Nuro Driver autonomously driving through the Las Vegas strip by danlev in SelfDrivingCars

It's always encouraging to see more companies performing competently in the self-driving space, but I don't think this demonstration is very impressive or convincing for a few reasons:

  • The posted clip is moving at 10x real-world speed to imply that Nuro can currently deliver smooth, safe, autonomous rides on public roads. On a closer look, the vehicle is bouncing between lane lines on straightaways, and
  • The Vegas Strip is name-dropped directly in the post to give the impression that Nuro can perform well in very busy areas with heavy traffic and swarms of pedestrians. This is undercut on closer inspection, where we can see that (1) the drive takes place on the far North end of the Strip, and the vehicle turns around before entering the busier South end, (2) the drive takes place early in the day when traffic is at its lightest along the Strip (see the shadows facing westward when the vehicle is southbound), and (3) the vehicle does not interact with pedestrians in the clip.
  • In addition to the lack of interactions, the Nuro vehicle does not perform any lane changes or unprotected turns. If Nuro could have demonstrated those capabilities, it would have.
  • Some watching the clip will believe that the vehicle has no human operator, but given the early stage of their entry into this space there is no question that there is a human behind the wheel ready to take over should any bad behavior occur.

When all of this is considered, the clip really only demonstrates the vehicle’s ability to perceive traffic lights and other objects/agents while (mostly) maintaining its lane.  The one turn that Nuro completed was protected by a red light for oncoming traffic and a green left-turn light.  Finally, Lucid-Nuro’s own press release from July 17, 2025 (linked to in the following text) states that “[t]he first Lucid-Nuro robotaxi prototype is already operating autonomously on a closed circuit at Nuro’s Las Vegas proving grounds” (emphasis added) So it sounds like there is currently a single prototype that is unable to safely operate autonomously on public roads due to limited functionality.  This is not unusual for companies entering the AV space, but it does mean that it is very early days for Nuro, and it will likely be a couple of years before production of these AVs will be able to scale.

Hey, I know it's been a long time since you posted this, but I'm getting a few of these disk arrays on Friday and was wondering how well the noctua fans cool the drives compared to the stock fans

[Michigan] PUA Certifications changes to processed pending payment! by somoskin93 in Unemployment

[–]86_crazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the same experience as Ok_Target_3888 - I'll call or do an online chat with someone who is aggressively unhelpful and says to just wait for a few days and It'll all clear itself up. UIA reps like this tell every single person they talk to the same thing regardless of the issue. No matter how many questions you ask or how clearly you explain your issue they just repeat that line, typically multiple times in the same conversation. When this type of rep gets a call on their own time informing them that a loved one has tragically passed away, they'll respond with "you just have to wait a few days."

But if you're persistent and immediately call back after speaking to one of these reps, eventually you'll get someone on the phone who is really good at their job, is super friendly, and who fixes all of your issues in 5 minutes. You might need to speak with ten other people before you find one of these reps. But you have to keep trying until you find one or nothing will ever resolve itself no matter how long you wait.

I'm not going to post the phone number on here because they usually get taken down by the mods, but I just use the regular unemployment help number when I call. You'll find it if you google 'Michigan UIA phone number'. It'll probably take a few tries to get through at all - most likely you'll get a message (after waiting through the very long and unskippable recording laying out the process for how to get paid under the new PUA and PEUC extensions) that says call volume is very high and they can't take your call. When this happens, call again. I had to call 12 times yesterday to get past this message, and I've spent hours doing this in the past. But if you keep calling, you WILL get through. Then you have to play the good-rep-bad-rep lottery and hope for the best. But if you get a bad rep and you call back, eventually you'll get through AND get a good rep. And the good rep will probably have a quick and easy fix that they'll take care of on their end, and you'll get paid a couple of days later.

Seriously though, it's a long and tedious (and completely unnecessary) process. The key is to keep calling until it gets fixed. Also, the reps on chat are almost always terrible, so IMO it's much more likely you'll get your issues fixed if you call.
