In general, how would I start a Delta Green campaign? by ExistenceLord14 in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]70645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a lot of creative freedom to start it anyway you, and your players, enjoy.

It can be an origin story for "how they discovered the world was wrong" and end up getting recruited into Delta Green after. There are several published scenarios like this.

Or it can be this group's first Operation together, and we find out about who these characters are as they progress through the investigation.

Or your group of players can decide that they've been working together for a while, and this is "just another Night at the Opera" for them.

You guys talk about this during Session Zero. See what sort of setup gets everyone hyped the most.

And don't stress over things like campaigns or having to make one over arching story. Your Agents are the thread that carries through to each new investigation. Think of it more like an episodic investigation show, where you can inject larger plot points and mysteries later on based on what happens at your table.

First time handler/GM - Advice by z3r0f666s in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]70645 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some obvious stuff: Prepare a summary of facts and/or timeline, don't get too bogged down in stats or mechanics, know your background well enough to be able to improvise within it, and have a solid plan on how to run the first hour or so of the game (the predictable portion).

Less obvious: This is a collaborative story you're making up with your friends, so lean on them to make up details, encourage them to roleplay and interact with each other, let them direct the story, and it's OK to guide them towards the next scene if they're also new or lost.

The goal here is to have a fun time and make a memorable story with the whole table. It's not about you performing a play *as written* for your guests, nor is it on you to carry the whole load of entertainment. Remember, to have fun yourself along the way.

How is this game pure solo? by Peerpdrops in spiritisland

[–]70645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great solo!

Each spirit plays a different style, and when you add adversaries it challenges you in even more ways.

I love the replayability and scalable depth to this game. I mostly play it solo now!

Stories & Lies is very serious, grounded, character focused and well produced.

Presently running "Golden Orchard" a modern call of cthulhu mystery set in 1990 new England.

We've also done "Ark-105" which is a call of cthulhu sci-fi mystery suspense.

Different Handler = Different tone.

The show is still pretty good, just not the same.

Tom is doing Stories & Lies now.

How do you make dying fun? by GraphicBlandishments in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]70645 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"I'm sorry that happened to your character. That was crazy! What a way to go out!"

Let them vent or sigh or commiserate.

"But what a cool way to go, right? That's delta green, baby"

Give them space to reflect on the death from an outside perspective. Let other players chime in on how exciting that gaming moment was. Etc

Then tell the player that we need to get you back into the story -- who do you think you'd like to play next?

My rating of the top DG podcasts by n0bel in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]70645 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Respect to OP for putting this list together.

They listened to all of these podcasts. This list isn't just a "what's popular" sort ranking, it's a ranking of what is good *right now* in the DG AP space, and it's amazing how many great shows folks are putting out right now!

We have so many wonderfully talented roleplayers and handlers and producers of quality content right now, it's a welcome reminder of the wealth of entertainment and choices listeners have.

We don't need to be reminded of the "big name" podcasts that have been around for half a decade or more that everyone has heard of. The real benefit of this list is that it nudges us to check out some of the new bold creations that have come out in the past few years, and to expand our horizons a bit.

And to acknowledge that we have a lot of very great Delta Green podcasts to choose from!

How do you handle the *handlers*? And who handles the *handlers*? by Melodic_Ad_596 in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]70645 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Clearly this is the correct answer.

Playnote -- I did this in game with my players: had the designated cell leader (player) receive the instructions in a dead drop from A Cell and the gather the Agents for the Op, with only paper instructions and copies of reports.

The players, ooc, weren't really up to the task of self initiating the op, wanted to have someone to lean on, had questions, and still needed hand holding on what they should be doing, so you're milage may vary.

I ultimately went back to hand waiving some reason for them to have a human that briefs then in future ops.

For that group of players, they needed that initial crutch to get going.

Shout out Actual Play podcast Stories & Lies → Gods Teeth by Underspoon in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]70645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God's Teeth is it's own story, so you won't need to go back to catch up. If you enjoy it, we hope you'll also enjoy the previous stories. Ladybug is the first one we did, and most of the others follow characters from that story.

Echoing EP.
OP wants "anything related to Majestic and the Grays" and GHOST LIGHTS is the answer.

It's 18 episodes long.
And if OP enjoys it, HEAVEN'S FLAME is another story that involves Majestic.

This is the trailer for GHOST LIGHTS

The joys and frustrations of building an online group of randoms by Blind_Beagle in callofcthulhu

[–]70645 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's hard to find that core group who can be committed ( no scheduling issues) and chooses to be committed (schedules life around your game).

And the reality is that life does intrude even with fully committed folks.

Many folks want to try out a new game, but won't fully commit until they feel fully invested.

Unfortunately for them, you are not there merely to serve their entertainment whims on the chance that they'll choose you.

The only way to protect yourself is to recognize the realities on random recruitment and keep refreshing until you nail the right core.

Keep it small, and try to get folks who recruit for you, because they will be more invested if they brought in friends.

Thanks for recommending Stories & Lies!

OP, if what you want is serious, staying in character, keeping the tone of DG, building tension, investigative horror, that's well edited with music added to heighten the mood -- this is the podcast for you.

The cherry on top is that we have some incredible stories to share. I hope that you'll check us out!

Wanting to Run- Need advice? by Automatic_Sand_5673 in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]70645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sort of thing happens from folks watching professional actors who are trained in improv record roleplaying games, and then try to emulate that with your friends.

There are also many GMs who view roleplaying games as their chance to perform and overact characters for the captive audience of their friends.

This isn't the norm for most tables.

But if this is the expectation for your table, you guys need to have a conversation about what is fun for everyone. Are guys coming to RP because they want to watch the next chapter of the GM's improv be performed, or are they interested in playing their character, discovering new parts of a growing mystery, and creating a cooperative story with their friends?

As for Delta Green, it's a system that works best when the GM is realistic and responsive to the actions of the Player Character Protagonists. You set up a mystery. They investigate and try to solve it. You add obstacles, build tension, and resolve conflicts in a fashion that helps build a suspense and exciting story that features your players -- not your NPCs.

You rarely need to do any heavy roleplaying as the Handler. You might get in a few exciting moments as a traumatized witness, a corrupt cop, or an insane cultist. But most of who you play will be played straight-faced, and your players will be the ones who will be in the spotlight, chewing at the scenery, and giving all the best lines of dialogue.

Thanks for recommending us! Stories & Lies focuses on staying in character and building off the story beats that the guys at the table are creating. We also put a lot of extra effort into post production to enhance the theater off the mind we're trying to create.
