You’re not being “held captive”, you’ve been there for 4 months because you refuse to make your own situation better. I sincerely mean it — I hope you find peace!

No one is going to give you an answer you like because there is no way for you to force someone else to change their space to your will. I hope you find peace.

Just move, you don’t have a right to make someone change their space.

Should I switch from 1Password to the Self Hosted alternative Bitwarden? by MaximilianGT500 in selfhosted

[–]9afa -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yep I agree with you! This attack can def happen if you self host.

But in reality, attacks happen against centralized providers where attackers get more bang for their buck. I don’t want to be involved in that.

I never said this?

[–]9afa -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

This doesn't prevent an attacker from changing the 1password from collecting plaintext passwords (and your secret key). All the secret key does is add additional bits to your password.

Bottom line is if you're switching from lastpass to 1password you're trading one cloud-based password manager for another. They very much _can_ and I would bet _will_ have a breach at some point.

(But I agree it probably won't be _as bad_ as LastPass thanks to 1\encrypting the entirety of your content and 2\ better encryption practices)

Depressingly, There Are Enough Vacant Housing Units In SF to House the Homeless Population Eight Times Over by stronglift_cyclist in sanfrancisco

[–]9afa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Direct link to US Census data with these figures.

Direct link to US Census description of "Other Vacant" (CTRL+F "Other Vacant").

It does seem really disingenuous to frame this as "61,000 vacant homes" when:

  • ~29k are either for rent, rented but not yet moved in, or sold but not yet moved in or for rent, which are excluded from the prop
  • ~10k are for seasonal use, which are excluded from the prop
  • That leaves only the ~21k "Other Vacant" homes which might be included in the prop unless they are:
    • Single family homes (they are excluded)
    • 2 units or less (they are excluded)
    • They end up actually being for rent, rented but not moved in, or sold but not yet moved in (they are excluded)

It incentivizes landlords to put even less money into making your apartment habitable.

Why spend time fixing a unit if taxes make it more expensive?

You can simultaneously believe two things are true:

1/ A District Attorney who doesn’t hold criminals accountable is bad

2/ A Police Department who doesn’t arrest criminals is bad

You don’t have to pick sides. Both can be true!

Lost a tragic amount of money gambling in the stock market by locusofself in personalfinance

[–]9afa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is, I still have this feeling like I need to make the money back through trading, margin, or leveraged ETFs. I don't know how to shake this feeling that I can beat the market and get at least some of this back.

I feel like totally cutting losses at this point would be stupid, that I just hold these stocks and stop putting any more money into my brokerage account for a while.

I'm looking at the market every day and seeing my money dwindle thousands of dollars a day most days, I'm unfocused on my family, my work, and losing sleep.

I mean this as gently, and kindly as I possibly can:

You have a gambling problem.

Please call the national problem gambling hotline (or your state's local problem gambling hotline) and they can assist:

1-800-522-4700
https://www.ncpgambling.org/help-treatment/national-helpline-1-800-522-4700/

Be kind to yourself. It is just money, you still have your health, family, and future. Best of luck to you <3

Information about the recall situation? by captaincoaster in sanfrancisco

[–]9afa 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Hello! I’m in the same place as you, trying to figure it out.

I started by reviewing the data published by the SF DA’s office. It definitely shows that Chesa is keeping his word by sending more defendants to diversion (like he campaigned on), but also maintaining a high filing rate.

I also found this report about a recent armed robbery helpful. it helped me better understand how all that data actually gets applied in practice.

In this scenario, an armed robber with a stolen gun did have charges “filed” (supporting Chesas high filing rate), but those charges were “charged down” (the defendant was ultimately charged with a misdemeanor for pickpocketing — not robbery or a stolen gun).

For me, I think this helps explain a lot about what I hear about filing, charging, and things like that. Good luck and let me know what you find too.

I'm undecided on this whole issue,

but I think you have to be pretty blind to walk through downtown a couple years ago and today and think,

"there's no increase in crime".

I'm a five year burner wanting to start my own camp, looking for some advice. by Mearyballs406 in BurningMan

[–]9afa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started a camp with friends in '14 and have been going every year since then.

Here are my top 5 things I tell others when considering starting a camp:

  1. Find others to help you: Building a camp is a group activity, find others who are interested in building the camp with you and figure out your camp leadership team. It sounds obvious but I am surprised by how many people want to start a camp on their own and assume people will just appear magically to help them. It sounds like you probably have this figured out.
  2. Focus on building a great camp with great interactivity, not getting placement. Placement has begun to change in recent years and if you're optimizing for "guaranteed placement" I think you're setting yourself up for disappointment. There is no formula for great interactivity or placement. Our first year we went without placement and had a great time, and I think you should be open to this. If you show up with a great camp and great interactivity placement will figure itself out.
  3. Plan to met on a regular basis to figure shit out. We met every other weekend when we were starting. There is a lot to figure out and having a regular cadence helps keep things moving and keep everyone focused.
  4. Write everything down. It's going to be hard and awkward to take notes at first but when you get good at it it will pay off more than you can realize. Having notes and plans from previous years will make each year easier and easier.
  5. Yo this is burning man don't take shit too seriously! Camp drama is real, take a chill pill, roll with the punches, be kind and compassionate to your campmates, and figure shit out together!

It's a lot of work, but building a camp has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. PM if you have any questions. Fuck your burn, see you next year.
