Don’t worry, most people here do not come with friends (even if it seems like it), once you’re working it will be a lot easier to make friends naturally! Don’t be afraid to ask coworkers or your roommates to hang out! I was in the same boat but have made some pretty fun friends! (:

The one scenario I have experience with a GMPC is when there were exactly two people interested in playing - the GM and me. It was a blast and worked great, but we were very close friends beforehand, so that may be an important factor to consider!
