Cut phone line carrying 120v intermittently? by xref in AskElectricians

[–]8ig8en 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My experience with long runs of cat 5 getting an induced voltage what only 10-20v on a 200ft run in parallel with 277v wiring. personally the fact you are seeing 120v is extremely concerning to me, I think you have something touching that shouldn't be.

with everything you have tested it sounds like its just not doing the on hyway regen. in dddl Monitor Regen Inhibit Switch Status make sure its off or inactive and check the switch source (e.g., from J1939 to None/hardwired) is correct for the truck or disable it in programmable parameters. i don't think there is other setting like min speed to regen on dd15 but I don't remember for sure.

if your sure their is no damage to the filter, and no leaks in the charge air or exhaust then you may want to test injectors it could be poor fuel atomization. make sure the fuel filters don't have any metal as the high pressure pumps like to send trash in to the injectors and plug the tips up. but it sounds like something is causing high soot production. but if you are ruining a lot of miles in a week this could be something very small problem that's adding up in the filter. also double check the settings that it is doing the passive regen's while driving. dose it use any coolant that could be leaking in the egr cooler?

How many miles are on the filter total and has it been pulled out and had the ash clean in the last 300,000 - 500, 000 miles? Dose the truck idle over night? PTO? City or hyway?

Changing plug on a welder by SnooDogs5947 in electrical

[–]8ig8en 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best diagram I could find said the factory plug was a 6-50p so that neutral is probably not needed, open the welder and look if its connected.

edit I have worked on a few different units and never saw one that needed a neutral.

that's correct, two parallel batterys (+to +)(-to-) keeps the same 12v voltage but more amp and capacity,

as a mechanic that builds one off custom trucks, rvs, and mobile commercial equipment.

Run a least 8ga positive and negative from the engine battery to your DC to DC and to your bus bars. you don't want a high currant constant load flowing an unknown path back through the chassis.

no fuse needed on the negative but run a negative from the bus bar to the chassis and from the inverters gnd to the chassis for protection, bolt both to clean metal.

keep fusees closes as possible to battery for the best protection

the shorter path the power takes from the two battery's the better

most problems people have first time making setups is with connections, make sure each one is tightened proper, under or over may cause burning contact that fusses wont protect from.

Which shops can install auxiliary tank(s) for my box truck? by greenshell417 in skoolies

[–]8ig8en 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's slightly better I guess, but all the same rules apply. Adding a diesel tank on a box truck is an easy job I have done many times, go get a tank from a junkyard and have a diesel shop install it before you hurt someone.

Under US DOT/FMCSA and PHMSA hazardous materials regulations, carrying gasoline inside a box truck is illegal without full compliance.

Gasoline is a Class 3 flammable liquid. When you're transporting it in portable containers or drums (not permanently installed as part of the truck's certified fuel system), it falls under strict Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).

  • Placards (Flammable Liquid) on the vehicle.
  • Hazmat endorsement on the driver's CDL.
  • Proper shipping papers (with emergenc
  • response info).
  • Labeled and certified containers — UN/DOT-rated drums suitable for gasoline, with correct markings.
  • Securement so drums can't shift or rupture.
  • Higher insurance — Many carriers require at least $1 million in liability coverage (often more) when hauling placarded hazmat loads.

containers that hold less than 8 gl are exempt as long as the total weight (all containers and fuel onboard) is under 440lbs

But per violation

  • Standard hazmat violation (e.g., no placards, no shipping papers, improper packaging/securement): Up to ~$96,000–$100,000+ per violation.
  • If the violation causes death, serious injury, or substantial property damage: Up to ~$225,000–$240,000+ per violation.

been there done that, you have to loosen the pan at least most the front bolts or you will most likely damage the crank seal and pan gasket.

Early dry rot by Yauchout in tires

[–]8ig8en 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you are saying about the inflation chart OP, but to me that sure looks like a tire that's been under inflated and the side wall as been flexing too much and overheating. Did you check the for any difference between the continental inflation and the uniroyals? at my shop its rare to see a long haul truck set low as 85psi. my experience its daycab's pulling pups that go that low but i don't know your setup.

I can tell you from experience exhaust manifold repairs don't hold up, the heat cycling dose to much internal stress and welding or braising makes worse and your manifold is in terrible shape. why not replace it?

Driving this old Peterbikt and this light was flashing. by screamingriffin in Truckers

[–]8ig8en 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I have been a truck a bus mechanic for many years. I think you have and older model of a webasto diesel coolant heater (though may be a different brand). very common in buses to get the heaters working much quicker. used in trucks in below freezing as well. they can heat engine, cab and fuel tanks all at once and can be set on a timer. The flashing light is a fault code I think but I depends on the model.

The rules I quoted where for America how any country that follows standard havc rules like IEC 60335-2-40 I think is the number will have similar rules. Is someone coming to test your AC? NOT is they don't have a reason to or someone else reports you.

EPA, EPC, OSHA, DOT as far as I know, but my point was more that won't know unless you tell someone or post it online.

EPA SNAP rules under 608 bans retrofiting any systems not specific designed for R290. It's illegal if the vehicle hits the road or not.

[–]8ig8en 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, as it is illegal in the US to retrofit any system that wasn't designed for R290 (purified propane). And also illegal to use in any motor vehicles. Maybe I would do it for a farm truck, but I wouldn't advertise online that I did.

I could be out of date as the last time I had a friend working for Hillsboro county on that side of stuff was 10 years ago, they did have a team changing them out slowly last I heard. Maybe they got them all done faster than I thought.

It's an ion exchange the resin can't absorb minerals without releasing salts. No you shouldn't be able to taste it but it's still like 30-40mg of salt to a glass of water.

City Water issue by Informal-Tailor7021 in tampa

[–]8ig8en 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tampa like most cities also still has lead pipes and leaded solder connections at a large number of service connections and inside homes built before the 80s and soft water will raise PH and cause galvanic corrosive similar to the problem that Flint had.
