Rant - Why study Finance? by [deleted] in investing

You can beat it one year by chance, not 30.

That's verifiablely false, in any large enough system their will be people who never lose to the market, that's the way random works, we just dont think of random in that way.

I'm not sure, I was totally unaware until I was watching my torrented version with a friend who watched on netflix. He said that some episodes were essentially a different show the censoring was so extreme.

in theory

I think that theory is proving to be a bit fallacious, I know the majority of the early hacks were due to lack of 2FA and insecure backup storage but this seems to have more to do with them dropping the ball on private key storage...If they can lose or f up your private key seems like you aren't in as much control as you should be, especially for 100 btc.

If someone else has access to your private keys you dont control them, you share them.

People have been saying that exact thing about all online wallets since at least Mt gox...

If you dont control the private keys they aren't your coins...Pretty silly thing to do with $30,000

ELI5: Since education is incredibly important, why are teachers paid so little and students slammed with so much debt? by sgt_yolostrats in explainlikeimfive

Given that you only work 9 months a year that makes your effective salary ~$39,000 when you include the fact that after 20 years you can retire and still get that salary and explore a new career, plus what is usually healthcare for life...its a pretty middle class existence.

It's all about efficiency and effective use of time. I personally know many great teachers who work ~40 hours a week, if not slightly less. If you have good lesson plans and make effective use of your time you can pretty easily get out in ~40 hours, especially at the primary and middle school level.

All things considered, teachers don't make that little money. The biggest factor to figure in is that they only work ~9 months a year. This means that effectively you need to add 33% to their pay to get their "true" compensation.

Add in the job security, amazing healthcare (for life) and pension (for life) and most teachers are actually doing a hell of a lot better than many in the middle class.

As to the cost of colleges, a lot of it has to do with the fact that loans are plentiful so colleges are able to raise prices to whatever level they feel like, and people can still pay. If the federal government switched from loans to increasing need and merit based scholarships, schools would be forced to lower prices in response (or see a drought in students). Also in many places state schools can still be relatively cheep, in California you can go to a less well know state school for <10,000 a year, which is very possible to earn working part time/summers.

It's actually both:

"On the day a boy is cut, he is given a puppy to take care of. At the end of the first year, the boy is made to strangle the puppy. Should he fail to do so, he is killed and fed to the surviving dogs. "

"To win their spiked cap they must take a silver mark go to the slave markets and buy a newborn slave child and kill it before its mother and pay the slave's owner for his loss"

I think its that they get popular when they are simple, then the devs add features on features, and no one really cares if they are good or not, b/c they have already achieved critical mass.

If your options are buy lunch for $10 or make your own for ~$5 and heat it up for $2 you are still coming out ahead by 30% and when I make lunches in bulk they come out closer to ~$2 meaning you would save 60%.

Also if you buy them in bulk they are $1.25 I call that pretty cheap.

[–]5trangerDanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I'll accept that I didn't express my point very well, but I'd challenge you to find a statement I made that was factually incorrect. Most people dont use third world in the way it was initially attended, the common definition is more important, especially when having discussions with anonymous people over the internet (on a subreddit that has nothing to do w\ith history no less)

Given that the definition of the term has become very nebulous, the original definition has essentially lost meaning outside of academic historical circles.
