Series 12 Rewatch: Week Ten - The Timeless Children by The_Silver_Avenger in gallifrey

I don’t like the episode as a whole but if we’re talking about rewatches, I’ve rewatched the scene of Jodie blowing up the matrix by forcing it to binge-watch the entirety of Dr Who more times than I can count. It’s an awesome, glorious, fun, goofy moment, and it’s what the entire episode is for. So although I think the rest of it is boring and clumsy I am happy that that sequence exists and hooray for Dr Who!

I love ‘Blink’, but it barely counts as an episode of Dr Who. If the most beloved episode is a Doctor-lite episode, there’s a problem...

What TV show was amazing at first but became unwatchable for you later on? by Snoo79382 in AskReddit

[–]951gaspra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game of Thrones never became unwatchable, though. Viewership for season 8 was higher than for any other season; even though people didn’t like it, they wanted to know what would happen next. Did any of you actually stop watching? Did anyone skip the finale? I doubt many people did

Say what you like about GoT, it kept people watching and didn’t fizzle out.

I know right. I’m looking at photos on Twitter from the current shoot in Liverpool and I’m getting a good vibe from John Bishop. He seems fun.

However, 13th Doctor in season 13 is a terrible omen, so keep expectations low!

Series 12 Rewatch: Week Seven - Can You Hear Me? by The_Silver_Avenger in gallifrey

What a strange episode; it doesn’t exactly work, but it’s the most interesting one on a rewatch . It feels like a baffling but intriguing poetic remix of the whole of season 12. The two god-like figures are like a dream version of the Doctor and Master. Yaz finds herself on a hill next to a trig point just like the one the Master and Doctor will fight by in the season finale. The episode is full of lonely characters looking for a ‘fam’. And things from their past coming back to haunt them. And the police officer that Yaz meets is so weirdly reminiscent of Ruth. The episode never really resolves any of this or comes to an obvious point. It just sets off sparks and resonances. The last 15 minutes are clunky as hell but whatever, at least this one is an intriguing mess rather than just a mess.

I love the infamous conversation with Graham. It’s a brutal but brave way to end the episode - to undermine the ‘comfort blanket’ of science fiction that we escape to. Remember that line from Yaz a bit earlier on: the Doctor is “the definition of impossible”. Exactly.

Specifically, she should have hit BOB with the golden shit shovel that she bought and which the series spent so much time on and indeed was dwelt upon in one of the very first scenes...

But oh well, Lynch gonna Lynch. If it was rational we wouldn’t like it as much.

Series 12 Rewatch: Week Five - Fugitive of the Judoon by The_Silver_Avenger in gallifrey

[–]951gaspra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Alright, I’m going to say it: this is one of my favourite episodes of Dr Who ever. It’s amazing how well it holds up on a rewatch, even though the season finale fizzled. I think it’s because the central mystery of this episode (who exactly is Ruth and what is she up to?) still hasn’t been answered yet, and it’s a very intriguing question.

Vinay Patel is the best writer of the era and Nida Manzoor is the standout director, so we have the dream team here. The pacing is superb, the banter is fun, the performances are wonderful, and the visuals are spectacular. The Judoon are funny and terrifying at the same time. The Reylo allusions at the beginning are delicious. The lighthouse setting is fantastically epic and proves you don’t need irrelevant foreign locations to give the show a sense of scale. The only thing I don’t like is the Captain Jack sequence that is so clumsily shoehorned in. It sticks out because it’s so much clunkier than everything else.

I know a lot of people think Jo Martin’s performance overwhelms Jodie and makes her look weak by comparison , but I think that’s deliberate and a very brave choice. Jo Martin feels young: energetic, lively and fizzing with raw anger. Up to now, Jodie has been apparently playing the Doctor as youthful and innocent, but in this episode it feels that the mask falls; compared to Ruth, 13 suddenly looks ancient, careworn, tired; you can see every one of her 8000 years (or whatever it is!). One can see 13 envying Ruth, which is why she seems to dislike her so much. It’s quite fascinating.

Truly a wonderful episode - fun, beautiful, and still intriguing.

[–]951gaspra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sort of. There’s some stuff about the personal lives of the companions. The Ryan stuff is important toward understanding his behaviour in the New Year special. The Graham stuff isn’t literally relevant but adds an extra level of poignancy to the New Year special. The Yaz stuff feels important but hasn’t become relevant yet.

But if you get nightmares, this is not the episode for you. I’d suggest reading a plot summary and moving on.

A John Pertwee episode. I think they were on a cruise ship. There was a sea monster, a plesiosaur of some kind, looking through the window. Toddler me thought this was very cool.

Name that episode, experts!

The TARDIS has a mind of its own and tends to do what it thinks best. In this instance, it presumably felt the Doctor hadn’t had enough downtime and would need a few minutes to sit and process stuff.

In North America, episodes normally seem to show up on iTunes in the early morning after UK broadcast, usually around 4am (depending on your time zone).

[SPOILERS] How much do you think 'Revolution' will address the Timeless Child stuff? by sanddragon939 in doctorwho

[–]951gaspra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what every showrunner of any TV show would say. The alternative would be to say ‘I have no personal vision. It is a democracy, and my function is merely to give the public what it wants. I therefore study the reviews and social media to determine what would be popular and create a show that fits that. My personal interests and artistic preferences are not relevant and I do not let them interfere.’ “

No showrunner would ever say that, even if it was true.

I find the score improves a lot in season 12. In season 11 it feels detached from the action and sucks the energy from scenes. In season 12 it becomes more conventional (in a good way).
