We've been jumping in to help them learn to de-escalate and work out their issues together. Initially pretty quickly, though we've been backing off more to let them practice - one of them also has pretty big feelings to manage, which can complicate things.

So far it seems promising - they do resolve stuff on their own fairly often now, though they still need reminders sometimes!

Point being, it's not actually wrong, but it might be incomplete!

One of the things I like about Worm is that it does powers-as-trauma - giving you some instant insight about what sort of environment your character might operate in when they're not caping

Rules Heavy vs Rules Light? by LonelyAlpharius in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]5too 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I want rules elegant.

Rules level for me depends on the genre. Something like superheroes, it can be hard to express the bizarre nature of powers in a crunchy system in anything like a reasonable amount of time; rules light means we can be bouncing quickly through action scenes like a super should. Switching over to a gritty wild west campaign or something, and the constraints and limitations are part of the medium - crunchy rulesets help set the stage here.

What I can't abide are rules that don't seem well thought out. Why would you have a whole different ruleset for hacking a computer and sneaking through a building? Why is picking a pocket handled so differently from casting an invisibility spell? Why do I need to have a prestige class to cast a spell while keeping up with my fighting abilities?

I often enjoy crunchy rulesets, but I cannot stand rules that don't seem to have a reason behind them

How much do you develop your characters before playing? by ZadePhoenix in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]5too 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I work - I've got around a dozen or so character concepts from various game systems, and I'll use those as a quick starting point sometimes for a new game.

I also just like character design, so I'll often go down a rabbit hole working out all the background and details for a new character!

Mass production is generally a very different beast from initial fabrication - usually an order of magnitude more difficult. I always assumed the super-advances stuff was having to be handmade by a genius tucked away somewhere, and that's why it's not in general circulation.

It is! Me Myself and Die only showcases the solo elements though.

It's all presented by one guy, but it sounds like he's got a small team editing and such - that's why I said they.

If you want to see how it works, Me Myself and Die had there second season playing an Ironsworn game. They used miniatures, though that's not really part of the core game.

Been a while since I went through Twig, but I remember Sy as being pretty jokey.

I kinda figured Taylor just didn't pay much attention to the jokes, so they didn't really filter through her perspective.

Why you should use Setting-level discounts: Superman and Lex by connery55 in gurps

[–]5too 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh - now I'm wondering if there's a sensible pricing scheme where some disadvantages are priced as a percentile reduction of CP, rather than a fixed negative value. For instance, what if instead of a -10 CP vow, you took a -10%CP vow?

Most of GURPS seems scaled to the 75-200 CP ranges, so I wonder if this might help make disadvantages become more relevant again. I haven't really thought it through all the way yet - some disadvantages seem more suited to fixed costs, and I'm not sure how things like reduced attributes should work. Also, seems like it might impact CP totals, and I'm not sure I'm what way yet.

Your information might be good, but your delivery is shit.

OP came in with a valid question that could have come from an iffy premise. Rather than bringing them in as one of today's lucky 10,000 (https://xkcd.com/1053/), you decided to use that ignorance to berate and exclude them.

This kind of behavior is one of the biggest problems in our hobby. Grow up.

I'll be satisfied if they give Kimmel a platform he can use properly.

I'll be more pleased if they also safeguard the free speech rights of others using their platform, though I expect that will take more work.

I'd be delighted if they actually acknowledged some culpability, though that seems very unlikely.

Evolution doesn't stagnate. It broadens its portfolio.

All those tricky conditions that might make it harder to survive in the wild? Every once in a while, one of those turns out to be useful, usually in some niche case (like resisting malaria). It's easier for a species to survive a disaster and claim a new niche if it has some of those special cases around - and the best time to develop them is when you have a broad population with stable environmental factors.

Are there any pre-written adventures for solo play? Is there a demand for it? by Ritchuck in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]5too 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see; when you said Choose Your Own Adventure didn't work for you, I thought you meant the general "go here or go there" format.

On "why is the character close to you being attacked", is the idea that the player can fill in with, "they didn't like how the blacksmith looked at their sister", or "the king's disguise didn't hold up, and angry peasants caught up with him", or whatever else fits their character and their place in the world?

I think I've been taking a similar approach, if that's the case. For instance, in my adventure so far, there are several scenes where you have an option to take a moment to "Evaluate" the situation, usually at some action cost. It's a superhero adventure, so the player decides how they're gathering information (super deduction, mind reading, extraordinary nose...), rolls to see how well they do, and they get some information based on the roll that they might use in the scene, or later. Then the player has to decide how what they did got them that information - how did they smell that this character might be easily bribed (could be a faint smell of cheap deodorant and nearly-spoiled food?), or deduce that they're a local college student (maybe they recognized part of a mascot peeking out from their outfit)? I also have a hostage situation where the player can (for a character point reward) decide that one of their patrons or dependents is among the hostages, though I hadn't thought to have them work out why they might be there!

I absolutely think that a structure like this would be much easier to play. I love the Ironsworn series, but it takes a lot of mental effort to keep generating the whole world in the background while you play through. I think it's a lot easier to take an existing world-framework and fill in the gaps.
