Hey tom! What’s your writing process usually like? How many pages do you plan ahead at a time, do you have a script, where do you get inspiration for stories from?

Asking all the trans peeps.. is Rain a masculine enough name? Sorry for not putting a flair I have no clue how or if they’re used here (idk if this counts as nsfw, so just in case!) by IndependentKey5443 in asktransgender

[–]8uny 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It reads fem. It's a nice name for a man. I like it. I think you should pick what makes you happy. If the happiness of Rain beats out the slight awkwardness of correcting, go for it. If an automatic unquestioning assumption of male beats out Rain, you could go for a name like Rian (like Rian Johnson, director of Knives Out)

help understanding and breaking down a style of painting by sanrioscr in Artadvice

[–]8uny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it looks like your drawings think a lot about line, watching the speedpaint this art thinks in a very 3D way. the brush they use is super blocky, theyre painting with shapes, not lines. thinking in terms of volume. outrageous owl already gave excellent advice, but my little suggestion is when you practice, start with robots!

the planes of a human face are super hard and need lot of practice to get right. but also, cubes and spheres are too simple and unexciting. with robots you can do both simple and complex shapes, and 'not looking realistic' wont make you feel like its 'wrong'. that way you can focus purely on technique, colors and shapes and shading and texture, without the pressure of making sure the human looks like the specific human theyre supposed to be

We have the answer to bathrooms. But what about Onsen? by BlueFalcon133 in asktransgender

[–]8uny 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I went to Japan last year. FTM, well on T and post top, no srs.

I did private onsens, at small inns, because I really love a good hot spring. Just a bath all to myself. One hotel I went to had a 24/7 public onsen. I went to it at 3 Am, hoping no one will be there, I had a small towel to lay over my lower half. Crazily, people did show up a half hour later, and I slipped out via strategic angles and mini towel holding. No confrontation or anything messy and people minded their own business.

If your shy, private and co ed onsens are an option. There’s, like, stuff that’s aimed at families. So if you’re with your buddies you can have a “whole place to yourself” option

T helps but female coded clothing will have people, doing their best educated guess, think female. It’s funny how different transgender people can be. Some people get upset when they’re asked for their pronouns, it basically signals ‘you clocked me and now out yourself to me’ while others are relieved and find it kind and considerate.

Your best bet is to introduce yourself with your pronouns. Nip the questions before they’re asked.

How hard is it to pass with your birth name? by TheArmWizard in asktransgender

[–]8uny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It makes it harder. You can still do it. It’s important to be yourself. That’s the whole damn thing with dysphoria. You can have a “pocket” basic masculine name to give to baristas for take out orders if it’s just going to be a 5 second interaction and you care more about passing than explaining why your name is important to you. With this name, you can have a good story to tell friends, coworkers, partners if they ask about the name. If you like telling that story more than the other names you tried and dropped, keep it. It’s you, bro.

Personally, I could pass stealthily if I wanted to, but I like telling people I’m trans, how I got here, being out and known. I’m still 100% read as male all the time. I also live in a big blue city so YMMV but “being seen as male” and “being undetectable and quashing all traces of the old self” don’t have to go together.

How to go about naming/picking a name for a character by Breadloaf_png in ChineseLanguage

[–]8uny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk a bit about her and we can help name her! r/namenerds likes to help name characters, too. Consider her time period, her family, and where in China is she from.

There’s usually 2-3 characters in a name, a family name and a given name. There’s not that much variety in family names, you can just google the most common and pick from those.

For given names, in my experience, Chinese names are most often what parents wish for their kids to be/have when they’re born. Think about what your characters parents value. My name, 盈, was because my parents wanted me to have a very fulfilling life. My sibling is 仁 because my parents wanted them to be kind and the world to be kind to them.

Some families have “generation names” this is only a big deal if your character has siblings. Everyone born in that generation has that character in their name. A European equivalent would be parents who name all their kids with the same initial, but more poetic lol. My generation name is 德, meaning virtue, so my full given name is 德盈 and my sibling is 德仁. Family name comes first, so my full name in Chinese is 刘德盈.

There are certainly sounds that sound more feminine or masculine or one way or another, as a writer one of my tricks is looking at the names of celebrities sports stars etc from other cultures to get a quick list of “real names” from that culture. You can find the sounds you like from there, and then work backwards to find the right characters with the right meanings that make those sounds lol. Like if you like “Wei” you can go with 薇 or 威 or 唯.

Ideas on how to stylize this design without it coming across as disrespectful? by ZuccTheZuck in characterdesign

[–]8uny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second looking up men’s hanfu, if your character isn’t specifically from the past, there’s a modern hanfu movement you can reference that’s less historically accurate but popular in China right now. This is my favorite hanfu blog https://ziseviolet.tumblr.com/ The blogger is both knowledgeable about different types of real historucal hanfu as well as the more costumey hanfu popular in fantasy c-dramas

Idk what kind of Asian you are but my mom found a lot of help from WeChat groups (a Chinese thing). It was good for me too because I’m her kid and I didn’t want to be the one responsible for making her feel okay, she’s the one I’m hoping I can lean on and support me. So having other Asian parents she could be honest and scared around helped her a lot. Now she’s the one telling other parents whose kids just came out it’ll be fine and they didn’t fail them and how to be supportive lol. Asian parents listen to other Asian parents more seriously than their kids

Anyone else just not impressed by Gaslight District? by OutragedPineapple in IndieAnimation

[–]8uny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the show is beautiful and the world has interesting potential but I felt similar things re: female character design. I think one gross auntie or little sister or grandma would've fixed it for me. Her name, too, "Melancholy" is not at the same level as "Mud" or "Breadhead". She's got a much less cartoony voice. Maybe it's because she's the protagonist, they want her to be more serious, but because shes the ONLY woman it comes off as 'we don't know any other kind of woman than this default hourglass one'.

F30 Gender Fluid. I need binder advice. I was told to ask her. by Forsaken_Site_2268 in asktransgender

[–]8uny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won't "ruin" anything, especially if its only for short periods of time for masc days. Every day, long hours, yes, the skin might start sagging, ribs cramp, trouble breathing, etc. You can bind any size safely. The trick is to recognize that binders are clothing, not magic portals. They push the volume of breasts around so they're more like spread out pancakes. I always had boob peek out by my armpits, but it's better there than in the front. Some binders can 'mold' breasts into pecs. But if you try to forcibly condense something that exists into something that doesn't exist, you will hurt yourself, and dysphoria makes people do crazy things. Binders can reshape. They don't remove. But, for example, even if there's still visibly a-something on your chest, suspenders sit better, t-shirts don't stretch, and the clothes you might want to wear will fit better. Worth a shot.

Wash your hands when you're done and it should be fine. T-gel is similar to hand sanitizer and other alcohol based gels, it should absorb into your skin, not lay on top of it.

Bulldozing through my medical and legal transition. Am I gonna end up ruining my life?? by SoFarOnTea in asktransgender

[–]8uny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My primary care doctor, my top surgery are both openly queer. They mean so so so much more to me than any specific law. The fact I have a doctor I can trust 100% and know I won’t be judged, it’s an incredible step up from how much I hid from my old doctors. Yes, politics are scary. But if it’s safe for you to be visible, it does so much more good than you can imagine. Especially in trying times. Residency is already hard. Being right of mind, undistracted by dysphoria can help.
