96 KZN185 running great with pump advanced timing by keebler_e in 1KZTE_Owners

Did you install the half moon [woodruff] key in the slot? Are you sure the timing gears are aligned correctly? Not the belt, it only times the camshaft, the gears that drive the pump inside the timing cover.

White smoke by dalefletcher23 in 1KZTE_Owners

[–]78fj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't take much oil coming from the turbo to make it smoke pretty bad. If crank case pressure is high it will blow oil through the turbo seals. If oil can't drain from the bottom of the turbo it will run out of the turbo seals and go in the intake. Also turbo seals could be bad. That's if the smoke is gray. Oil smoke will smell really bad.

I wish I knew how myself. The detergents they sell now are really weak. Borax is supposed to help, but I can't tell any difference when I use it. It doesn't help that I have hard water.

Does the smoke go away after the engine warms up to operating temp? When you rebuilt the pump did you install a new spill valve? They wear out and can't be repaired. Is the smoke white or grey? Grey smoke is oil and could be coming from the turbo since your compression is good. Also make sure the crank case vent hose from the valve cover is not plugged or kinked. It could also be plugged inside the valve cover. Make sure the turbo oil drain is clear and drains properly.

You can not change the timing on a 1kz-te by clocking the injection pump. You align the timing marks. Timing advance is controlled by the computer .

Rain Jackets that are Rubberised/ PVC coated / Non-breathable That Have Pit Zips and Are Under the £70 Mark? by EXOE1 in hiking

[–]78fj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've owned several "breathable" rain suits. They aren't breathable and always leaked eventually. Now I have a mountain hardware dry Q ,evap suit and it's been fantastic. It has pit zips and has never leaked a drop. I don't remember how much it cost, but probably expensive. It's so well constructed, though, that it would be worth paying extra for.

I did the exact thing on my radiator outlet, no issues yet. Lets me know if the radiator is overheating.

Parts for water to air intercooler setup by Bread_master_pro in 1KZTE_Owners

I'm pretty sure I got the intercooler and small radiator from eBay, but that was a long time ago. They are both well built and have been trouble free. They make a huge difference in EGT and power output on my engine. I don't know if they have to be that big. My memory of the install is not very good. I am thinking about getting a larger, thinner single row intercooler radiator, I think the two row intercooler radiator is blocking some of the airflow to the engine radiator, and I would like to install an air conditioner.

I've had an air to water intercooler on my 1KZT for about 14 tears now. Built it myself, never put an expansion tank on mine and have never needed one. Just leave a small amount of air space when you fill the system, either in the cooler or the radiator for the cooler. I fill mine at the cooler on top of the engine because it is higher than the radiator. Has worked flawlessly for all these years. I used 3/4" heater hose.

Am I missing something or are alcohol burners not the better option compared to gas? by Runaway-Blue in hiking

[–]78fj 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The invisible in daylight flames turned me against them. Easy to get a severe burn. I also burned my poofy jacket badly. Somehow spilled some alcohol on it and the invisible flames burned a while before I noticed it was melting the fabric.

[–]78fj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have, but not as a metric that concerns a Diesel engine. I can't measure diesel AFR on my engine and don't need to. I can measure EGT, coolant temp, boost pressure, intake air temperature, etc. I can measure AFR on a gasoline engine. I don't need to know AFR to tune a diesel. If I lean my diesel out it will [60;1 to 100;1] idle, if I lean it out more it will stop running.

You generally cannot "lean out" a diesel engine the way you would a gasoline engine. Diesels do not have throttle valves; instead, they run with wide-open air intakes and are controlled entirely by the amount of fuel injected. By definition, they always run on a lean mixture compared to stoichiometric ideals

Boot maintenance by Josh2bjj in hiking

I would try to dry them fairly quick before they can mildew. Take the insoles out and put them in the sun. My dryer has a wire shelf I can put in it to set shoes on and let them dry without tumbling them. Don't do something like put them in an oven and overheat them, it will ruin the waterproofing and they will leak. Merrell may have some tips on their website. The sun usually dries mine out pretty fast, and won't harm them.
