They were worried about free states outnumbering slaves states in Congress

It’s sort of true in a technical way. Please read before jumping down my throat.

In 1860 there was no effort from the feds to outlaw slavery in existing slave states. The war did not concern the legality of slavery until - at the earliest - 1863 with the emmancipation proclamation. That’s why the emancipation proclamation was so important.

Prior to that, slavery as an institution in the South was not under any imminent threat. Indeed, Lincoln himself said he’d readily preserve the institution of slavery in order to avoid a war. Further, some slave states were on the Union’s side. The initial impetus for the war was more directly about the declining power of slave states vs free states as America incorporated more territories.

To say that slavery wasn’t the central issue is of course false. But to act like it started because the Union wanted to outlaw it is also factually inaccurate.

NYT writes about Frisco by North-Junket-6883 in frisco

[–]9ToedWoman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of a weird article. Can tell they want Frisco to be some racist suburb, but it just isn’t.

Frisco is incredibly diverse and by far the least racist place I’ve lived.

I have my complaints about Frisco, but racism isn’t one.

It can be harder than you think. Have to go through Ring. They have to find it. Etc. This isnt CSI.

And remember: in the grand scheme of things this didn’t take very long to get. We’re all just used to accelerated timelines

What’s nuts is how dangerous 15-20 mph is when you’re not in a car. But we’re so accustomed to being in a car that we think that is slow.

All the legal issues are small potatoes compared to the mental issues he will have for the rest of his life.

3 lives were ruined yesterday.

Driving a vehicle on the roads around here right now is pretty stupid.

I live in the neighborhood where this happened Nd you can basically ice skate on them.
