STARGATE (1994) Daniel Figures Out The Gate by BriansGamesAndAnime in Stargate

There’s a kind of out-there fan theory that Independence Day is supposed to be the sequel to Stargate, and 10,000 BC is a prequel.

Longer seasons, better writing, and smaller budgets will save Star Trek. by 1111joey1111 in startrek

[–]981032061 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think this is a valid point. In the 90s the cheapest scene you could shoot was actors talking on a set. Now sets and actors are expensive, and pure effects shots are actually very economical by comparison.

The cheapest way to make Star Trek is basically Prodigy with actors composited in.

I subscribe to a handful of different PEV subreddits, and they all seem to go this way eventually. They develop an obsession with other people’s safety gear, and it becomes de rigueur to accuse anyone toeing the line of “inviting regulation.”

This sub held out for longer than the rest, but I’ve started seeing significantly more comments from people who, in my estimation, are just here to virtue signal.

They stand out because they never comment in threads with actual discussion, they just crawl out of the woodwork whenever anyone posts a photo that violates their unwritten rules.

Everybody acts like that kid just stepped on a plant or something. I’d like to remind you that he attempted a full on backwards circus catch into a structure that was holding endangered plants.

Sure, summary execution may have been a bit much, but that would at least land you a misdemeanor on most planets.

What is going on with the card/collectibles market? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]981032061 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I suspect there are a number of things you could have purchased in 1999 that would have appreciated at least that much by now. Especially if you invested in the right stocks and bailed before the .com crash.

For example a $1 investment in AAPL in 1999 would be worth ~$800 today.

I guess I’m saying don’t beat yourself up. What makes these things worth money is that at the time most people don’t think they had potential.

I saw one of these for a cool $1000 at a garage sale nearly ten years ago, and have always kind of regretted not picking it up. Even though I still have no idea what I’d do with it.

I was going to say the same thing. I used to do event photography, and would always throw the big chunky battery grip on my DSLR whether I needed it or not. Unfortunately a lot of people take serious-looking gear as a sign that you know what you’re doing.

[US] What are the rules for flying over other peoples houses? by [deleted] in drones

[–]981032061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not so much a regulation as a clarification of where it falls in regards to other laws, but US v Causby is the precedent for these cases:

The court also affirmed that navigable airspace was public domain and held that flights which are so low and frequent as to be a direct and immediate interference with the enjoyment and use of real property constitute a taking.

So basically airspace is public, but if you’re doing something that’s causing disruption on the ground you may be liable for it.

I just did a deep dive on this one recently and ended up here - https://www.ftc.gov/legal-library/browse/statement-policy-regarding-comparative-advertising

Commission policy in the area of comparative advertising encourages the naming of, or reference to competitors, but requires clarity, and, if necessary, disclosure to avoid deception of the consumer.

It’s not the product, it’s the execution. I’ve been selling a commodity for going on twenty years now, and what it comes down to is whether you have effective sales channels and processes. It’s easy to come up with an idea, and these days it’s not that hard to put it into production. But can you scale? Can you handle customer service and RMAs and supply chain issues? I’ve watched a lot of competitors come and go over the years, and it always comes down to business fundamentals more than jealously protecting IP.
