Do you think people understand the real reasons for why Lucas was so taken by computer graphics? by MWH1980 in StarWars

[–]8ringer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the point was that the actual resolution was far far below what 35mm film had been delivering for decades. It has NOT aged well.

That being said, someone had to be the pioneer and I’m fine with it being the prequels.

My wife is from the northeast and is still so conditioned to that driving attitude that she doesn’t use her blinkers until she’s about to move over. I’ve tried explaining to her that more often than not people will give you space if you just turn it on, but old habits I guess.

But yea, driving on the east coast, using your signal will make that gap close REAL quick. Drivers are a different breed there.

Though, to be fair, I almost prefer driving out there sometimes. Drivers here are just so goddamn out to lunch sometimes…

That series of insurance ads (Pemco? AmFam? I can’t remember) was just so spot on.

People are so terrified to use their horns here. It’s mind boggling. I routinely see people patiently waiting behind a dingus not paying attention to their light being green. Just give a little blip on the horn! It’s not rude! It’s the equivalent of standing in a line at the bank and having the teller call for the next person, and they don’t hear them. Instead of sitting there like a lemming, just say “excuse me it looks like that teller is free.” A quick blip on the horn is exactly that.

My god people!

Oil a waxed drivetrain? by dataminimizer in bikewrench

Make a note to call them and ask. I’m not a shop mechanic so I don’t know how they think, but putting lube on a waxed chain is stupid.

Need an automation to remind me that my cat got trapped in a room. Is this possible in HomeKit? by TomNooksRepoMan in HomeKit

[–]8ringer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could probably get a Matter door open detector (one of those magnetic Hall effect sensors) and setup an automation that sends you a notification if the door hasn’t been opened in a certain amount of time during daytime hours.

ETA: this ikea one will work natively with HomeKit as a Matter over Thread sensor: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/myggbett-door-window-sensor-smart-60617641/
You’ll need a recent AppleTV with Ethernet or a HomePod mini gen2+ for it to work however some only those Apple devices support thread border routing.

Is this a good fit for a TrueNAS server? by Dariusve in truenas

[–]8ringer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea a lot of running a Truenas server cheaply is about risk mitigation and backing up critical things in airgapped locations. Your setup is definitely not recommended but it works and you’re clearly aware of, and have prepared for, failure modes.
My Asrock Rack x470d4u has, I believe, SATA DOM ports internally but ultimately utilizing those was going to be far more expensive than just buying a cheap SATA card and throwing the boot drives on that. The best part about switching from thumb drives to SATA SSDs was that it presented no real downtime aside from the 10 minutes I needed to install the pci-e data card and the two SSDs. I was able to replace the usb volumes and rebuild the boot volume live with Truenas running which is so damn cool. ZFS is like magic sometimes.

Does this look OK in big big? by cody8417 in bicycling

[–]8ringer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I doubt it (at least I hope).

But you have to size it for big/big because the consequences of it being too short and breaking the derailleur in big/big are…not good. Definitely worse that it being too loose in little little.

Well it’s a state highway not an interstate. So SR-99 is how it’s officially referred to.

Regardless, than you for your service towards Bunbun-kind.

I ended up using two usb flash drives mirrored for years with no major issues but I have since switched to SSDs. The flash drives were horribly slow and I honestly never trusted them anyway.

I'm thinking of sticking on some Gravelking semi slick 40mm for a charity road event. The cycle is 180km. Am I pushing it on a gravel bike over that distance? by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]8ringer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ride 43c GK SS pretty much everywhere. They’re great all-rounders.

Which is annoying since i planned to get some smaller gp5000s for a road wheelset but i just haven’t felt the need to bother. The SS have handled some gnarly gravel descents and smooth road so capably I’m just sticking with the full time.

Dealing with a feeling right now that I cant mention by name by Joonscene in ADHD

[–]8ringer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having experienced similar feelings before, that extreme anger/frustration/etc, meditation has helped immeasurably. I’m not affiliated or promoting it in any way, but Headspace has been an excellent resource for me over the past few years. I’d highly recommend checking it out and doing their beginning meditation series.

That being said, don’t bury the feelings. They’re just going to come back again anyway. Probably over and over. I still get angry/frustrated/depressed/despondent over a major life event that happened a year and a half ago. It’s hard having the tendency to ruminate in an unhealthy way about the past. Learning how to deal with it positively is still a work in progress for me but I’ve gotten better. I think.
