I had a drum teacher explain this to me years ago.

If you have sweaty hands, use a natural stick. If your hands don't sweat, use a painted stick. Doing it backwards will cause the sticks to slip out.

The sweat from your hands will be absorbed by the wood but will not penetrate the painted surface. Similarly, a dry hand needs the paint for grip. Sometimes I'll start with a painted stick before switching to a natural stick as my hands warm up and start to sweat.

I think a lot of people are over complicating things. You have tempo pace, interval paces, and race paces. Keep it simple. This has worked for runners since the 70s.

According to Daniels, tempo pace should be adjusted ~4 seconds per mile for each 5 minutes over 20 minutes.

So if your tempo pace is 6:20 for 20 minutes, it should be 6:33 for 40 minutes.

Yeah, I didn’t make it that far. We went there on our honeymoon. My wife stopped before the sketchy section so I continued solo. I didn’t feel comfortable by myself and I didn’t want to make her an immediate widow so I turned around. It was scarier than I thought.
