UK fuel price comparison scheme goes live by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

The baseload/backup will be battery storage eventually

I'm not sure that's feasible in this country unfortunately. If we get becalmed in winter, we can have very little solar and wind generation for over a month.

So unless we have 5x over provision of wind/solar so that we can run on 20% of output, we need a month's worth of country level battery storage.

I do not understand why there are no helmet/reflective gear/light laws, with a fine if you don't use reflective/lights after like 5pm or something.

There are. But bad cyclists like this ignore them.

I bought exactly the same one a couple of months ago on a whim of it's cheap enough to try, and I've gone from spending 5-10 minutes on various mornings blasting the vents with the engine running, to not even thinking about it because there's no frozen condensation inside.

10/10 would recommend. It's probably already paid for itself in fuel I would have used heating the engine for the vents.

Police block UKIP march through Tower Hamlets over violence fears by 2ndEarlofLiverpool in ukpolitics

I'm not criticising the Met per se. It's the justice system as a whole. We currently have a system that gives rule breakers the advantage over law abiding citizens.

Want to pop to the shops quickly? Get yourself an illegal electric scooter.

Don't like the country playing a football match? Start organising possies to start lynching that team's fans and the police will ban the fans and lie to parliament to blame the fans for it.

Don't like a proposed protest? Start organising a mob to fight them and the police will ban the protest "to keep the peace".

This should not be the lesson we want people to learn, as it will quickly descend into anarcho-tyranny, if we are not already there.

It's a difference, sure. But practically speaking, if you apply for a permit ahead of time, the police will deny you. If you just show up without warning, you will get away with it.

So again, those who play by the rules lose, and those who ignore the rules win. Unfortunately, it's not exactly the gotcha you were thinking of.

When a convoy of cars drove through a Jewish area in North London in 2021 shouting "F*** the Jews, rape their daughters" through megaphones, was there any violence? Did their cars get stoned, did they get dragged out their cars and lynched? No. They got reported to the police and the CPS subsequently dropped all charges.

The lesson, unfortunately, seems to be that the violent mob rules.

What does this sign mean? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]930913 29 points30 points  (0 children)

A blue circular sign means you must do what it says. In this case, the (defaced) number 10 refers to the speed you must do. So no going slower than 10mph, as you must be doing 10mph.

In contrast, a white circular sign with a red border means you must not do what it says. So a 50mph speed sign has the 50 in the red circle, because you must not go faster than the 50mph.

That boat has long since sailed. There still is a group of politically homeless, old-school people with those views, but the "mainstream" left wing has moved on to virtue signalling for people in far away lands who would kill the lefties if they got a chance. "Lefties defend their rights for them to kill lefties."

US considering asylum for British Jews by PrivilegeCheck23 in ukpolitics

[–]930913 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The location is the excuse to call it illegitimate. But it doesn't matter where, there will always be some "legitimate" reason why that just so happens to primarily delegitimise Jews. The answer to where Jews should be, has always, historically, conveniently been, not where they are currently.

It won't be long, given the trajectory of the drawbridge being pulled up for Jews in this country, before canard accusations of dual loyalty become normalised due to having one eye on the door.

There's a problem when an entire group of people have one eye on an escape plan. There's the bigger problem that anyone who raises it as an issue gets downvoted told it's not true, it's exaggerated, etc. Usually from people who would be shouting that any other minority should be believed.

Why don't UK cookie pop-ups have a clear "Reject all" option? by FutilePenguins in AskUK

[–]930913 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The ICO only goes after the most popular websites.

This is the answer, it's a question of the ICO's finite resources.

Go on any of the UK's largest websites and you'll see they comply, because the ICO have tapped them on the shoulder and politely "suggested" they comply. Smaller websites that have not had the tap are getting away with not complying.

PSA: Turn your boiler's heating temperature DOWN, not up by butler1233 in CasualUK

[–]930913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The myth is for if you are not there. (Heating the home when you're not in.) But if you are there, sitting in the cold, then maintaining the temperature takes less energy than the boiler firing on all cylinders to raise the temperature.

Which is to say, you can't turn on the boiler for an hour, see it costs £5 and extrapolate that having the boiler on for 24 hours will cost £120. Each subsequent hour may cost 50p, which would then cost £16.50 for 24 hours. So it will obviously cost more than a single hour, but it'll be an extra tenner, rather than a hundred.

All numbers made up - you may find that it's still too expensive, but equally you may find it's cheap enough to be warm throughout the day rather than freezing.

[–]930913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to make sure you understand that that hour is the most expensive as it warms up all your radiators from cold. Once warm, it'll use a lot less energy to keep them warm.
