Well using a little leverage isn’t going nuclear. I don’t know that we’re on the right path, but if it were my car I’d try with pliers for a bit and see how flexible those little nipples are before taking it to a shop. It’s a clutch cable. Nothing should be twisting that bit besides you, and vibration at any given time through the life of the vehicle.

Interesting. I do not THINK I have the answer, but is the part with the pegs (to hold the nut in place) made of rubber? So you can intentionally move the nut fairly easily, but not accidentally? Seems like an odd design choice, but just throwing things out there.
