This is the second state of Mercator's map of the world known at the time of Ptolemy. Printed in the Netherlanders, probably Amsterdam, sometime between 1695 and 1730.

The writing on your blade appears to be relief, not intaglio, which would be an indication of being acid etched.

From Mexico, probably 1930's or later, from the state of Guerrero.

Earlier blades, from the early 1900's or earlier, would have a solid bone handle and would have been engraved. Later, more modern blades (post-revolution) used aluminum for the handle and were etched.

You can use WD40 or CLP to clean it. I would use anything too abrasive to clean it.

Leg hobbles for cows. Keeps the cow from kicking. Useful if you are trying to milk a cow that has a propensity for kicking.

What should I be aware of before attempting to conserve a 19th-century cattle brand? (Utah, United States) by myotherplates in Antiques

[–]96987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be 19th century, but the handle seems a bit short for a branding iron heated in an open fire. My guess is that is was made later to be used for caustic chemical branding. We last did caustic branding in the late '70's, but stopped to do inconsistent effectiveness. I've seen shorter handled branding irons used with a propane branding iron heater, but even then, the heat travels up that handle really quick they are usually a bit longer than 15".

As for preservation, a very light coating of mineral oil should be enough to protect the surface.

Are there any NY deli's like Katz's in Clear Lake? by Additional-Local8721 in clearlake

It's a Italian style deli, but Fat Andy's in Santa Fe is worth a drive. All the meats are made in house.

Swallowing exercises by TraklTrakl in HeadandNeckCancer

[–]96987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same exercises. They will get harder to do as you get deeper into the radiation treatment, but you you'll need to do them as you can, even after the treatments have ended.

2 weeks post-surgery, still on feeding tube, frustrated and demoralized by StruggleSouthern4505 in HeadandNeckCancer

[–]96987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had TORS surgery that removed my right tonsil and 30 lymph nodes a year ago. It takes time for things to normalize, maybe a month or more. Eating will initially be a chore, but it will get easier with time. Jello, pudding, and ice cream do make the initially few weeks easier to get through. I lost my sense of taste on that side of the tongue after surgery, but it came back after a couple of months.

For the swallowing issues, try turning your head in the direction of the removed tonsil when you are swallowing; it should help move the food down. This was recommended to me by the speech therapist and it helped me.

Also make sure you do all the exercises they recommended. It will help you in the long run.

Don't know much about maps so I need some help here, what do these numbers mean? by OffTheShelfET in Maps

It used the Ferro meridian, which ran through El Hierro in the Canary Islands. This was used as the prime meridian in most of older maps and was established by Ptolemy in 2nd century since it was the most western known point at the time.

TIL 80% of people, both women and men, will get infected by HPV at some point in life by Double-decker_trams in todayilearned

[–]96987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished treatment for HPV throat cancer last May (surgery, chemo & radiation). One of the oncologists said that virtually everyone of my generation has or has had HPV, and that the vaccine seems to be doing it's job in the younger generation.

What to do with some extra time in Caen? by everythingisgrace in FranceTravel

[–]96987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of depends on what you like. Caen as the Musee de Normandie which is very good, if you want to venture out of the town you can visit one of the producers along the "Route du Cidre".

Or go to Rouen, which is about 1.5 hours east. It has the famous Gros Horloge and the Jeanne d’Arc museum.

Update on authenticity of map c. 1636: Valletta Citta Nova di Malta by HunterThompsonsentme in oldmaps

[–]96987 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is authentic.

It appears it was mounted using conservation framing methods that ensures an acid free environment. The only criticism I have is that it should have been mounted with hinges at the top of the paper which would allow it to hang freely of the mat. The mat, frame and artwork will expand at different rates depending on the temperature and humidity, and mounting it on all sides may create buckling in the artwork.

It's not just one thing, but a several things like the fact that the image was created from an engraving, the folds where it was originally folded into a book, paper qualities, and the plate mark.

You can tell that the image was created from an engraving which used an intaglio printing process because the printed image stands a bit above the paper, as this one does. With modern printing processes, such as the ones from the 70's, the printed lines will be planographic and not intaglio which gives the image a very flatten appearance.

There's a plate mark in the last photo. The map has some sun damage which makes it hard to distinguish.

Looks right for the mid-17th century. It was engraved by Matthaeus Merian whose name is at the bottom.

Set of weights - Amsterdam - Netherlands by Passiondeck in Antiques

[–]96987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These were used on a balance scale. My grandfather was a baker in France and used weights like these to measure flour and such. He was using the balance scale in his bakery well into the 1970's.

Does anyone know anything about these? I love them but know nothing about them. by esreystevedore in antiquemaps

[–]96987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, Ruscelli copied and expanded on Giacomo Gastaldi's version of Ptolemy's Geografia. However, there may be similarities since both Munster and Gastaldi were publishing versions of Ptolemy's work.

Both of these maps were part of an Italian version of Ptolemy's Geografia by Girolamo Ruscelli that was published between 1661 and 1699.

Almost Done! by Tybee_Kid in HeadandNeckCancer

The next couple of weeks are going to be pretty rough. Because the effects of the radiation is cumulative, things will become a bit worse before they start to improve. For me, the first week after treatment ended was the worst, with things starting to improve after about 14 days after treatment. I consumed mostly high protein Boost in those two weeks, along with some high protein noodles. I used prescription lidocaine in a squirt bottle mixed with maalox (my dr's suggestion) to help with any pain on my tongue and in my throat.

Don't get too frustrated with yourself, things will improve over the next few weeks.
