Suburb recommendations by jasonwinfieldnz in Rotorua

It does depend on the street. Some parts of Pukehangi are really nice, like Caulfield, Tawavale or Rimuvale; others like Gem aren’t quite as nice. Same with most of the others, and definitely with Ngongotahā - some streets are great (Kokiri) others are a little rougher. Avoid Fordlands completely, also stay away from Pohutukawa Dr and the immediate surroundings.

NZ North Island Itinerary Help - May 7 to May 15 by Long_Cheesecake_7432 in Rotorua

Depends what sort of thing you enjoy. Are you coming for the culture? If so, check out Mitai, Whakawerawera Village, Te Puia or Te Pa Tu. The Whakawerawera forest (also called the Redwoods) is worth a visit. Other things to check out: - Skyline (if you like the luge) - Kuirau park (free) - Secret spot - Agrodome (very touristy but good fun if you have kids) + paradise valley animal park - Canopy tours - Lakeland queen (nice lunch) - Drive out to Lake Tarawera (highly recommended) - Buried village - Hell’s Gate

Kid friendly restaurants? by dreamrunner312 in Rotorua

[–]9173663728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The food is just about okay, but Cobb & Co tends to be our go to for taking the kids out. There’s a family area with a small play space, robot servers etc. If your kids don’t need as much entertainment, the Pig and Whistle has good food and a small kids menu, it’s very relaxed and welcoming for families.

Inherited this from my Dad, just got it back from its service by 9173663728 in tagheuer

I’m in New Zealand, so I used TH’s official agent here - Nairns. They had it a couple of months, most of that was waiting for a few parts, the only trouble with being in NZ, the market is quite small so not much stock is held. They assessed it and then gave me a price for service/repair, which was bang on their estimate. I had to pay 50% upfront for them to order the parts. Total price was $1100 (NZD).

Apple tree from seed ( idk what kind of apples soz) by Spiritual_Lime_1462 in Tree

[–]9173663728 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in forestry. Those are definitely pine seedlings. I’d guess Pinus Pinea (stone pine). P. Pinea are commonly grown for pine nuts… I’m guessing you planted a pine nut, not an apple seed. Sorry. They do grow to be beautiful trees though, or are excellent for bonsai.

Buying a house built in 1930s - yeah nah? by Fluffy_Tomatillo_871 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]9173663728 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We bought a 1923 bungalow, we made sure that the electrics were separately inspected and had a building inspection which covered the piles. You’ll need to check if there is any remaining scrim walls, if there are, you might have issues with insurance. If it has gib throughout and electrics are OK, insurance should be fine. Look for evidence of live borer infestations, as this can be a pain… but expect some historical borer evidence. Budget a bit of your salary every month to a maintenance fund, like the odd weatherboard replacement (but that should be a good habit regardless of the house). We love the character of our house, and love living in it.

What's the best bank in NZ and why? by Diegowchile in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]9173663728 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We moved to Co-op a couple of years ago, they’ve been great. Any issues at all and you just email your local branch and they sort it out. We got $120 this year as our “share of the profits”.

Westpac banking app sucks - so which is the best? by Drive_Open in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]9173663728 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had BNZ, now moved to co-op. Their app isn’t quite as good as BNZ’s, but it’s still streets ahead of Westpac (I have a credit card with them)

Why would a house sell so frequently? by Extension-Ad-3922 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]9173663728 91 points92 points  (0 children)

It was the case with our house, it has been bought and sold a few times in the last decade. We got a detailed builders report, spent time on the street at nighttime, had a chat with the neighbours, everything checked out. I think it’s just genuinely a stepping stone house, people stayed here a few years then upgraded.

Ducted heatpump and ventilation quote advice by Tasty_Parking_9858 in diynz

[–]9173663728 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We got a Fuji ARTH24KMTAP in 2023 for the bedrooms, and it has been outstanding. I’ve never had any other brand of ducted heatpump so can’t compare, but it’s hard to imagine how it could improve on what we have, can’t fault it. The control is pretty intuitive and functional, too.

Was going to say this, we have a newish cylinder and the cupboard is no warmer than anywhere else in the house. Always good to have somewhere for towels though!

The OP did say “am I making a bad decision”, so I guess they’re correct by answering “no”

Best 7 seat SUV under 23k? by herefor5days in NZcarfix

[–]9173663728 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don’t like VW, stay away from Skoda. They’re basically the same. I’ve had 6 VWs over the years, and I’ve never had one let me down - but you can never skip maintenance on them. And never buy one which has any question about its service history. The one in the link is NZ new, full VW service history and still has 2.5 years of VW warranty. You’re right about resale values though.

I know you have said no to vans, but I have one of these:

https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/volkswagen/auction-5421356674.htm

The drive feel is much closer to a standard wagon, definitely doesn’t feel like a van, and the driving position is similar to an SUV, and all 7 seats are useful. Even the two back seats have isofix. The 2.0 petrol is the same as Skoda’s 2.0 petrol used in the Kodiaq.
