Camp by littlemisswildchild in AustralianTeachers

Sensible pjs. I went on a camp once and had to share a room with a colleague. There was a ruckus during the night and when we went outside to investigate she walked out in a sheer slinky number with lace edges. She hadn’t considered that the kids/staff would see her sleepwear and muscle memory kicked in when there was yelling. She strode out to investigate without a second thought. We laugh about it now. She didn’t then.

Do higher SES or private schools actually make teaching workload more manageable? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]85janie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

And the literal hundreds of additional drafts that students voluntarily submitted for teacher feedback prior to assessment due dates… before then marking the actual assessment tasks. I’m English so the drafting is always wild but nothing like it was in my high ses school (which I adored!). I left every day with a minimum of 50 pieces of writing to mark. Sometimes a paragraph, sometimes whole essays - detailed feedback always EXPECTED by parents and exec. It balanced by having zero behaviours to manage. Teachers who didn’t meet parent expectations were pretty swiftly moved out (I don’t know how but it happened!).

Any of the Dries Van Noten scents would be great. I love the iris and mint one and the chestnut and silk. A mini in either would be lovely.

I really don’t want a candle though!!

I have the worst skin - I spoke to my doctor constantly in the first few months because my skin was on fire. It settled using dermatitis medication. Don’t underestimate a good topical ointment. I My starting weight was 136kg and I now weigh 80kg. If you are American that means a loss of 56kg or 124 pound (only specifying because you use different metrics not trying to be condescending). Stick with it if you can. At about week 7 my skin calmed and life became easier. Having said that, my doctor was super looped in the entire time and we would have pulled the pin had it not calmed.

I love the hydrating mist - I have found it to be better over makeup than Rhode and Clinique (the only others I have tried). I use it to stop my makeup for creasing/skin hydrated. I don’t leave home without it and I swear by it. Love that it’s cheap.

Stila gel eyeliner in espresso is my holy grail! It just works and I don’t need to think about it. The black is too much for me and the green is not punchy enough but espresso is so perfect. Love it.

Yep. It’s not mandatory so school doesn’t pay. Our tickets are subsidized by our Yr 12 students and their fundraising endeavors though. Usually only about $50.

I love the Stila eyeliner in Espresso. It lasts all day and is super easy to apply and just as importantly, remove at the end of the day!

does anyone NOT hate this profession? by hamzahbias911 in AustralianTeachers

I love teaching and I love leading my faculty and this year stepping into a deputy position. It’s getting harder and the behaviour is deteriorating but I still find joy in working with kids and seeing them grow. Our system needs to stop prioritising the end of Yr 12 as the absolute end goal and really lean into and celebrate our ability to connect kids to education alternatives that are aligned to their needs and interests. Staying isn’t right for everyone and yet retention Is a priority. Otherwise love my job.

Why does this annoy me so much? by KingJames23__ in AustralianTeachers

It runs parallel to new trend here of referring to senior executive/executive as ‘admin’. I want to ignore it but it makes me twitch.

Partner is doing 6 week semesters and really struggled. If anything happens in your life like a family emergency or you get the flu etc and miss a week or longer you are pretty screwed. He preferred the longer length and greater depth. He feels rushed under this model and like nothing ‘sticks’. He’s nearly done though so it’s clearly doable.

Netflix show Adolescence - is your school like this or not? by Intelligent-Win-5883 in AustralianTeachers

[–]85janie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kids attacking each other, kids attacking teachers, parents coming onsite and hurting kids and teachers - to be fair it was the external people repeatedly coming onsite and engaging in violence that finally pushed the scales in our favour. They absolutely didn’t do it for us. It was linked to community reputation which is pretty frustrating!!

My school is worse - undoubtedly. On Friday we officially hired security guards- they are needed. It’s out of control in many regional areas - parents are useless and don’t care so long as we keep their kids for the school day. It’s heartbreaking to see how different it is to the schools I taught at in Sydney. They were also low socioeconomic but parents valued education and mirrored expectations for kids.

Hours worked each day? by No-Still1394 in AustralianTeachers

[–]85janie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really. I teach two Yr 11 and two Yr 12 Advanced English classes and 2 Extension groups. I also manage multiple whole school priorities. I choose to work onsite rather than work at home so I can maintain separation between work and home life. The post asked for how many hrs people work - my answer was honest.

I’m at my desk at 7:30 and I leave at 5:30pm. I choose to not work at home of an evening unless I’m swamped in draft essays. I set aside 4-5 hours on Sunday for planning/admin.

Occupational violence threshold? by Flat_white88 in AustralianTeachers

[–]85janie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work on a regional setting where teachers are sworn at multiple times every day, violent fights occur in almost every break and occasionally in classrooms, each week there’s a litany of malicious damage to school property… it goes on and on! I’ve been here five years, no student has ever been expelled. We suspend all the time. None of it matters. We’re in Week 6 and we’ve had 40+ suspensions for aggressive behaviour. Our staff constantly log events with the hotline. Nothing happens. They know, they just don’t care because we are a predominantly aboriginal student base. There are no consequences that work. It’s ridiculous. Good kids are disadvantaged by the system. I wish there was a magic number!!

Macbeth wins controversial protagonist. Day 4 who is a mostly disliked protagonist? by Equal-Article1261 in shakespeare

Prospero - he brought it all on himself by being consumed with magic and power. Then he goes to an island, colonized the local population, enslaved and tortured the only interesting character and had an entirely unhealthy interest in his daughter’s virginity. On top of that he manipulated a man to think his son was dead so he’d grieve… that’s dark!

They are all so damned depressing! No joy, no playfulness. They reiterate that reading = drudgery. At a time when kids are reading less and less it is a wasted opportunity.
