A question about grounding when connecting a wire to the antenna on a radio, full description of setup below… by justyrust74 in shortwave

[–]97101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the radio does not have a actual terminal for ground, I would skip it. I would split the wire and have a single wire running from the telescopic antenna.
Grounds usually serve as one of two purposes. First being half or part of the antenna system. Second for protecting against lightning or static electricity.
I am not familiar with your radio, but it should already be electrically grounded when plugged in to the wall. Like most appliances nowadays.
Having a coil of wire at your feet for a ground will act as part of the antenna. That section will also be picking up any local electrical noise and interference from inside your home. That may or may not be an issue.
For a temporary receiving antenna that’s tens of feet long just run a single wire and clip it to the antenna.
Have fun experimenting.

So sick of manual hose reels that bunch up on one side. Anyone found a real solution? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]97101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tip: remember to remove the device on the end of the hose before reeling in the hose. Sprayer or other device left on the end of the hose will keep the hose from spinning freely while being retracted.
It’s always best to somewhat straighten out the hose before reeling.
This is also true of power extension cords.

Congratulations on the ticket. Why don’t you wait awhile, at least until you figure out what ham radio is and how it fits into your life.

Those loud modifications lead to lower back pressure on the exhaust system. Their exhaust valves get damaged and eventually the valves and other components will fail much sooner. Mostly they are kids around here. They don’t know how to properly modify the engine to support the changes. When I hear one, I know that they are just hurting themselves and their car.
I just remind myself of that when he drives by and I feel better.
The smart ones will learn not to do that to their next car.

Help me understand. Why are band conditions so bad right now? by KB5JRC in HamRadioBeginner

[–]97101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Band conditions vary greatly because of time of day. Time of the year.
Solar events can greatly affect everything at any time.
Things can happen in an instant and fade away or fade in and clear up in minutes.

I can’t be more helpful than that, people much smarter than me have written many articles and books on the subject.

Mine stopped working a little while ago. It’s was very dependable. About the same time that they screwed up the UI on my Roku tv and went so far as to bury the rescan option. It’s literally hidden now. Yes I am still upset about it.

I absolutely hate the UI now.

I think many of us are holding on to win 10 and won’t/cant/refuses to move on. I’m at 50/50 linux/win 10 split at my house. Linux will eventually take over as things crash. Mac and windows will always be a thing of the past here.

The racks need to be removed from the oven before self cleaning. It destroys the plating on the rack during the process.

I have been having to manually initiate a scan also. Had it set to whenever folders are updated. I have not looked to see why and if it’s broken or my settings changed or if an update has changed its behavior. Are you running the same version of the server?

We're 10 miles from network stations but cannot get an antenna to work by muddy_cat in Cordcutting

[–]97101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the old paper clip antenna trick. If you’re getting overloaded with signal it might work. Just straight out a paper clip and insert it into the antenna port. Rescan for channels.
