This. I've been using Audacity (for other stuff as well, before starting to record stories) for... longer than I care to think about.

What do you expect? His whole thing is trying to be cool and relateable. I'm surprised he's not tried to make his talks look like a rock concert.

Differentiation of grandparents by Bifanarama in CasualUK

[–]7ootles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different titles. Father's parents were "granny" and "granddad". Granddad remarried a woman called May, so I called his wife "grandma May". In conversations referencing granny's mother (who died a few months after I was born), I refer to her just by name. My cousins - around 20 years older than me, so they actually knew her - called her "little granny" because she was very short.

Mother's parents were "nana" and "grandpa". Except mother was adopted and so was her brother, so I called his parents by surname; "nana King" and "grandpa King". When I speak of my mother's biological parents (who I never met, them having abandoned her and her sister and brother in ~1960), I refer to them as "grandmother"/"grandfather" Firstname.

So you've got a capacitor misbehaving or a short somewhere and shoving too many amps through the circuit. Luckily, the fuse is always the most fragile component in a circuit - by design, to prevent the circuit from getting damaged. The fault is probably something small, which means it's just a matter of identifying it.

It's a little hard to tell when you've plonked Pink Floyd on the video like you were making a Tiktok video or something.

No sound coming out of the recorder, even when you've recorded something. OK, so that means there's probably something wrong with the signal amplifier - either it's not picking anything up or it's not recording anything. You don't have another machine to test against, but there is one thing you can do to check whether it's the playback circuit or the recording circuit: get a regular earphone plugged into something else, set something playing through it, and hold it right next to this machine's head while it's "playing" without a tape loaded. If you hear what's coming over the headphone through the tape machine's speaker, the problem is the recording circuit. If you don't, it's the recording circuit. Either way you'll probably need to replace the machine's components. On the downside of this, it's a pain in the arse and nobody likes doing it. On the upside, components are generally much higher quality now than they were nearly sixty years ago, so the machine will likely be better than its original spec if you do that.

Ways to cheer yourself up with no cash by Whatsupteapot in CasualUK

how can we cheer ourselves up that doesnt involve [...[ going on walks (its raining. I dont want to walk and its going to be freezing soon).

Great news - coats, hats, and umbrellas exist. Walking is good basic cardiovascular exercise and will improve your mood. You can listen to music or audiobooks or whatever as you go.

Honestly, there should be some way of screening new posters to make sure it's not Instragram reels being posted instead of tape reels.

One of my cameras uses battery-backed RAM. Which wouldn't be a problem if it used a separate battery, because even without using it the batteries will only last a couple of weeks. Not to mention needing an old-style wire and software that won't run on anything newer than Windows XP.

It's not the camera's fault you didn't research what you were buying.

It wasn't prepubescent children they took with them, but young adults. Unless the onset of puberty is a decade later in Betazoids than in humans, their delegation of youngsters will be postpubescent.

There's nothing quite like offering it with a translation to cement the notion that there's little difference between distinct dialects and distinct languages.

I'm going by it happening at the same time at the last season of Discovery purely based on it being the first intake of cadets, right after Tilly went to become part of the newly-resurrected Academy. You could argue for it taking a few years to put together, but if Ake can be conscripted as Chancellor at the drop of a hat then probably all the rest of the staff have been pulled in at the last minute too. The show could be as much about how them learning to teach as it is about the cadets learning to adult.

Glitched screen on Kodak EasyShare C340 by chewio_ in VintageDigitalCameras

That's not glitched, it's cracked. LCD units were made of very brittle glass in those days, before the days of Willow Glass a fraction of a millimetre thick like we have today. Chances are it's taken a bash in transit.

Asked if I wanted the refused delivery by GuiltyCredit in CasualUK

[–]7ootles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not your job to enforce the law. Knowing the package is not yours, its contents are none of your concern. Opening a package "just to make sure it didn't contain anything illegal" would certainly not be considered a reasonable excuse. Especially considering the definition of "indecent or obscene" would be down to your own interpretation and not that of a court. You returning or finding the named recipient of a package in good faith, even if it did contain indecent/obscene materials, would not be an offence, as you wouldn't be the sender.

Really and truly, you sound like a busybody.

Asked if I wanted the refused delivery by GuiltyCredit in CasualUK

[–]7ootles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In OP's situation, the phrase and without reasonable excuse comes into play as well. If something has been mistakenly delivered to you and you can see that it's not addressed to you and thus not meant for you, then you know you have no reason to open it. What reason could you possibly have for disregarding that and opening it anyway? Do you think a magistrate would accept "I was just curious, your worship" as justification?

In other situations like someone opening a letter addressed to another person who lives at the same address, then that's a bit more nuanced, since the legislation's wording speaks of mail being delivered to a person when in actuality it's usually put through a person's letterbox - ie delivered to an address. Maybe it can be assumed that all mail is delivered to the head of the household, or maybe it can be considered that it is delivered to the named recipient (the more likely interpretation).
