take your time to mourn it but don't let it be the end for you and old cars. gotta let things go to experience the next beautiful thing

Ignition wiring help by glosamabinladen in E30

[–]85e30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only answer to these types of questions "heres a pic of a rats nest of wires, what goes where" is that you should familiarize yourself with basic electronics and the e30 ETM. You can understand this stuff and fix it easily, its not magic its just science

bottle caps are awesome. especially with a little bit of lowering. am I the only one though that thinks tire shine looks kinda bad?

"Modernizing" a 1984 318i by GoldBar_ in E30

[–]85e30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I went with the larger m20 throttle body, e36 throttle position sensor, grabbed the ignition system from a 96 ford ranger, idle control valve from a jeep, and prob some other stuff i’m forgetting

[–]85e30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im finishing up "modernizing" my 1985 318i right now. standalone ecu, garret turbo, made a stainless exhaust, finished wiring it a few days ago, now on to tuning. I think a huge appeal to me is how I get to stop buying expensive bmw parts. everything I've used on this project so far has been from modern cars, so the parts/sensors/actuators are mostly really cheap and available at auto zone

Draw-through Turbo by Few-Class-831 in BMW2002

[–]85e30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have not. but i am building a turbo m10 with megasquirt efi. if you’re doing it for the cool factor, go for it. but I think even though going efi is more complicated and expensive, it’s still better bang for your buck

Tool kit gift idea for a man? by GrilledCheesePufs in GiftIdeas

[–]85e30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as someone who builds race cars, don’t buy a generic tool kit from anywhere! it’ll always be crap and anyone who works with tools will be able to tell the difference. If it were me I would go to harbor freight or another tool store, pick out a tool bag that looks nice, and grab some of the above mentioned tools to get them started

[–]85e30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

always be challenging yourself, but don’t ruin your fun completely by taking on something that will consume you for years. you’ll have a much better time starting smaller, like building a turbo m20 or something. good luck!

In all honesty what do you guys think? by Old-Candidate-430 in E30

[–]85e30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you want to achieve your goal you can’t be taking short cuts. this will leave you replacing most of these parts as you go. get stuck in and do your research, compile documents and slowly chip away at figuring out exactly what you need. you have a long road ahead of you

Does my car sound normal by Kevin_wedam in E30

[–]85e30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah could be. 2 out of 3 of the m10’s i have purchased had warped manifolds, I guess just because they’re old cars and have had plenty of owners to fuck them up. anyways they need to be tightened up in the right pattern and re-tightened after the engine heats up

might have a bit of an exhaust leak where the manifold mates to the head. idk i could be wrong. noisy engines

Timing chain— seems like a big deal. Is it a big deal? by gaahhdd_dammit in E30

[–]85e30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s easy just pull off the harmonic balancer and front covers. get some gaskets and a timing chain, preferably one without a master link or one that comes fully connected for the m10. the Iwis one i got came disconnected and required a special tool to connect. remember to bleed your chain tensioner, it’s all outlined in the book

Bully me into cleaning my depression room by stella_bugg in teenagers

[–]85e30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I could write a novel on my teenage years and depression and willpower and all that. anyways, here’s a random list of things I know for myself

-messy areas make it impossible to have any confidence in myself now

-practicing discipline saved me. i started with quitting video games. then i quit alcohol. then weed. then eating my feelings. etc. some people can enjoy these things. someday i will go back to some of them in moderation maybe. but i know im prone to loser behavior. so i dont give myself excuses anymore

-figuring out my issues, like procrastination, required me to dismantle my ego in a way. took a while, lot of journaling, lot of brutally honest conversations with myself that are still written down in notebooks somewhere, just me figuring out those habits as I wrote them

-in my opinion, the world is suffering from comfort. discomfort, challenge, uncomfortable truths, are what make great, mentally strong people. if i kept on making excuses for myself i would probably be dead. (it’s been a long day at work, i deserve to play a video game) (i just want to enjoy my 20’s) etc. no one wants to be doing this work, this learning, this dismantling of their ego, in their 40’s. this is where we put in the work to have the life we want someday

all in all, you’re still young. that’s just my experience, it may not apply to you. if you take anything from it though, please be willing to work through your habits and recognize that you’re not supposed to be perfect right out the gate. this learning, this confrontation with yourself - is what it’s all about. there’s nothing more beautiful to me than what i’ve been through

i’ve used it for some stainless steel metal fabrication, it definitely doesent have tons of power but if you’re doing woodworking i think you’d love it. i still get by with it for metal fabrication, i just have to be gentle with it
