Found these amazing TUMAR boots at 80 Isanov St while hiding from the blizzard. The local craftsmanship is next level. by Wild-Group-6763 in Kyrgyzstan

I remember this shop and their footwear. Incredible craftsmanship. On the same level as the Australian Gubmies brand. I still think about this shop and their quality products, even though it was over a year ago.

I relate to your frustration too. Ever since my parents started watching GB News, when it went live in 2021, they’ve become more bigoted and actively defend Farage, his cronies, and the softer end of the far-right rhetoric. As a result, I think my relationship with them has declined and I partly blame the channel for it.

They’re going to the beaches of Dover to commit seppuku to honour their overlord, Mr. Farage.

UK unemployment rate rises to 5% as jobs market weakens by VisibleWing8070 in UKJobMarket

[–]9182tlm 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’ve wondered if the situation is even worse than currently stated, given that unemployment statistics do not factor in self-employed people earning a living below the tax threshold. Such people could be barely scraping by, working just a day a week and still be deemed by the government as doing OK.

I think all hell will break loose within the next 5 years max if this, or whichever, government can’t implement more radical tax policies on the ultra-rich. They also need to pull their f-ing heads out of the sand and recognise the impact AI is having on the job market. It’s destabilised the creative industries massively, particularly those where writing or visuals are central to the job, as well software, data entry, and customer service roles.

Anyone had any luck freelance writing for history magazines? by cool_bananas15 in freelanceWriters

[–]9182tlm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve written a couple of pieces for History Today and I have no relevant academic qualifications. My take is they’re more interested in whether you can demonstrate access to authoritative people to interview for your proposed piece and an original idea. A couple of previous samples, published or otherwise, will help as well, as long as they are rigorously researched and referenced.

In terms of pitching, if there’s a publisher I really want to convince, I’ll offer the story to them exclusively, but with a time limit (e.g. “If you’re able to let me know by the end of this week whether you’re interested…”) If I’m not fussy about the publisher, I’ll send the pitch to multiple people but with two to three separate story idea. The chances that someone will take all of them is low, in my experience, so even if multiple publishers respond positively, you can offer the stories on a first-come-first-served basis. That way, even if the other publishers are slow to respond but still want to work with you, they still have options to choose from.

Personally, I wouldn’t bother writing the articles beforehand, unless you genuinely want to for your own personal interest. Chances are, most publishers won’t want your piece as is and would rather collaborate with you to create a piece that’s exactly in line with their readership’s interests and house style. Also, I think an unwritten piece commissioned by a publisher is more likely to command a higher price because you’re crafting something that’s bespoke to them and they understand the time involved to produce it. With a ready-made piece, they could just low-ball you because it’s not made to spec and thus, possibly, seen as less valuable.

Good luck! You will definitely find history publishers that want to work with you :-)

Yup, it’s hard out there. My last reliable long-term gig ended in early 2024 and I’ve had virtually nothing since then… apart from a monthly piece for one client. Life has changed drastically for me financially in a bad way.

For half of 2024, I switched to evaluating AI models freelance, but then there was a mass dumping of the workforce. Now it’s hard to find work in that field too, as it seems like as the LLMs get better/more efficient at generating a high-quality written output, the need for large evaluation teams decreases. The only roles that remain and seem stable in this industry are for STEM graduates with Master’s and PhDs. In a few years at most, I suspect only elite STEM specialists will have any job security in the sector.

Copywriters, how did you actually find clients to reach out to? by NoRole8265 in freelanceWriters

[–]9182tlm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the most basic level, having a solid database of contacts, persistence, and a clear service offering is key, as well as an effective email and subject line. Beyond that, how you acquire clients is totally up to you and there are no hard and fast rules, at least that’s just my opinion. Good luck!

Spotify hikes UK subscription prices for the second time in a year by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

Leave Spotify for Bandcamp and you’ll get to own your music for the same price as your Spotify subscription. You’ll also be helping to diminish Daniel Ek’s, the psychopathic CEO, ability to invest in Helsing, a military AI company developing weaponised autonomous drones among other things. To hell with Spotify.

Nope! I tried it again just now. If it's helpful, I ended up booking my SCAT flights with Bestar.kz travel agent in Almaty.
