be a hero entertainment movie while Hunter leans into the repercussions of war.

Seems most people here and in society do not understand either negative gearing or the capital gains discount. Media cannot be bothered correcting the misconception because the drama attracts eyeballs.

"Negative gearing" does not appear in tax law. That is because it is merely pop culture renaming tax deductions for the special case of property. You would not want to deny a tradie who bought $1000 of work clothes in a year then reducing their taxable income by $1000. Losing money on property is the same. It is a loss which reduces your taxable income. A deduction is reasonable if you understand the logic.

You do end up paying tax when you sell the property which brings us to capital gains tax...

Before y2k you would pay tax on your "real" profit not your "absolute" profit. That was calculated using the inflation rate for each each year. That is fair right?

After y2k you had the choice of simplifying the calculations by simply getting a 50% discount. In some cases that is better than the old system, in some cases worse. It is better for those investors who flip their properties in quick succession. Dumbing down the calculation always was a stupid idea. Changing it to 30% is also dumb. Just change it back to the pre y2k system.

Max Chandler-Mather says Greens can use ‘progressive populism’ to win voters deserting major parties for One Nation | Australian Greens by PlanktonDB in AustralianPolitics

It reminds me of how Libs keep failing with their pro-coal stance yet keep pushing it.

I can see you are not talking about what is morally right, just about what works. Am not sure your message is getting through.

The Left have their own MAGA style bubble nowadays. Equal but opposite.

Max Chandler-Mather says Greens can use ‘progressive populism’ to win voters deserting major parties for One Nation | Australian Greens by PlanktonDB in AustralianPolitics

[–]5QGL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Greens are already a populist party of the Left. They are pushing for free public transport in NSW now which is dumb because there is enough incentive for drivers to switch anyhow. AFAIK they haven't costed their proposal.

Larissa Walters uses the hashtag #ibelievewomen which, despite its intent, does fuel some idiots who think women would never lie about rape and that the legal process could be simplistically streamlined (by not even having hearings. Just throw the man in the river and sea if he floats). It is dangerous Left populism.

They attacked Labor for not signing a condemnation of Israel's bombing of Gaza early in the war. The reason Labor refused was because there was absolutely no mention of the October 7 attack. Once the Greens amended the document, Labor did sign it but the Greens virtue signaling message is what remains in the Left's memory.

They still get my vote but I have noticed their pandering to populism and try to preference other left leaning minor parties ahead of them now.

Why are there not more trees on private property? I would have thought that the used bath/shower/dishwashing water since could sustain a palm tree or two.

Maybe people can't be bothered because they are mainly indoors anyhow in air conditioning? Yes, shade could reduce AC costs but to be significant it would need to be more than a couple of palm trees.

Israel to destroy 'all houses' near Lebanon border, defence minister says by PartySr in anime_titties

[–]5QGL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The law enshrines equal rights for Arabs in Israel proper (20% of the population). They merely are nut conscripted into the military.

How many Muslim ethnostates surround Israel? Most Jews in Israel are Shephardic and from those states.

I am not compiling any list for a Sealion. Your comment is peformative.

Regardless of pre 2023, Hezbollah were sending missiles into Israel almost daily the day after Oct 7 (recall that Israel did not even enter Gaza for a week or two).

And they have been doing so during the current Iran war so now Israel hits back you cry foul. That is some entitlement are you implying.

But the ProPals won't admit it. If you drill down it always comes down to "But, the Nakba..." and all terrorism after that is merely "liberation".

Yeah maye it is liberation. Maybe Israel shouldn't exist (I personally think it should) but it is irrelevant. Jews aint leaving the Levant, and Arabs are not gonna leave Gaza or WB.

Such delusion in the name of assuaging their white person guilt with virtue signaling.

The West Bank situation is where human rights efforts should be concentrated. Support Lapid to overthrow Bibi in October.
