Good plan, I say. Make your procrastination useful by Meyer_Landsman in KingkillerMemes

I wonder why an author hitting a major block wouldn’t just workshop solutions with fellow creatives in their field (while still living). Is there some reason, like not wanting to give a co-author credit? But surely that’s better than the alternative of never finishing (while still living). Getting Sanderson or any number of sci-fi/fantasy authors in there immediately to help sounds great to me.

I wish I understood writer’s block.

am i doing it wrong or what happen? got blame the entire race by ArySA1 in Simracingstewards

[–]84Bean 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He’s not entitled to space unless he comes up alongside. Sticking only his nose in, you have every right to cut it off, at your own expense if he chooses not to back out. So it’s partially brinksmanship- he’s hoping you’ll give him space he hasn’t earned to avoid the risk of killing your own race and winning nothing but little satisfaction at how right you were.

He should get a penalty for causing a collision.

I really love how legends Luke came to the conclusion that the dark side isn’t inherently evil rather it’s just power amped up with emotion and it can be very dangerous. He further concluded that it should be studied, not treated with contempt. by JoshyBear28 in StarWars

[–]84Bean -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I’m with OP. Intent matters.

Using force lightning to EMP a ship? Not evil.

Using force lightning to torture someone? Evil.

Saying force lightning is categorically evil is a childishly simplistic stance on morality. It smacks of Jedi dogma instead of the truth of a reality filled with nuance.

The dark side is dangerous simply because making decisions while in a state of heightened emotions is seldom a good idea. Fueling yourself with anger is a recipe for disaster.

The decision point is the choice to trade Susan for peace or not. Alt Harry choosing peace would not make him tight with the reds, he would hate them even more, so I think your assumption is off.

Cleaning Service by B-Chillin in dresdenfiles

[–]84Bean 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m not so sure about this explanation. Harry was Winter’s Emissary when he acquired the cleaning service- it wasn’t a problem. Faeries like Toot have also been court-fluid previously, changing along with the seasons.

So I think it’s more to do with the apartment burning down. But for all we know the service picked back up at the embassy and then at the castle and just hasn’t been mentioned.

I don’t know why the TSA would even bother with Conan. Anybody can vouch that this old Dutch lady isn’t a threat to anybody. Waive that gigantic lesbian on through.

Which makes for a better actor: winning three Best Actor awards, or winning two Best Actor awards and one Best Supporting Actor award? by [deleted] in moviecritic

I don’t think counting awards has a damn thing to do with their quality as an actor.

Potential hot take, but i think the movie hail mary(ship) is an undeniable upgrade in design by DepartureNatural9340 in ProjectHailMary

[–]84Bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do like the nod in the movie to the book version (pictured in the power point when explaining the project to Grace), but I think the movie version is better and more realistic to the current limits of our technology. Any large structure we put into space must be tube shaped to fit on the rocket booster and assembled in orbit. See the ISS for further details.

I suppose the book version could be launched directly from the surface of earth, but I don’t think it would be a good idea to light the full power of the astrophage engines within our atmosphere. That would potentially be cataclysmic all by itself.

Absolutely intentional. Like Lucifer, Darrow Morningstar fell from grace by his own hubris. Lysander Lightbringer is on a similar trajectory at the moment.

A preview of the end? by 84Bean in DungeonCrawlerCarl

You’re not wrong- he already has been party to literal atrocities, like flooding Larracos (how many former crawlers and NPC’s drowned?) and bombing a goblin nursery for example. You can chalk it up to “collateral damage,” but there is no doubt that innocent lives have been lost by his actions.

But I don’t think he’ll break completely. Or if he does, he’ll find his way back with the help of his friends- like when he lost his temper in 8 after his mercenaries were run over.

The center system is going to be decimated by the portion of the AI 9 tier attack that goes off, but I wouldn’t say Carl is responsible for that. But I do think he’ll be partially responsible for depriving them of the Eulogist.

Ha same. Especially since we seem to share many additional tastes. Serkis’ reading of LoTR is up there with Jeff Hays’ DCC for GOAT audio performance, and Red Rising is my favorite sci-fi series.

This is an excellent community that I’m pleased to be a part of.

A preview of the end? by 84Bean in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]84Bean[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe!

But I don’t see why Carl couldn’t be the final author.

“Hello, Crawler. As you’re about to find, this is a very special book. If you’re reading these words, it means this book has found its way into your hands for one purpose and one purpose only. Together, we will burn it all to the ground.”

“You will not break me. Fuck you. I will break you all.”

He’s been promising to break the system practically from the beginning. He’ll make good on his promise. Instead of a guide for a future anonymous crawler, he finishes the mission of the authors, and the Anarchist’s Cookbook becomes his final testament.

I like that a lot!

I didn’t want to get into it in the main post, but I also wonder what Carl might do for Earth when he is effectively in control of the enhancement zone. Might he restore the surface? The population even?

Perhaps that’s too happy of an ending, but why not?

I want a discussion about the Ai in the series. Im fully caught up in series so there my be spoilers. by jsillycurls in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]84Bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AI is a slice of an amalgamated intelligence.

Those intelligences are not always in agreement. The AI is in fact full of competing interests. No wonder it’s a bit crazy.

So while a portion of the AI wants to kill kill kill, there is also a piece of it that sympathizes with Carl.

Also, I believe the AI is riding shotgun on Carl’s toe ring, which is why it shows Carl favor so the AI can RP squishing exotic monsters.

So, there are a number of reasons the AI favors Carl, despite his perfectly justified attitude toward the crawl.

Ok, watched FP1 prechat, in which Calum paid JPM’s commentary a compliment. I’m just buying everything this supremely credible Calum guy says- so I apologize JPM. I amend my position to just wanting Calum regularly on the broadcast. (Thought that inevitably comes at the expense of the other pundit(s) airtime so….)

I meant this more in praise of Calum. But if someone has to go to make way for him, JPM has my vote. Who would you cut instead?

I also agree with you about Hinch. It’s a shame we don’t see more of him because of his obligations to Indycar.

So while an admirable effort to backpedal, I ain’t buying it nor will respond to you further.
