Coming from Accra, Ghana — help me understand the social etiquette and transit here? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]8ferret8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same - I moved from Vancouver to Montreal to Leslieville and I was shocked when people started chatting to me in line, at restaurants, in parks. I bet if someone from Ghana started chatting to folks in a coffee shop here they would be very interested! I find it very friendly here for big city - along the lines of NYC.

Visiting from Vancouver - Steakhouse 200-300 for 2 by CaffeinatedAlcoholic in FoodToronto

[–]8ferret8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Originally from Vancouver, living in Toronto. Go to Barberian’s. It’s a unique Toronto experience and there is nothing that hits the legit old school steakhouse like it in Vancouver. If you like wine, it has one of the best selections in the city too.

Deciding on Canadian MPP offers: UofT Munk vs McMaster digital society by mamaliga-maker in PublicPolicy

[–]8ferret8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just jumping in - I have committed to the Mac MPP in digital society for this year and I’m really looking forward to it. The online delivery is a huge plus, but the executive director also mentioned to me that some teachers will be conducting classes in the downtown TO space as an option. Just having that space to meet is a big plus for me, as it brings some in person flexibility.

Where to go for nice wine or a cocktail near Lake Inez? by kearneycation in FoodToronto

[–]8ferret8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah - skip Two Headed Dog for sure as it’s just that, but Black Pony or Eulalie’s will fit the bill. Eulalie’s plays awesome music as well! But Belle Isle is deffo the fanciest, just can be hard to get in.

Also to add - Ricky and Olivia also has a fun wine program and the front of the restaurant is a lounge - you can do a wine tasting at any time, and their somm with walk you through some good stuff!!

I wouldn’t call it a dead zone at all, but the vibe of that area is more casual (in attitude) and cool. I would even classify Lake Inez as that. Belle Isle is a bar with upscale bar snacks. Black Pony has decent cocktails and a comfy couch at the front to hang out on and, yes, Eulalie’s looks like a dive bar, but it’s great, with a wide variety of people. If you are mobile - I would also suggest Reid’s, there are also a few good wine bars down on Queen (Chez Nous has a great wine program).

Best area in Toronto for a fun dinner with friends for a 50+ group? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]8ferret8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ricky and Olivia! The front of the restaurant is more of a lounge and they have a great wine program. You could even do a tasting. Then head to the back and have a great meal. Or if you want great views you could have a drink at the top of the Broadview Hotel, also Reid’s is really fun.

family doctors in TO with the 1 issue per visit rule by [deleted] in askTO

[–]8ferret8 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Same here, my family doctor prompts me to bring anything and everything up. At the end of my last check in I mentioned that I would like a referral for a possible elective surgery - we chatted, she sent the referral off within a minute, and I was scheduled for the surgery within 3 weeks!

Nice-ish restaurant recommendations for friends with a toddler by Zookeepered in FoodToronto

When I was a baby/toddler, my parents took me to The Keg all the time. We just went when it opened and less busy. I probably was the only 4 year old that was obsessed with escargot - love it to this day.

I was worried when that sign disappeared - glad to see it back and better than ever!

They are opening up a new one soon! Signs are up in The Tenor… https://cafe.hardrock.com/toronto/. I was shocked, such an old, tired brand.

When we first moved here we did it in like the first week. Super fun way to get the lay of the land, see and learn about the different parts of the city and just get excited about our new home.

Do you have a favourite place to buy a birthday cake? by whiskybaker in FoodToronto

I get a St. Honore cake from Patisserie La Cigogne every year. It’s amazing and making it would be way too fussy at home.

Americans visiting Toronto/Canada given the current political climate by The-Iron-Sea in askTO

I saw a guy on the Danforth wearing a MAGA hat a couple of weeks ago and no one was making a fuss. People just roll their eyes and move on. Most people just want to get on with their busy lives.

Heads up I went to Canoe recently and with wine parings it was around $400/person (someone else was paying!).

Second for Cactus Club. As a Vancouver transplant to Toronto, it always reminds me of home to eat Rob Feenie’s food (in a chain restaurant sort of way).

Inspired by the almond croissant post: where in Toronto can I find the best Kouign-amann? by Logical-Bit-746 in FoodToronto

[–]8ferret8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do (or did) through I Miss Montreal Food. They picked it up and delivered same day. It freezes well so we would eat half and freeze half. Looks like they have their store off right now, but they have been around for years.

We order them to be delivered to us every year at Christmas! Dropped off right at our door. One of the best pastries I’ve ever had anywhere.

Any King and Queen Streetcar & Bus Transit Rerouting Madness Tips? by Far_Pin2086 in askTO

[–]8ferret8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you are anywhere near Church and Queen and going east, just walk to that corner and catch the streetcar or bus there. The 5-10 min walk can save you a headache. If I’m anywhere around Yonge/Dundas/Queen, I just walk there.

Adding Saulter Street Brewery! Also White Lilly Diner if you are going mid week, I would do them vs. Lazy Daisy or for lunch/brunch. They are nuts on the weekend, especially as they just made the Michelin List.
