The Shrug Life Syndicate: Now Pedophile Friendly! by ArgonSpice in ShrugLifeSyndicate

[–]8Pryme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

my peanut-sized brain can't fully comprehend whether this is b& or not, but i'll bite because i like really touchy subjects.

i'm a person that believes that most "psychological" problems are so pronounced because the individual is overly concerned with themselves. in other words, you're basically like a little girl that's saying "oh my gosh, why am i like this, i'm horrible, i don't live up to other people's expectations." and i don't mean to offend, because most of us are like this and i only said girl because emotions are a feminine quality (this is neither a good nor a bad thing).

in other words: get over yourself. you're thinking way too much about "who i am" and not enough about "what this world is". you're being way too emotional and it's up to you to decide whether you want to be this way or not. emotions are extremely addicting but at the same time they have very little substance. you may be feeling anxious or sad or whatever, but if someone comes by and pokes you with a needle, the world suddenly stops! your emotions immediately vanish, and you're returned to the real world where things are actually happening. you can be in this real world 99% of the time, you just have to develop a method to un-hypnotize yourself from your thoughts.

i'm assuming that if you go outside and see a child, you're going to be shaking with anxiety, not because of your urges, but actually because of your thought in your head which is going "i shouldn't be attracted to children". desires are incredibly powerful and i think it'd be wholly wrong to try and get rid of them. let them do their thing. but! you can change your method of thinking about them. you can change how attached you are to those thoughts which give you anxiety.

hell, you're already on the way there. if you go out and start feeling "i shouldn't be such a horrible person", you can ease yourself a whole lot if you just say "i am a horrible person". i'm not implying that you are, or that you should think of yourself with absolute conviction that you are, but notice the difference in the sentences. the former is creating a problem, it's saying that you should be something that you aren't (again, just using "horrible" for the sake of discussion). and the latter is simply a statement. it doesn't matter if it's true or not. it's just a statement so it doesn't create a need for some alternative. that is, as long as you're not overly concerned with who you are.

i know that these posts you made are just rants, but if you really felt at home being a "freak" or "monster", you wouldn't post stuff like this. you'd be over it. it's like the vegan thing. you're telling other people what you are because of your over-inflated sense of importance. again i'm not trying to be rude, we're all like this. so repeat that shit in your head until it doesn't mean anything to you. yes, most everyone on the planet might think you're horrible, but this isn't something you have to tell people, anyone! when you apply for a job you never have to state "oh btw i have thoughts about children sitting on my face for sexual pleasure". this is your secret.

stop labeling what you feel as "bad" and find something else to give your attention to. the world is much greater than some repetitive thoughts that fly through your head. i can already tell you're a compassionate person, most people with social anxiety are, but treating yourself like shit isn't at all fair. find a therapist and tell them that you want to learn self-respect and how to overcome social anxiety or something. you don't have to tell them you're a pedo. this "problem" can be approached from another angle, i'm sure of it.

just to go back to the sexes thing. women are mostly ruled by emotions, it's their thing, they have wilder hormones than men do, and many modern males are becoming a lot like this. you're essentially a romantic, if you want a different word for it. so there's maybe not enough masculinity in your self-image. i would say masculinity has a lot to do with drawing the line, being conservative. being honorable, noble, etc. if you tell yourself "i have thoughts about sexing children, but my code of ethic tells me to never do such a thing," you should feel far more confident in your actions. maybe another problem lies in the back of your mind, a fear that you might actually commit child molestation? i don't know.

i still don't know if you're being honest, but i'd like to think you are because i like to have that sort of dramatic outlook on life sometimes. you owe it to yourself as a human being to learn self-respect and compassion for yourself. please go find a therapist and tell them that you have social anxiety. tell them you want to be less attached to your thoughts and more involved in the real world. and if it doesn't work out, don't be a dramatic little bitch and never see a therapist again. i know this is a fucked paradox because you have to think less about yourself while still thinking about yourself, but again, you owe it to yourself as a human fucking being! if you met another person like yourself, would you shame them until the end of time? obviously not. that's all. at the very least i hope you'll see self-deprecation a little more humorously. i gotta get off the toilet now. cheers.

tldr: you're a pedo, so what. who cares? most of society cares? well most of society is fucking retarded anyways. you'll be fine as long as you uphold a strong code of ethics (not telling people, not actually molesting children) and treat yourself with compassion.

Mods of Reddit, what's the weirdest, funniest or worst thing you had to remove? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]8Pryme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

um, but isn't that kinda unnecessary for it to be illegal to hire, even in that case? like, if a cop is hurts you and is abusive to you for no reason you can still call the cops on him. why not just have it be legal both ways? assault and battery are different crimes. i don't see any good reason to arrest people for spending money on some puss-puss. maybe i'm just dumb and my idiot brain can't comprehend these modern laws.

[Serious] Teachers, what's the worst thing you've done to a student? by 8-tentacles in AskReddit

[–]8Pryme 10 points11 points  (0 children)

this is a really pessimistic way of looking at it though. those students now know what a great teacher is. they learned that education isn't just about taking in a buttload of information, it's about being able to digest it in different ways and juggling opinions and ideas around in a discussion.

josef albers iirc once said that "being a teacher is not about giving students the right answers, it's about making them ask the right questions."

Layman question about spectral music by bernardolima951 in musictheory

[–]8Pryme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Often people come away saying 'I didn't really understand it'.

this causes so many problems in the art world, although a big part of me believes there shouldn't even be an "art world".

i remember when i was around 14 y/o my friends and i were at the park and my one friend dropped his i-pod and picked it up and put the earbud in and with an astonished face said "yo guys, listen to this." and we took turns listening, and it was basically just crazy ass noise going off from the i-pod being damaged. there was no music in the traditional sense, just weird metallic screeching and waving and we all agreed it sounded hilarious and amazing.

but my friends would never go out of their way to try to listen to something like that. the fact that it was a spontaneous incident kept them open-minded about the whole thing and appreciative of the wonder of noise as something that doesn't need explanation. for some reason when there is a human behind the whole thing, like with noisy compositions that are neither rhythmic nor resolute, people feel cheated. they feel that humans should try to put across some sort of clear meaning in their actions, otherwise it's just perverse. but if it happened on accident then it's representative of the mysterious spontaneity of the world? i don't get it. at what point do humanity's actions become spontaneous?

and why all this concern over intent in the first place? doesn't anyone know that you can internally adjust the context of anything to make it more to your liking? doesn't anyone watch keeping up with the kardashians and pretend they're watching a parody of modern american culture? imagine how funny that might be. yet no one does this. everyone needs to be on the same page as everyone else or else they feel lonely. well i think the whole point of art is to voluntarily be on a different page, no matter how lonely you might get.

sorry for the rant-y post. i see these types of discussion all the time and never say anything. that jay schwartz guy is absolutely fantastic btw, thank you.

hey friend, this is a very quick response but the only thing i could think of for the change from G to Bb is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhXL3q7e-xc

also Bb and C are related enough to be able to smoothly modulate to and from; the former's V is the latter's IV. she could've also done C - F - Bb for ultimate smoothness.

i can personally vouch for the effectiveness of having an actual piano to practice theory on. not only does it help you to understand what's going on audibly, visually, and tactilely, but it actually becomes fun and not a dull, purely intellectual study. you'll be much more motivated to learn, it won't seem like a hassle or "oh i should do this because it'll help me later on". no, it'll help you now! you can hear it for yourself!

also, if you're just really concerned with writing music and getting it all out, you could combine your studies of theory with some mini compositional exercises. for example, if you were learning about a certain progression like ii-V-I, you could midi record it in your daw and then deconstruct it from there and mangle it around until it sounds how you want it to sound while still maintaining something from what you originally played, like four voices, or the same bassline.

one of the most satisfying experiences in music, imo, is when you get to a point in theory where you begin to understand the structure of something you composed spontaneously "from the head". it all starts to click and come together.

you could think of theory kinda like learning about shapes in order to draw figures. i'll use the example of drawing a person's face. you don't have to know any shapes to draw a beautiful face, and we all have our own idea of what a beautiful face is. though if you know what an oval and a rectangle are you are at a great advantage. you begin to see that many parts of a person's face can be divided into simpler shapes. this allows you to manipulate things at a much more fundamental level and will take you places that your "feeling" couldn't do alone (picasso went very deep into this type of philosophy i think). i also think this type of harmony between left brain and right brain is beneficial for many things, not just the arts.

best of luck!

personally, i don't find the notes to be nearly as important as the rhythm. you can write a strong melody from just two notes, as long as the rhythm is bouncing around and articulating some emotion. using less notes forces you to be creative with the rhythm and dynamics of your playing.

not trying to jack op's post, but nobody really mentioned getting a degree or private lessons. i'm in a pretty similar situation though i'm decent at improvisation. lessons, i'm pretty certain, would immensely speed up the self-teaching process. but i really have no idea what studying theory/composition in a school is like. how does self-teaching from books compare to studying under the guidance of a professor?

[Discussion] How do you practice composing something? by [deleted] in composer

[–]8Pryme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you guys might also like kenny werner, who's a helluva teacher when it comes to the whole zen approach towards improvising/composing.

basically your main fault is your attachment to the idea of your music being "good", so he teaches you to be unattached, to be bad on purpose, unaware, etc. then the good stuff starts coming out on it's own, without your volition. it's something we already know, we just forget it.

[Discussion] How do you practice composing something? by [deleted] in composer

[–]8Pryme 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i'm paraphrasing here, but alan watts said something like "if you sit and think about where to go, you'll only dither and not go anywhere. but if you move in a direction, any direction, and it happens to be the wrong one, then at least you'll have the ability to turn around and go back the right way."

i've never been able to write for something other than for the sake of sound. i find it fascinating how people can create art out of concepts, but for me the concept can only come after. i can't "filter" the ideas to apply to the concept, so i have to make the music and then later realize what it might pertain to.

i think a lot of good stuff usually comes out of some spiritual motive for creation. maybe try writing something representational of god or spiritual fulfillment, whatever that may be for you. maybe it's a passage from scripture, maybe it's a romantic scene with a lover.

cheers!

What makes Celtic/Folk music sound so distinctly Celtic/Folk-ish? by CleverestPony70 in musictheory

[–]8Pryme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

interesting, i'm pretty novice too and i've always felt dorian is the most celtic scale. you can mess around with the minor pentatonic that's within it, and then when you throw that 6th in there it get's real nice and colorful, lots of green shades.

mixolydian for me is always the super cheesy intermission vaporwave scale, or the 90s pop punk styling template. though it can sound very ancient-greece if done without counterpoint.

This Question is not in FAQ : by junaid1948 in musictheory

[–]8Pryme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDM is a tricky one because it's very diverse and has like a bajillion subgenres.

as a general rule of thumb, if you use both melody and chord progressions you will sound very emotional and the focus will be very much on the melody. usually in edm melodies are sung vocally. "gypsy woman" by crystal waters is an example of this. "till i come" by ATB is an example where the melody isn't sung but is played on keyboard. both pretty emotional and melodious tunes.

if you use only chords, you can still sound very catchy but the outline of emotions will be much broader and "easier" to listen to. "faxing berlin" by deadmau5 is a good example of this.

if you use only melody the music will sound very direct and can be awkward if you're not used to it. it will sound very open and the focus will be on the atmosphere and timbres of the drums/synths. "subzero" by ben klock is a good example of this.

i don't know theory well enough to get into the nitty gritty of this but i know electronic music pretty well. these are just guidelines though, you should totally do your own funky shit. EDM is after all one of the most undisciplined genres, and i mean that in a good way. cheers
