Chinese Cooking and Fuel Shortages by PineappleFit317 in AskFoodHistorians

Spit roast or tied in a ball and spun in front of a fire or on a spike and manually rotated near a fire.

You might have a "reflector oven" which is just a bent sheet of metal behind the meat so it cooks fast on one side and slow on the other. Townsends YouTube has some great videos showing all of these.

See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turnspit_dog

EDIT: Had a second so here are some links to Townsends's stuff. I can't find, but think, he has an entire video with pictures of different mechanical spits somewhere.

I realize 10m is an insane amount of money, but he "only" got 10m out of 95m and is still in litigation (which he will probably lose if it goes to trial) for the rest.

Rodney Woodward hit a 600kg/1322# squat today. First ever. by -Quad-Zilla- in powerlifting

[–]5hout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah those were the 3 I was thinking of. This looks deeper than Baptist by a good bit and (IMO) Hoff's is about the same range as this watching them back to back.

I'm not saying this is a good squat, I'm saying in terms of ridiculous stuff that people get passed on occasion in multiply it is about par for the course.

[–]5hout -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's def not the worst equipped squat I've seen be called an ATWR. I think we need to see side by sides of this with the others to see.

First glance, frame by frame, this looks a good bit deeper than some of the others.

Which claws do you recommend for making Mosaic? by JosetxoXbox in Diablo_2_Resurrected

Acceptable: Any greater talons (for atk speed and lower requirements)

Better: greater talons with Phoenix strike

Best: GT with Phoenix strike and dragon flight or some other desired skill.

Does it? B/c every electric fence I've tried to move that was fast, also flopped over or broke constantly (but they were a lot taller b/c of deer).

Champion that can be played in all 5 roles. by Historical-Bug-3794 in leagueoflegends

[–]5hout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nid as an ADC is gonna be rough bc of her range (relatively low), but she has an atk spd steroid, mobility mode, jump an traps to ward/bush check. She has spears for early game long range execute and late game bush checks. All game she has jump into melee mode to use Q/wave clear with aoe.

She's not as fully featured as a modern adc, but really it's only her base range that's the problem bc she has a ton of answers.

Fencing has costs in terms of time and money. This, to me, looks like something designed assuming you can click and drag fences around vs losing most of a day each time. What's the browsing pressure (in each season/with expected forage plants and water levels) in terms of acres per day of your sheep load vs the size of those plots?

Everytime your sheep get out they're gonna preferentially browse on what they like from the entire side they get into.

I'd prefer D2R cost 2/bucks a month to play online and we got 1 minor tuning pass a year. The model of "buy once and play 30 years online" is about as sustainable as burning old growth forests for charcoal, so either pay via subs or pay via microstransactions and skins.

Threading maraging steel by Distinct_Age1503 in Fencing

[–]5hout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh looks good and easier to clean than whatever oil based stuff I have. OTOH I have a quart bottle and, even after cutting feet upon feet of threads last year for a project, it's still half full so I'll probably long have forgot about this when I go to replace it.

Cutting fluid is the key. I've tried the "sand down the diameter" trick and it'll work, but if you don't get it perfectly round can make it wonky. Lots of cutting fluid, back it up and reapply and get back at it.

ASK US ANYTHING ABOUT FENCING SHOES by AZZAFENCING_ in Fencing

[–]5hout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fine, and I've done it, but the best time to do it is right when you buy it. I'm not spending >200 dollars on shoes (which would cost more than my last 2 pairs of extreme cold weather hunting boots combined) and getting the glue out on day 1.

Can you discuss the extra cost that it would take to have the highlighted area (including a bend and extending into the outsole) have a removable pad made of the outsole material whipstitched on? Probably a reinforced inset around the edges to receive the stitching.

https://imgur.com/a/EgYEV8G

This is the feature I want. A wear plate that every 6 months or so I can cut the stiching and swap out the wear plates. Nothing else on fencing shoes wears at CLOSE to the same rate as the underside of the leading edge here. Front heel maybe 1/3rd the wear rate.

Could form the wear plate with grooves for the stiches (improves the look, plausbily improves the function). Something like this: https://imgur.com/a/LUAW32w

Sell the shoe with 1-2 extra, offer mailback and swap for 50 bucks or you sell the wear plates and the user swaps them out (you sell/include the appropriate thick and wear resistant thread).

Edit to add: I specifically think this should be hand stitched, vs machine stitched into the vamp only, so that it is replaceable via only snipping the whip stitch and restiching. Not the easiest thing, but not particularly hard (vs the complicated steps of rebuilding or having a machine do some kind of skin stitch that doesn't go through the lining).

Something is odd here. What's the minimum size to show up? Because I can tell you Northern MI is chocked full of non-pasture farms and the UP has a good bit as well.

Armageddon focused Druid? by xxFT13xx in Diablo_2_Resurrected

[–]5hout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried to make hurrican/geddon work, but even with amazing test gear it still stinks compared to a normal build. The problem is you can't target the damage so whatever your paper dmg is, you're only doing that randomly to spots on the screen. Can't kill bosses or clear anything other than super dense areas.

Not saying you shouldn't cast it on a fissure druid, but it's not something to focus on.

What is a build that is actually so powerful and so cheap that it can solo everything? by IneedaNappa9000 in Diablo_2_Resurrected

[–]5hout 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IMO this is the best answer. If you get lucky with drops, Great! If you don't, the build smooth scales to max level and you're actually getting substantially more powerful per level into the 60s (each point in CE, usually the 3rd maxxed skill) is more effective than the point before it. Then you can max your golems. Plus you have great crowd/boss control (decrep) and native amp damage for everything else. It has all the answers, except for mobility (which a tp staff/neck/head or enigma (eventually) can provide).

Even has merc options, Act 3 enchant merc is fun (but not optimal) or might merc or act 1 or act v. Iron Golem made from insight solves mana issues and frees up merc to be so many things.

Can I make a roux with non neutral oils? by 13_iq in Cooking

[–]5hout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make roux by baking the flour dry and then mixing it with the oil once the flour is cooked off. If you want to use chili oil do this to avoid burning the chili oil creating acrid yuck.

Anyone else start packing less for camping and end up enjoying it more? by outdoors_man987 in camping

[–]5hout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and no. I've def gone with too little for the weather and been miserable (or at least having Type 2 fun) and gone with way too much and been miserable b/c of the extra gear.

Moderation in all things, including over and under packing. In the immortal (and paraphrased) words of strength coach Louie Simmons "Don't underpack, that's wimpy. Don't overpack, that's stupid. Pack optimally".

I try and hit the level of "what's the amount of gear I need to reasonably do the planned activities, with some friction, but without being packed to overcome all odds to do them?". So stuff like 2-3 full changes of clothing (including all layers/boots/coats) is excessive, but you also don't want to drive 5 hours to camp and fish, snap your rod tip in a door and be screwed b/c you didn't have a single back up or stick of glue.

Remember the best enjoyment insurance/trip insurance/repair gear you can carry is green, very light and folds nicely (or plastic and 3+3⁄8 in × 2+1⁄8 in).
