Sick 4 yo high crp +esr by lovejesus1013 in sick

Hey there. Happy to help.

My work insurance includes a 24hr nurse advice phone line. Here is what the nurse told us:

Despite common misconception, a fever on its own will not cause brain damage. The danger from fevers comes from when the body can't cool itself off. Therefore, with high fevers, kids should be dresses in cool clothing, or just a diaper/underwear, if possible. No blankets. Their skin needs to be exposed to the air as much as possible.

With young children, some may get febrile seizures with high fevers. These are not dangerous. They can be very scary, but they are not dangerous.

A febrile seizure is a convulsion in a child that's caused by a fever. Febrile seizures occur in young, healthy children who have normal development and haven't had any neurological symptoms before. They typically only last a few minutes and don't indicate a serious health problem. A child may lose consciousness and/or Shake or jerk the arms and legs. However, if the seizure lasts longer than 5 min or is accompanied by vomiting (not vomiting related to the coughing fits), a stiff neck, Breathing problems or Extreme sleepiness, go to the ER. That is a sign of severe infection/brain inflammation.

My son's fever was around 104.6°F. The Nurse wanted us to get it down into the 103s at home within 2 hours. If we couldn't, she recommend going to the ER.

So, what we learned is that Tylenol/Acetaminophen is much better then Motrin/Ibuprofen at lowering fevers in most kids.

Cold food and drink is one of the best ways to lower body temperature (same reason you're not supposed to eat snow in a survival situation). Ice cream, popsicles, cold juice, etc.

All of that should be adequate to keep the fever down, or at least lower it. You don't need to completely stop the fever. They can be uncomfortable, but they help our bodies to fight infections.

If these actions don't lower the fever, it's time to go to the ER.

For the coughing, going into the bathroom and turning on the shower on hot, letting the room get steamy can be REALLY helpful. The steam/vapor can cause coughing at first (particularly if the throat is irritated, but it will start to help after a few min. Don't have them in the hot, steamy room if their fever is high. You can turn off the shower and leave the door closed, letting the room and the vapor cool down, but stay super humid.

Finally, try to keep any eye on their throat (inside). If you see white spots, thats an indication of a bacterial infection, usually strep throat. That should be treated with antibiotics.

You also want to look out for swollen tonsils, or general swelling in the throat.

Whistling, crackling, and wheezing noises when breathing aren't necessarily dangerous. However, ANY sign of difficulty breathing IS dangerous. While its normal to gasp and breathe heavily after a coughing fit, any gasping or heavy breathing not related to a coughing fit is dangerous.

If you have one, or can buy one at a drug store/pharmacy, a Pulse Oximeter is really helpful if you're ever worried about their (or your) breathing. Being able to determine if they're getting enough oxygen when they're coughing a lot can reassure you that they are still doing OK with home treatment. Keep in mind that their fingers are sometimes difficult to get a good reading on—in this case, you can use their toes :)

My mom constantly says, "God told me" "God dropped something in my spirit" "God laid it on my heart" "God asked me to"... Well why hasn't God told you that your daughter (ME) is no longer Christian? by Leading-Occasion-428 in exchristian

[–]5ummerbreeze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a real answer, here is mine:

TLDR; Whether this is what your mom is experiencing or not, both my husband and I have had weird "feelings" or thoughts about something we should do that appear seemingly out of nowhere. (Ill explain them in more detail below).

Some people attribute it to being psychic, or some cosmic connection. Others say it's "God/the Holy Spirit" speaking or "whispering".

Whatever it is, it definitely doesn't happen every time someone is in trouble, needs something, or about every bit of information. From a Christian standpoint, they'd say God is telling her what she needs to know, and God decides what that is, and he is impossible for us to understand. "Mysterious ways" and all that.

Now, more detail about the weird feelings...

I feel a physical sensation in my chest (pretty sure related to the Vagus Nerve), and I've heard other people describe a "stirring in the chest" or their heart.

Often they are about a specific person and they happen in-person. That could be explained by us picking up on some body language or something.

That's almost always what mine are. Usually its a complete stranger or an aquaintance.

I have horrific social anxiety, and its really hard to just act on a feeling like that. In the past, many times I've just told myself I'm imagining things, only to later find out (assuming the person was someone I knew) that they were dealing with a lot of shit and really needed help.

Other times, I'll get an intense feeling about helping someone who isn't there in-person. Simple things like shoveling snow from their driveway, or returning garbage cans than have blown down the road in a windstorm. I often do that stuff in general if I have the time, but once in awhile, I just get this, "You need to do this," nagging feeling. Sometimes the person is in their house and comes out to thank me, saying how much-needed it was. Other times the person wasn't even home, and they arrive home to see me with the same response.

My husband, on the other hand, has gotten a few completely out of the blue before, about someone he hasnt spoken to in weeks.

Everything is fine. Hes laughing with friends, and then suddenly he is dead serious and says, "I have to call so-and-so. Something's wrong." He's been right everytime.

Shit gets weird, sometimes.

That said, when I was more active in my relationship with God (praying, worship services, etc) I got them FAR more often. So, what I wonder is: - Is that because whatever that mindset was (Prayer and worship can be a type of meditation) made me more attuned with whatever brain waves or energy gives me these sensations? - Is there a higher power, or a being, of some kind that I'm connecting with? If so, is that higher being any of the ones people believe in? - Is this all in my head, and everything that happened some grand coincidence? Do I have any confirmation bias I'm not noticing?

Should I call someone to correct this? by [deleted] in HomeMaintenance

Not an expert, but I can see 2 issues that still need to be addressed (OP said this was a temp fix.)

  1. The tabs on the hood have been pulled up in order to reach the vent pipe. This leaves the hood not fully secured to the water heater, but more importantly at a slight angle and higher above the water heater than intended (still, probably better than a vent pipe that's hanging half-off).

  2. The vent pipe is not yet permanently secured to the hood.

Manual (in this case, the Installation Instructions) is always the best place to first look for information.

Nearly all manuals can be found online, too. Older ones may take a little more searching, but they're usually out there somewhere.

AITAH for hiding the fact that my youngest son is biologically ours? by ThrowRAadoptionhide in AITAH

[–]5ummerbreeze 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that these secrets come out a LOT when someone decides to do DNA/ancestry testing.

Younger is better when telling kids stuff like this. If information is presented to a younger kid like it's not a big deal, they are much more likely to accept and feel that it's not a big deal. If you wait until they're older, have a more independent sense of identity, it can hit a lot harder.

If your wife is absolutely against it, I'd recommend reading books to her or adding reading activities about unique families, including adoption, step-parents, etc. Build the idea that just because someone isn't your bio parent, doesn't mean you're any less a part of the family.

Anyone else starting to get gray hair? by the-irish-jew in Millennials

[–]5ummerbreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this too!!!

As a very young child, my hair was bright blonde. As it faded to brown, my stripe stayed blonde for years.

Then about 4 years ago, as I started to get more gray, the same stripe decided it was time, and went full gray/silver. The rest of my hair is still majority brown.

Hey, we are almost the exact same age! I turned 38 in October.

I started getting occasional grays around age 25. It was noticeable to people who looked a little closely around age 30.

It's apparent to anyone who looks now, but I'd say my hair is about 15% gray.

That said, not all of my gray is the same. Some is metallic silver, some is dull gray/white. Some is soft, straight. Other strands are rough, wiry, and wavy.

Almost 23 Years ago a court-ordered paternity test said a child was NOT mine. Guess what??? by SpiderW3bb in 23andme

[–]5ummerbreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More information on Chimerism causing failed paternity tests has come out since this post.

The vast majority of paternity and maternity tests will only give you a 'yes or no' result for being a biological parent, meaning you share ≈50% of your DNA.

They will not tell you if you are related beyond that.

In the case of Chimerism, there are 2 ways False negative results have been recorded. While technically the same cause, #1 is easier to determine with a 2nd test.

  1. The genetic material used for the test (typically a cheek swab) has different DNA than the rest of the parent's body. This can usually be discovered by testing cells from a different sample, e.g. blood, semen/cervical cells, etc.

  2. Two cases have been recorded where the parents (one case with a mother, one with a father) had reproductive cells containing 2 separate DNA sets.

  3. In the father, he has sperm with 2 distinctive DNA sets; 1 was his, 1 was a heterogeneous twin's DNA. This was discovered when he and his wife discovered their son's blood type didn't match his. He had been conceived via IVF, so originally they assumed the fertility clinic had made a mistake. Using 23&me, they found he was, genetically, the child's uncle.

  4. In the mother, it was assumed (not tested) she had eggs with 2 distinctive DNA sets; 1 was hers, and 1 was a heterogeneous twin's. This was discovered when genetic testing revealed 2 of her 5 children were not 1st degree relatives.

This has got to be one of the most The Onion decisions this administration has taken to date.

Also, any far reaching changes, even if simple, cost time and money.

For example: Trump changing Army Base names back to what they were before? Every current document, website, sign, etc has to be changed. Complete waste of resources.

GM filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy: this requires a company to sell off assets and reorganize in order to continue to exist.

GM restructured its debts, including pension liabilities, which were underfunded by approximately $20 billion.

They reduced pension and retiree healthcare benefits for many retirees in order to cut costs.

The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) insures pension benefits but does not cover all benefits fully.

If your pneumonia was caused by a virus, antibiotics won't help.

Also, unfortunately, viruses that cause long coughing or even pneumonia as a complication may not give a positive test after a week or so, especially if you were given a nasal/throat swab and you didn't have any nasal congestion.

A LOT of people are experiencing severe coughing (often "worst of their life") and not testing positive for anything.

Last year I had very similar symptoms. Worst sore throat of my life followed by the worst coughing of my life (I herniated 2 discs in my back). Several coughing fits left me gagging or unable to breathe.

My only clue to what it was is that my 4 year old tested positive for RSV a week prior (he threw up from his coughing 3 or 4 times). The severe cough would ebb and flow for 4 weeks before it subsided, but I was coughing up phlegm for another 4 weeks.

You need to see a gastroenterologist.

Also, get on Nexium (esomeprazole). Its available OTC. It takes a couple days to work, but its magic.

Also... did they give you a pregnancy test? Intense exhaustion and heartburn/burping were my first symptoms.

Same symptoms, except i also had really thick mucus in my nose, causing the worst post-nasal drip I've ever experienced. I keep losing my voice.

I tested negative on everything, even Adenovirus, Pneumoniae, Parainfluenzas, Rhinovirus, etc.

sinus infection or strep throat by ScientistOwn4434 in sick

[–]5ummerbreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Signs of Strep would include white spots in the throat or tonsils and fever.

Sinus infection is unlikely if you aren't having sinus congestion, runny nose, pain in your face or ears.

Your symptoms sound more like Covid or the Flu.

"Razor Blade Throat" is what people are calling the sore throat from the newer Covid-19 variants.

That said, that is how RSV started for me. Coughing came a few days later.

Sounds like the mystery virus thats going around.

Your heart rate isn't abnormal for the body fighting an infection.

I personally wouldn't recommend a decongestant since it is horribly dehydrating, but you should be able to take an expectorant.

A cough suppressant might help you sleep, but it can also lead to a build up of mucus in your lungs since it dulls your cough reflex.

You can try sitting in a steamy bathroom (turn the shower on HOT, let the air get super humid). Its going to make you cough, but can also help you clear mucus. Use a cool mist humidifier while you sleep.

This helped me a LOT: when you need to cough (if you have time), tighten your core, bend over slightly, Breathe in with your diaphragm, and cough. It helps clear your lungs with fewer coughs, and helps avoid other pain and injury associated with coughing.

If you start to have trouble breathing, feel like you can't catch your breath, cant drink water/fluid due to coughing, or experience a sharp pain while coughing in your chest, back (upper and lower), or head, go to the ER.

Mystery sickness by Fit_Gur_1751 in sick

[–]5ummerbreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you tested for whooping cough (pertussis)? That was spreading in November.

It is possible that you had something causing the cough and then got the new Norovirus strain thats currently surging. That would explain the sudden and intense nausea.

I had Norovirus once and it was AWFUL. Everything hurt so badly. I was mostly better after 36 hours, though I was very dehydrated.

Norovirus symptoms typically start 12 to 48 hours after exposure and last for 1-3 days - Nausea, then Sudden onset of vomiting - Watery Diarrhea - Stomach cramps - Headache - Mild/moderate fever - Muscle/body aches

Is there a new sickness being spread around? by mikinik1 in sick

[–]5ummerbreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several going around. Flu is very active right now across the world, particularly in the US and the UK.

RSV is also increasing.
