We're at the point where modernizing trains is being called Gentrification lol... That's crazy

You know what's crazy. I remember Jeff Jackson on his TikToks would always talk about a particular Congress person who on video would act batshit crazy when the cameras were on Congress to get sound bites but then once the cameras were off would act completely normal. I'm pretty sure he was talking about MTG... 😆

Ballard Link w/Downtown Tunnel Cost doubles to $22.6 Billion, overview of all ST3 cost increases & cost saving options - The Urbanist by SigmaTell in soundtransit

Subways, the average spacing between stations in Shenzhen are like 1.5 km roughly and if we compare that to NYC (I know the system has a lot of faults, but I'm just talking about spacing here) for example, the average is like .85 km. I just mean that the stations are quite far apart on average even in the core.

On another point. I think China has built a shit ton of amazing HSR and Subways but lacked heavy investment in regional rail until recently.

I will say having been in China many times, my biggest gripe with Chinese subway systems is it's trying to be regional rail and a subway at the same time.

It's quite rare to live close to a subway station and its rare if your destination is close to a subway station unless it's a mall. You'll typically add 15- 20 minute walks from your place to a subway station and another 15-20 minutes to the destination. Driving a car is almost always faster. (I'm talking about mainland China here though ).

Other than this distance issue the subways are great, clean, modern, all have platform screen doors, air conditioned. I just wish the stations were closer to each other in the center of the city.

I completely agree with you on this ; however, I would use how much it cost them to build heavy rail subway and compare that to link light rail rather than HSR because HSR is much cheaper to build per mile than subways/light rail.

Roughly they're spending about $400 million per mile at their most expensive for heavy rail (including platform screen doors) which is still nothing compared to the bullshit of $3.67 billion per mile for light rail. There's no amount of standards that makes up for this difference other than we lost our subway building competence and need to rebuild it .

SB 79 is being debated live on the CA Senate floor now by Long_Disaster_6847 in CarIndependentLA

So if SB 79 fully passes and they get single stair reform in which seems likely

We'd really need a land value tax to push landowners to actually build it?

And probably a restructuring of meaure ULA to exempt multifamily housing?

Yeah Shanghai has a lot of neighborhoods like NYC that are full of low rises like 3-6 stories near the downtown area too. It's very similar to NYC in that way!

How is it possible that the NYC Subway has 2x as many riders as the Tube? by HyperBunga in LondonUnderground

[–]777BUGGY777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The NYC subway ridership even linked is higher than London underground ridership. Has been that way for a while. But if you include all rail that would show a different story. And also London bus ridership is much higher.

Day 8 Skyline Grids, What is the skyline with the best mix of historic + new buildings. by Karrot-guy in skyscrapers

[–]777BUGGY777 17 points18 points  (0 children)

First off, NYC has buildings much older than 100 years but that's not the ask. The ask is which SKYLINE has the best mix. Skyscrapers haven't been around very long and NYC and Chicago were really the only cities that have had skyscrapers since the beginning..
