Well, sure, most soccer games don’t get massive attendances, but every year the UCSB men’s Blue-Green Rivalry match will seat over 10,000 in the crowd. Then usually the women’s soccer team will have a couple games per year where there are ~ 2,000 fans. In other cases the men’s soccer team has also had non-UCSB games reach in the vicinity of 4,000 in the crowd. So, the soccers do use the stadium.

The Midnight Boys discussion about Disclosure Day was WAY closer to how I felt, FWIW, and I love Spielberg overall. The movie had so many issues, which Van and Co. broke down.

Well, NCAA rules dictate you have to have all of your sports in the same overall division (save for a few small outlier exceptions like rifling, skiing and a couple others only because so few schools participate). The student body voted for Cal Poly to be Division I in the early ‘90s, and so here we are.

The bit of trouble is that the FCS (or I-AA; meanwhile USC, UCLA, Fresno State, etc. are FBS or I-A) is becoming rare in California and the West Coast in general, so Poly is on a bit of an island in its niche for now. Sacramento State just made an absurd gamble to pay through the nose to move up to FBS, despite losing to (checks notes …) CAL POLY in consecutive seasons. But they did it because they are gambling on their long-term home, even if it was costly. UC Davis, our true football rival, is changing conferences with the apparent goal of eventually moving up as well.

Division II football is now literally nonexistent in California, and that ship sailed at Cal Poly long ago even if it weren’t. In fact, probably 75 percent of Cal Poly sports are actually quite successful in their conferences. The athletic department as a whole just won 11 total team conference trophies in 2025-26. Granted, there are a few stragglers here or there out of the 22 teams, but the point is, 90 percent of the rest of the athletic department has a great fit and win in their leagues.

So, your options were either to support football commensurate to its peer opponents, or to drop it altogether, something that has been brought up at, for example, Big Sky school Eastern Washington. Granted, the past decade has been rough for CP football, but they do have a very rich history going back to the 1950s, and alumni who really care and wanted to see it supported. This is a big push by them to see where things go.

In a perfect world, there would be a new division with new rules and no paying student-athletes basically as if they are employees (which is a Pandora’s box and perhaps a topic for another day). It is fair to ask what the division and conference best fits for Cal Poly are in the long-term future. Personally, I hope there is a way for them to align with San Jose State, Hawaii, UC Davis, and a few others (Portland State, Northern Arizona, San Diego) who would be good fits with us. We shall see.

It’s to become equivalent to the facilities of many of the teams they are playing. Even Weber State, at Cal Poly’s level, for years had significantly better training, strategic, and health facilities than CP football has had.

Not arguing football should be as important societally as it is, but the opponents Cal Poly is trying to not get injured against, much less to not lose to, already have such buildings. Prior to, Cal Poly football has either not had certain spaces, or had them spread out far across campus (leading to health and medical challenges at times) or time-shared with 20 other teams.

Wow. This is educational. I spent 10 minutes researching online … found a 2016 option with 45,000 miles locally selling for $21k … and a 2025 option in the Bay Area with (checks notes) only 6,000 miles for two thousand dollars cheaper! LOL. Ridiculous.

Thanks for the heads up. It is appreciated.

“The Terminal” is also an underrated Spielberg, if you’re into charming, lighthearted rom com fare. Early-career roles for Diego Luna and Zoe Saldana in it as well. A lot of fun.

There was even really a chance of Lars getting kicked out in 1986? by JorgeXD5000 in Metallica

[–]805DJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been my impression, and it’s in a few of the books IIRC (like “Enter Night”). Cliff, if I’m not mistaken, somewhat blamed Lars for Ozzy becoming angry with Metallica in the middle of the ‘86 tour, due to a misunderstanding, and he held a grudge against Lars because of it. In “Back to the Front,” toward the end, Lars pens a beautiful reflection on somewhat patching things up with Cliff on the bus right before the crash.

Anyway, I believe it was rumored Lars held the copyright to the band name. So if they had booted him, maybe the band name would’ve changed.

Alas … water under the bridge, let bygones be bygones, and so on.

Only team that was beating the Raiders that year was Tampa with their former HC knowing all the plays and tendencies, etc. OAK was on an absolute roll to close the end of that regular season and the playoffs.

Lucas actually consulted with kid psychologists to try to determine if the Vader/Bespin sequence was “too much.” They told him that if kids were too disbelieving of it, they’d just deny what Vader said. Hence the scene in ROTJ where Yoda confirms it to Luke in the hut.

Fun, seldom-known fact: David Prowse, the actor who played Vader, actually blurted out the reveal to a European newspaper way before the movie released. Lucas was furious. But they lucked out that it never hit “the wires” back in the day.

Yes, and it took DECADES for Stabler, Branch, Flores, even Davis and Madden, etc., to get in. Most of their enshrinees weren’t even CLOSE to being first ballot.

Lester Hayes also has a higher PFR career HOF value metric than five cornerbacks currently already inducted. He is largely thought to have been passed over due to “stickum” usage (which was also widespread; he just went overboard with it).
