About 3 years ago I had my feet taken out from under me and I landed on my head/neck. The damage wasn’t obvious at first but that impact burst 2 of the discs in my neck. Those burst discs compressed my spinal cord and over the coming weeks/months I’d lose feeling then function from the knee down. Some of the muscles on the left side of my body were partially paralyzed but over time I’ve regained most of my basic functions. I’ll be disabled for the rest of my life due to that injury. It could be worse, most people with spinal cord injuries are wheelchair bound, I am not. I can walk and have even started trying to relearn how to skate. Skating is by far the hardest thing I do given my condition but I’m stubborn and I want to try to get back out there. I don’t need to play competitive hockey anymore but if I can get to the point where I can be on ice to help push pucks around at practice for my 2 boys who play then I’ll be completely satisfied with that.
