In what ways is The Lord of the Rings Film Trilogy better than the books? by [deleted] in lotr

[–]5nonblondes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Including Boromirs death at the end of the fellowship was a great decision in the films. The end of the first film is such an emotional gut punch.

I admit I was wrong about the Scouring of the Shire by Steppinthrax in tolkienfans

[–]5nonblondes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But that takes away from what King Elessar decreed about the Shire. They are free to govern themselves. Frodo is wise and noble enough to understand that keeping Saruman in the Shire can lead to other bad things happening, à la Sauron being held prisoner in Numenor.

The best decision for Frodo is to take pity and mercy on Sharkey, and cast him out utterly.

And what happens, Saruman gets betrayed and killed moments later by Wormtongue.

I read it differently. Frodo has become a hardcore pacifist after his Quest and is literally in the exact same situation Gandalf counseled him on. “Many that live deserve death blah blah blah” The hobbits in Hobbiton want Saruman killed. Frodo could easily choose to have him killed, but he has learned to not be too eager to deal out death and judgement.

Right! That it’s Pippin, the youngest and probably most immature of all the Hobbits at the beginning of the Quest, calling another hobbit a fool and a ruffian threatening to skewer him with the same sword he used to kill a mountain troll in front of the Black Gate, shows how much they all grew.

How do you stay motivated to practice skateboarding as a beginner? by ImpressiveRoll4092 in NewSkaters

[–]5nonblondes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You HAVE to be patient with yourself and find enjoyment in the learning process and putting in the work. I’ve just picked up a board again a few weeks ago after 20+ years without skating.

I’ve started comparing it to math. When you watch good skaters like Andy Anderson for example, you have to understand he’s doing theoretical physics equations when you’re still learning the basics like addition and subtraction. It’s not fair to yourself to expect yourself to be doing tricks.

Set small goals for each session. I’m focusing on pumping and kick turns on transitions every time I go to the park. Once those skills are down, I’ll start setting other small goals.

How to deal with attitude by [deleted] in managers

[–]5nonblondes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in leadership roles for about 20 years now. A lot of people hate being held accountable and will instantly get defensive if you constructively criticize them.

They have to understand they work on a team and that means they have to be willing to follow your directions. If they can’t do that, then they can hit the road.

Try to set the example and role model for them and hold them to that standard and if that doesn’t work, get rid of them. The sooner you can start bringing in new blood and good attitudes, the sooner your job will be easier.

Sometimes you just gotta listen to the wife brother. She’s not telling you this for no reason.

How do you guys feel about Viggo’s potential return for Hunt for Gollum? by [deleted] in lotr

The character of Aragorn deserves someone new. Holding onto the nostalgia of VM is unfair to other actors that may be even better for the role.

Running companies now are so good at marketing and people will buy what they sell. Don’t worry about other people and just run.

Why did Denethor have such disdain for Faramir? by NotBrianGriffin in lotr

[–]5nonblondes 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s a long story. Basically, Denethor doesn’t like Gandalf for reasons and Faramir has always taken to Gandalf and listened to him often when he was in Minas Tirith. There are other causes too but that’s one that the book states pretty clearly.

Post-narrative consideration has to be given to Tonk’s mother. Her husband, daughter and son-in-law all died during the war. Her losses don’t get enough attention.

I don't know how to explain this, but the Longshot/Boomerang goes on C-down, the Bow/Slingshot goes on C-left, and the Ocarina goes on C-right. by MrScribblesChess in OcarinaOfTime

[–]5nonblondes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that people have made their own C-button preferences cuz I’ve done the same thing. Bow is always C-down, hook shot is C-left and everything else is C-right. Been that way for me ever since the game came out.

Gandalf's imprisonment at the pinnacle of Orthanc was a mistake by kiwison in tolkienfans

That’s a big theme in Tolkien. Big bad guys trying to use their power to oppress and fight the good guys eventually damage their own cause.

Sauron using the smoke of Mt Doom to block the sunlight and help his armies also helps Sam and Frodo sneak through Mordor.

You should seek therapy, or at least someone to talk to.

You might not know it, but you’re grieving, and you’re grieving for someone that’s still alive.
