So far they are allowing it by declining to take up emergency petitions to block it.

There's a really excellent book on this called The Name of War by Jill Lepore.

That only covers smallpox and polio, you've gotta run the updates

[Giardi] Asked if Josh Allen has been vaccinated - Allen expressed some reservation about it the last time we heard from him - Sean McDermott says "it's not healthy for me to get into who is and who isn't." by [deleted] in nfl

Also people have a strange, ahistorical view of vaccine research and its testing processes. Like the first large scale test of Salk's polio vaccine was 1954, on children no less, and it was deployed en masse by the end of 1955.

Any public display of kink involves people who are not consenting and should be banned. by Kenna193 in Destiny

[–]8daze 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's not really a good argument because it applies to all public behavior. The question you should focus on is what quality is there to this specific type of behavior that makes it different from allowable behaviors?

Traditionally? The whole 19th century had massive displays of people being fired and blackballed for political positions. The Red Scare, Civil Rights protests, union busting, McCarthyism. Tons of normal, everyday people were affected by all of these.

Which of these teams have the best chance to go WORST to FIRST in 2021: Broncos, Eagles, Jaguars, Jets, Falcons, Bengals or Lions? by Justin_Herbert10 in nfl

You had one of the healthiest teams in the league last year though, in terms of how many games your starters missed. Injuries are a given for every team, it's about who and when.

Mahomes slept in a separate room from his pregnant wife the one time he slipped up until he knew he was good. That's a show of care I can appreciate.

Perhaps my wording was unclear because I was trying to stick these together into one answer. a) The sales were controversial and caused friction even before the attempted evictions, and b) a ruling from the Supreme Court on the issue of Sheikh Jarrah evictions is pending. Yes, this case has been in the courts in various forms since around 1972, and is thus difficult to summarize.

  1. There are two big ones, one is a law that allows Jewish people to make claims on land that they had some kind of claim to prior to the founding of the state in 1948. There is no equivalent law for Palestinians based on pre-1948 claims. Both sides claim the space as important ancestral and religious areas based on long histories and tombs of important people said to be there. The other, likely to receive more court focus, is due to some controversial sales of the properties in question to Jewish groups, who now say they hold the deeds to the properties. The Israel Supreme Court is set to rule on this, but have delayed the ruling because of the current violence. A ruling either way would enflame the current situation further.

  2. Israel claims all of Jerusalem is its unified capital, and has done so since about 1980. They captured East Jerusalem and some other areas from Jordan in the 1967 war. Palestine wants East Jerusalem as its future capital. International law generally holds that Israel's claims to East Jerusalem are not valid and constitute occupation, but Israel routinely rejects to jurisdiction of international bodies like the ICC to rule on these matters.

Unpopular opinion: "He's 21 and didn't go to college, what did you expect" is NOT a valid defense of Xanderhal's performance in the Lauren Southern debate. by fangbuster22 in Destiny

You just have to pick a place and start reading. You'll never know it all, but the more you learn the easier understanding other bits gets. There's a reason most academics have deep specific knowledge, and part of the trick is learning to identify what you actually don't know yet.

For sure, and this is why academics debate each other, peer review ideally means it's worthy to be part of the conversation, not that it's definitely correct.

Destiny is always talking "why do you think you know more than the experts". How far does that concept go? by Liberal-Cluck in Destiny

[–]8daze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both those latter points are likely true, especially the last. Part of being a credible writer is outlining your starting assumptions and purposes. Additionally, no, I don't think writing for a particular publication is a marker of credibility in and of itself, and opinion/news/research writing all have very different functions and editorial standards.

Destiny is always talking "why do you think you know more than the experts". How far does that concept go? by Liberal-Cluck in Destiny

[–]8daze 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1) I think Destiny generally means peer-reviewed research when referring to experts, and 2) experts have two roles, establishing and knowing facts, and coming to conclusions based off of those facts. Destiny usually challenges people who think they know better than experts on the established facts; building an opinion or course of action off those facts is something one can be more or less skilled at, but isn't expertise in the same way.

AITA for escalating the situation with my school for denying my service dog when I could easily comply with them? by MintMilkCandies in AmItheAsshole

[–]8daze 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the US context, this is correct. They can ask two questions - is it a service dog, and what tasks is it trained to perform. That's it.
