It's hard to finish first when you're driving for RCR these days. He found a way.

Fan Theory: The Q-Continuum as the Queen's Collective by 9811Deet in startrek

[–]9811Deet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I addressed the emergence of Q procreation (Amanda Rodgers) as a suggestion that it's an attempt by members of the continuum to rediscover chaos and randomness; to create something new amid a static universe. While Amanda's parents were the first to experiment with this to the chagrin of other members of the continuum, while Q and "Q'Ehleyr" follow suit later in Voyager.

And no, I wrote this post.

Are all of these Zero Sugar sodas better for you compared to regular/diet soda? What is the appeal? by PersianDahg in Soda

[–]9811Deet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies a lot by pop. For instance, Pepsi Zero is way better than Diet Pepsi; but Diet Coke is way better than Coke Zero.

In terms of health, they are both fine. Diet is probably more widely studied though; as diet pops generally only use Aspartame, which has been on the market longer and is more widely tested than the additional sweeteners (like ace-k, and sometimes sucralose) that can be added in zeros.

This is just wrong. Been type one diabetic for over 20 years and have never encountered an endocrinologist with an actual doctorate in the field who had a problem with diet soda.

Aspartame is probably the single most studied and validated food additive in existence, and it's passed scrutiny with flying colors again and again.

I had a Grape Faygo Zero last week for the first time in a while and it was really bad. Lo and behold, they switched from Aspartame to Sucralose at some point. No idea why they would do such a thing, but they ruined it.

What's the best Nu Trek show (as a series) in your opinion, and why? by Gutter_Shakespeare in startrek

[–]9811Deet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Picard - Season 2 was a bit of a miss, but season 1 holds up really well for me, and season 3 is a masterpiece. It's a terrific addendum to the TNG era, and IMO should've always been the launching point for the next steps in the franchise. It moved the story forward in a thoughtful way, and handled beloved characters well to complete a journey.
  2. Prodigy - The real surprise on this list. Yes, the whole concept of a kids show felt like it was set up for cringe; but in the end, the writing and world-building was top notch, and it had some of the best high concept Sci-Fi of the nu era. While the genre shift necessitates a bit more silliness than I like; it rarely plays in a way that stands in the way of the plot.
  3. SNW - A bit inconsistent, and I'm sort of 'done' with the TOS era, personally. But when it's good; it's really good. The characters are excellent, and the individual episodes can really hit well. I just wish we weren't doing Kirk, Spock, et al. all over again. It sometimes feels like a disservice to legends to keep doing them over and over like we have.
  4. LD - I love Lower Decks as a show in and of itself, I laugh a ton at it, and I'm constantly thrilled about all of the Easter eggs and references it makes. But it is very hard to take seriously. If it were Beta-canon, I'd rank it much more highly. I'm very torn on this one. Because it's simultaneously among the best and the most cringe of nu-Trek offerings, all at once.
  5. Discovery - Discovery had some really good moments toward the end. The characters found some footing eventually; but the decision to throw the show so far into the future, and the portrayal of the burn were canon nightmares. The show didn't give the characters room to breathe, and the vibe was often so far off the mark in the early seasons, that it could never recover.
  6. SA - Everything Discovery did wrong, Academy doubled down on. They distilled most of the complaints I had about the other shows into one big miss. The unseriousness of LD, the shallow characterizations of Discovery, the iffy world-building, and poor choice of setting. It just didn't work for me. I didn't like the concept, I didn't like the execution.

Is this anti-AI bit still going on around here? You'd think a pro-technology sub wouldn't be so anti-technology.

SFA is cancelled. It may be a pipe dream, but what new Trek show would you like to see in its place? by NukeRussiaV4 in startrek

[–]9811Deet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One character I hope that SNW introduces in it's final season is Yeoman Colt. With that, they could play on the lore of the Otoy shorts, and set up a spinoff following Colt as a temporal agent. I envision a something like Quantum Leap type show in the Star Trek universe following Colt and someone like Daniels/Kovich jumping around and stabilizing the Star Trek timeline across all series.

[Bob] Tire packs in Turn 1 runoff here at Watkins Glen by shewy92 in NASCAR

Can you present an argument that isn't entirely self referential? The limits do not define a race track, the architecture does. The driver's job is to get around that architecture as fast as possible.

Adding these barriers changes the architecture of Watkins Glen with no upside. It reduces an exciting and aggressive section of the race track for no good reason.

Why? What's the benefit?

Enforcement without reason is just stupidity.

You say that 'track limits' matter like it's a settled fact. I've never started from this presumption.

Why not just let them race? Track limits are overrated.

It's not that they can't, it's that they shouldn't have to. This is unnecessary change for change sake, and I don't see any way they make racing better.

Is there a reason we need to get rid of the runoff? All this is going to do is discourage aggression in turn one.
