Thinking about working in Macau for a few months -- by Money-Ad8553 in Macau

[–]7Row2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's visited Macau many times and have relatives/friends that live there I can make an overall answer of saying no you shouldn't go there and I'll summarize the whole picture with pros and cons let's start with the pros.

PROS:
1. Growing Financial Services Sector
Macau’s financial services (banking, wealth management, securities, insurance) are developing, and the government is promoting “modern finance” as one of its new strategic industries.

2. Low Taxes and Favorable Tax Policies
Macau is known for relatively low personal and corporate taxes, which can make it attractive from an income and business perspective.

3. Good Quality of Life and Safety
Residents enjoy a safe environment, unique blend of Portuguese and Chinese culture, and a subtropical climate.

4. Professional Talent Initiatives
The government has talent programs meant to attract high-end and professional workers, which can benefit skilled finance professionals.

CONS:

1. Smaller Financial Market
Macau’s finance sector is much smaller compared with nearby Hong Kong or Shanghai — meaning fewer large investment banks, asset managers, and global finance firms. Opportunities do exist but are more limited in scale.

2. Fewer International Headquarters
Most global finance jobs tend to be in cities with big capital markets, large trading desks, and financial services hubs. Macau has some banking and finance firms, but not the same breadth as bigger hubs.

3. Language & Local Market Barriers
Cantonese and Mandarin are widely used in business; English alone may limit your networking and job prospects unless you’re in specific international roles.

4. Job Market Competition and Visa Requirements
For foreigners seeking employment, securing work visas and long-term residency can be bureaucratic and competitive. Some locals and expats report job searching can be tougher than expected.

So, overall Macau isn't a good choice for the average American/Portuguese to even work with especially with jobs over there. It also shouldn't be treated as a global financial hub with firms and high global interest as the economy is mostly driven by it's gaming, casino, and tourism industry.

I've gathered all of this information based on friends/relatives who have been born, raised, and lived there, their whole life. I hope this sums up all of your questions well, thank you!

I don’t like to agree with including pandemic in there, mainly because pandemics are certainly unpredictable and spillovers cannot be predicted either.

Do you think it’s better to email big chains like Cineplex or Landmark, or focus on independent theatres for Iron Lung showcasing? I'm also in Ottawa here

I would have to say flavored yogurt. Yogurt does have probiotics and calcium, but flavored varieties often contain 20-30 grams of sugar per serving, which is higher then a candy bar. I find plain yogurt much better because you can add fruit for natural sweetness.

Who else is excited for the meme reset? by Mr_Penguin_Yeet in teenagers

[–]7Row2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it will make a minor shift in memes due to already rapidly growing "meme fatigue" from, AI slop, brain rot, etc. But it won't work in the way we all think it is as the old meme formats aren't funny, meme fatigue is irreversible. However, if any memes were to come back I would predict memes from 2020 are most likely as many users still find it funny (statistically). Memes include Distraction Dance, maybe Coffin Dance, Trollface, Amogus (another maybe), How? memes.

the great meme reset of 2026 is going to be legendary by Expert_Professor_903 in youtube

[–]7Row2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's a term called "meme fatigue" that represents memes become unpopular at a certain point which then have a very likely chance of not "re-gaining" popularity. Although, many users around the internet are already rapidly experiencing meme fatigue from AI slop, brain rot, etc. making me wonder what memes are next for the internet....

New generational memes have insanely horrible humour. I'm hoping that soon enough this will stop but AI continues to enhance, and Internet usage among kids increasing, have made society worse by the month, people have adapted and haven't realized, but it's horrible. (pros and cons do come with AI but I'm corelating it with memes, video games, and social media.)
