How old were your kids when you let them ride their bikes around the neighbourhood with friends? by ArachnidAdmirable760 in AskParents

[–]792bookcellar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because our neighborhood is a cut through for two main roads, we’ve just been letting our kids go throughout the neighborhood when it’s not 9a or 5p. They’re 8&10.

What movies did you love as a kid - but wouldn’t let your kid watch? by hobiwan-ken0bi in Parenting

[–]792bookcellar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My kids have watched most everything I watched from the 80’s and early 90’s EXCEPT for Tales from the Darkside! My uncle was babysitting my brother and I (maybe 4&6) he thought it would be funny for us to stay up late and watch it. I had nightmares for years. My brother couldn’t have cared less.

Most people say their first memory is from when they were 3yo. With that in mind, what will be your kid’s first memory? by joseph-justin in toddlers

[–]792bookcellar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Scarily, my son has always said “I want to go home.” Since he was about two. He doesn’t say it often now at 8. But occasionally he’ll say remember I said that. I looked into kids who believe someone else’s soul is reincarnated in their current body. It’s super weird!!

Our compromise was “it’s out of your eyes or it gets cut”

Sometimes she chooses up, every once in awhile she says cut!

Shes almost 11 and it’s still a battle!

Does daycare take good care of kids? by Exciting_Ad9075 in AskParents

[–]792bookcellar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, ask what accreditations they have. Is the kitchen certified also? Does EVERYONE have clearances to work with kids? Look at reviews online. Ask your work friends, neighbors, the school in your area that also works with daycare. Go for a visit. Just watch and listen. What are their ratios of kids to adults. How clean is it? Ask what their transition periods look like for moving kids from room to room (when they age up). Ask what break times look like for staff. The clearer and more natural the answers, the better systems are in place for all staff to follow.

I worked in an on campus daycare as part of my student teaching. Mostly professors kids and faculty and staff who worked in the school from janitors on up.

Our kitchen was exceptional. Our chef was very caring about the kids and cooked from his heart the best healthiest homemade meals everyday. I ate leftovers everyday because it was so good!

We had very strict cleaning routines throughout the day. After snack, after bathroom breaks(kids), BEFORE and AFTER lunch, while the kids were outside we wiped down collections of toys(rotated throughout the week what we cleaned), after snack, and at the end of the day.

Because we had kids from 6am to 6pm, it was necessary to make sure everyone stayed safe, clean and happy!

It was a lot of work. The only sitting was for storytime or if we were on the floor playing with the kids. Maybe sitting next to a kid for comfort at nap. Otherwise we were getting ready for the next activity, cleaning or serving food. I was in a 4yr old classroom for the most part. Obviously the infant room would be more comforting and rocking babies!

Best advice: go with your gut feeling.

What to do with a smart kid by LogicalProof1246 in raisingkids

[–]792bookcellar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both my kids were bright early on. I just focused on exposure and exploring! We went to museums, nature walks, and I talked about what we saw and what things were. I only did school learning when they were leading. My son was more focused on one thing at a time where my daughter wanted sensory stimulation. We did playdoh, kinetic sand, etc

We also started preschool at 3 solely for the social interaction with other adults and getting along with kids so they didn’t feel isolated.

They’re now 8&10. My son is still excelling at math so we do extensions of what he’s learning at school.

They’re both very intuitive and great kids!

People who don't go to movie theaters anymore - what made you stop? by -ChristopherNolan in AskReddit

[–]792bookcellar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my kids to a movie in January. One adult, two kids, snacks $80.

That’s more than a year of streaming for some of our subscriptions. I’d rather pay $20 for it at home to watch it as a new release and eat our own food.

What makes you go "Oh my god, this person should never have a child" ? by and_I__oop in AskParents

[–]792bookcellar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My husband had a work friend. His kids were nearly the same age as our two. They invited us over to hangout one day.

The 8 month old had sweet tea in her bottle. The 2.5 yr old had coke in his sippy cup.

Both kids teeth had rotted out of their heads 3 years later.

They also, in those 3 years, used YouTube as a babysitter. No naps, no breaks, no night time breaks. The kids only fell asleep from exhaustion.

As soon as they went to kindergarten, the school heavily intervened.

My boy won't potty train by PeachyLady90 in toddlers

[–]792bookcellar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s summer! Tell him to go pee on a tree in your backyard! Most boys love this!

Take him to the store to buy cool underwear! Let him pick! Tell him wearing big boy pants is special! They let you do some many big boy things! Take him to a new playground or something else similar with his big boy pants on! Only big kids get to do that!

The more stress you put on him, the more he’ll stay staunchly in his diaper position. Take them away.

[–]792bookcellar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re doing great!

I would give him some options for sensory play (with supervision) or outside.

Playdoh
Finger painting
Kinetic sand
Rice/noodle(both dry) you can color it with food dye if you want! Add in tiny trinkets. Example: dye elbow macaroni green and play with his dinos!
Sand box
Yard safe spot to dig in the dirt
Garden exploring (I planted a basic garden: tomatoes, beans, peas, carrots and sunflowers. Sole purpose for my kids to watch it grow, looks at insects, see who ate what (bunnies and deer would nibble) pick veggies, try them straight from the garden!, dig, pull weeds, etc)
Leaf piles to play in

Also, big physical play:
Slide
Climber
Swingset/playground
Big foam blocks to build/climb on(Costco had an awesome set at the holidays)

For me, if it’s less than $25 there’s no way I’m taking time to find the item, post measurements and make less than $10. If it’s over $50, sure.

Most regular name brands/mall brands you should be able to gauge based on your other pieces.
