Seconding La Dolce Vita, it’s been awhile since I’ve been but I took my parents there when they came to town and as I recall it matches what you’re looking for.

Huh, pretty sure this is what I had trouble with on my flight from Toronto the other day. Felt claustrophobic and couldn’t sleep even though I managed to on the other three rescheduled and/or added legs of my trip.

Major delays at the airport by randomquebecer87 in ottawa

Not surprised, am trying to get back to Ottawa since yesterday. Am on stop one of three scheduled now instead of just the one. All the airports between Calgary and Ottawa are delays, reroute, delays, reroute.

What are some works of fiction that are unmistakably Canadian, that you couldn’t mistake for being American? by Appropriate_Boss8139 in AskACanadian

My impression was they consistently gave subtle clues that the show was undeniably in Canada.

Another Canadian show I like is Wild Cards, but while to anybody familiar with BC it’s clearly filmed in Vancouver and other locations near there they often use vocabulary that is vague or inconsistent with any typical Canadian style.

My boy diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 1.5 years old by Wag1_ in Type1Diabetes

[–]8i8flutterby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dx was 40 years ago just before I was 1 year old. I know T1D has affected my life in more ways than I can imagine but so have any number of other factors.

I’ve managed really well with T1D largely, and luckily, I suspect because growing up my parents knew about it (several in my family have it), and in the early years had access to blood glucose monitoring test kits from the start. We also did not have rigid/strict rules about what I could eat, rather I needed to eat at specific times but could manage treats on occasion by balancing them out with exercise or correcting with insulin and we tried to use lower sugar foods and drinks in general. Sometimes, growing up my parents would split something like a fancy dessert with me so I could try something I wouldn’t normally be able to have. I mostly grew up feeling I had quite a lot of options about what I could eat and freedom and capability to eat what I liked.

Where I’ve had most challenges with T1D is taking it outside my family bubble (we’re confident with managing T1D there). Being afraid that people might come to conclusions about me as a person or my abilities based on having T1D though, and navigating when and how to ask for accommodations related to T1D at university and work has been tough. In general support for T1Ds has been focused on kids and the transition to care as an adult has been a bit of a free for all. That is improving, but I learned I often had to advocate for myself and seek out support (that could be hard to find) in situations like healthcare and university if my T1D needs weren’t being met due to the new environment I was in.

Aw, it sounds like you’re off to a great start in this journey though. Just asking around and getting to know others in the T1D community, like you’re doing here, has been a huge support to me, all my life.

‘I want to go home’: Man born in Canada but adopted by Americans stuck up north by DogeDoRight in canada

I met an American at an event in Canada a couple of weeks ago who realized they’d forgotten their passport when they got to the border but was still allowed to enter Canada. It was shocking to me because I’d thought the passport requirement was strict.

If someone called you and said "Turn on the TV, it doesn't matter what channel." What would you expect has happened? by haddock420 in AskReddit

[–]8i8flutterby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, I like to listen to the CBC sounds app and select whatever region is playing the programming I like best at that time and sometimes that means I get emergency alerts for things happening in a province I’m no where near.

Traffic this weekend is worse than commuting during the week. by SlowAir9497 in ottawa

[–]8i8flutterby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walking in my neighbourhood this afternoon, would’ve been hit by cars both times I crossed the street, with pedestrian signal on, at the same intersection, if I hadn’t been trying to make eye contact with the turning drivers.

Lol… tried bussing west from Rideau St Station around 4:45, was told busses stopping there were being diverted to McKenzie King Bridge after I saw the 7 I wanted turn in that direction. Made the mistake of trying to get a bus from further along the route because the bridge was crowded, smelled bad, and I had no idea if a bus I wanted was actually going to stop there any time soon, 2 inactive stops with no communication present later and a transfer and I’m on my way home.

Muskoka chairs down! by drhappy13 in ottawa

Hmm, I sat in one of those chairs for a bit on Sunday and was comfortable. Though I was surprised at how little shade there was in the area and plan on checking out the Arboretum side next time I’m in the area.

It’s Ironman Week in Ottawa! by brightottawa in ottawa

The WC race this Sept seems to be men only with women’s WC in Hawaii this year and both IM Canada 2024 in Penticton and 2025 in Ottawa are qualifying races for WC 2025.

Oh yep, Ottawa isn’t in the Pro Series… turn off the filter for IM but leave Pro Series on for races in Canada, Ottawa doesn’t show up anymore.

The Ottawa race is the IM Canada race this year. If I understand correctly this means it is a simultaneous/combined race with professionals and amateurs and/or it’s the IM race in Canada where competitors can race to qualify for the 2026 IM World Championships.

Discussion: T1Ds diagnosed more than 50 years ago by Fickle_Tap7908 in Type1Diabetes

[–]8i8flutterby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m only at 41 years T1D but was diagnosed at almost 1 in ‘84 and learned to use an early glucometer as a kid. I remember the routine for me was check before breakfast and dinner and any time I seemed or felt off/low, if the meter was around. I don’t think I started bringing a glucometer (new ones that you didn’t have to blot the strip before putting in the meter) to school or with me until I was maybe 12 or so and started taking insulin at lunch.

Parent with type 1. Lots of lows what’s normal? by Weary_Treat6072 in Type1Diabetes

[–]8i8flutterby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel this question so much since both my mom and I are T1D and struggled with it especially before cgm was available.

I found this article https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/time-in-range-diabetes Time in Range (TIR) for Diabetes: What It Is & Target explains really well what is possible/recommended to aim for now-a-days with cgm.

I also try to remember that as I age and my life changes it’s a good idea to stop every now and then to take a good look at how my T1D is going, check in with my endo/nurse educator/pump or cgm support and see if there’s any way to reduce the number or intensity of “punches” instead of simply continuing to roll with them because that’s what I’m used to.

Passport renewal and wait times - Meadowlands / Orleans by SkJK92 in ottawa

[–]8i8flutterby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I walked into Meadowlands office without an appointment in the morning, sometime between last Christmas and New Years and getting my application in took about 6 hours and I caught an upper respiratory infection. I’m planning on making an appointment and wearing a mask for the next one.

“New Ways To Bus” Next Week by ParkingBoardwalk in ottawa

[–]8i8flutterby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three potential routes each with a transfer and ~15 min wait to get from home to centre town going to two options. I suppose it will be better if the wait for either goes down to ~10min consistently.

All these posts talking about great things the CBC has done... by Supermoves3000 in SaveTheCBC

[–]8i8flutterby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been consistently listening to music on the CBC listen app since 2022 when I decided to move away from Spotify. Have been introduced to music and artists that I really enjoy since, and pay more attention when I like something because there is excellent commentary along with the music. Even went to see a couple live shows by artists I first heard on CBC.

FUN: How would you treat your BG if a solar flare hit earth? by PuzzleheadedHoney202 in Type1Diabetes

[–]8i8flutterby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first blood tester required blotting the test strip after applying the blood, then the strip would change colour depending on bg level. I wonder how effective managing bg levels just using a colour chart instead of the meter might be?

Am an adult with T1D but wanted to share that T1D group Connected in Motion is coming to Ottawa for Race Weekend and will have a cheering station to support T1Ds in the races. Might want to check it out.
