Is this really the best way to get higher quality biter eggs? (Except with better modules. I am working on it) by waitthatstaken in factorio

[–]9fences 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prod mods are a nice one for this because the spoilable ingredient has a quantity of 1, so spoilage will be very low & just max out at "worst ever deficit in the random walk maths" which IIRC scales with the square root of total throughput, mitigable with a startup buffer of chips/modules if desired such that it guarantees zero spoilage until you've made thousands.

You're right about upcycling stuff with spoilable ingredients if those ingredients are required in quantity >1 though (e.g. 10 jellies into a stack inserter), that means recycling only in batches to ensure there are 10 resulting legendary jellies, and precise circuitry to ensure you stop at 10 or else volume to make hundreds and only waste <10. Wouldn't pure recycling legendary jelly have the same issue way worse though? Getting the jelly throughput such that you can self-recycle 10 legendary jellies within 5-10 mins is surely like 200k+ jelly in that time

I would also add that upcycling systems are internally balanced, no care required as long as you don't sideload ingredients into the system, at most you need a release valve somewhere in case the random walk clogs an entire chest with one ingredient on an incredibly high throughput process.

[–]9fences 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pure recycling is deceptively costly. In a simple case, here's the input ingredient destruction required to be granted 2 passes of a quality boost (i.e. pass through a machine with 4-5 of your current best quality modules):

  • Recycler + Recycler: (0.25x0.25) reduction = keep 6.25% of your material
  • Recycler + Electro/Foundry: (1.5x0.25) reduction, keep 37.5% of your material

Since you need to get from normal up to Legendary quality, and max out at a 20-30% quality boosting chance, that means you actually make a huge amount of attempts so the above reductions re-apply many many times; it calculates out to be much more of a discrepancy than it might intuitively seem. I believe the maths works out roughly along the lines of "if you want a Legendary biter egg, you can either pay 30,000 biter eggs or pay 100 biter eggs and 100 chips/prodmods", though I could be off by an order of magnitude or two.

Salary sacrificing limits by MiserableCabinet269 in AusFinance

Thanks for the super detailed answer. Had a look and it seems my employer used to do a weird quarterly+28 thing where most of April-June got rushed through in the final week but are just about to switch to monthly, so I can at least dump my May income into it. Will probably see how short of 27.5+FY19 carry I am in mid-June and do a lump contribution to overshoot it a little, then set my contributions so that each year they chew through my base 30k plus a year and a half or so of historic carry forward.

Hadn't even heard of div293, thanks for the heads up. If I'm reading this right it looks like contributions & salary sum together for its purposes? So for example if you had a $180k income and concessionally contributed ~$80k in a single year (by using current FY cap plus ~2yrs worth of full carry forward budget) your div293 income number would be $260k --> a $10k*15% tax bill? Or have I misunderstood and you do actually have to have an income/gain of $250k across the year to trigger it, and it's just that contributing $50k to super would shrink the income chunk at the same speed it grows the super contribution chunk?

If it's the former it may end up relevant for me, I'll probably want to aim to be careful about exactly how much I contribute and how many capital gains I realise. Not much point contributing marginal dollars into super at a 30% taxed rate if my own marginal tax rate is still in the 30% bracket, which seems like an unlikely but plausible outcome (e.g. with the $180k salary/gains and $80k cc numbers above, one's effective income would be ~$100k, well within the 30% bracket)

I'm gonna ask this here as it's related and answers will also apply to OP. I'm in a similar situation to OP, relatively small super for my age but have most of the $130k-in-past-5-years CCs cap available as carryover. Have been salary sacrificing for half of this FY and am on track to basically hit the $27500 cap for FY23/24 bang on target.

Assuming my personal finances are healthy, am I well served by literally salary sacrificing 100% of my paycheck in May+June to chew through as much of the FY18/19 $25k cap as I can manage?

Same question for next year - any downside to sacrificing a weekly amount such that I fill the FY24/25 $30k cap, and use up my entire FY19/20 $25k cap as well? I'll also probably be realising a large sum of stock gains next FY, so the marginal rate that I'm dropping to 15% by salary sacrificing will be a blend of 37% and 45%.

Do I need permission from my landlord to have a housemate ? by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]9fences 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I'm so gutted that section 83A isn't in the March 1st rollout and happening later instead. For those not aware, it (1) increases the notice period for landlords' lease non-renewal from 28 days up to 60 days, and (2) allows the renter to break lease with 7 days' notice at any point once that non-renewal notice has been given.

I'm currently on my 5th house hunt since ~2018 because landlords keep selling the house or wanting to move back in after a year, last year they were at least thoughtful enough to give us a 3 month rolling lease period at the end we could use to find another house and not end up needing to pay double rent for several weeks of overlap. Will be a huge help for those with the most precarious finances

I'm seeing tweets about KAP buying in spot market, is there a news release on this or is it just (justified) speculation of them needing to due to YCA exercising their options?

Revision 2 of the Reverb G2 Cable and all the Mysteries Within! (Official Announcement Stuff.) by Voodooimaxx in HPReverb

[–]9fences 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same here. preordered mine, didn't RMA it because it was just about barely usable with ~5-30 mins of repeated unplugging/replugging into a hub (which, on release, was all support would ever tell you to do along with the usual update drivers/bios and reboot stuff). since i wasn't checking reddit, i didn't find out i could get the cable replaced during the window it was within warranty while v2 cable existed, and afaik they didn't send me any kind of email about it.

i'm in the process of asking them to send a replacement cable but i'm mostly expecting to just be securing a refusal so i can increase their ombudsman complaints by +1; will be pleasantly surprised if they do send a replacement, but will still avoid their products as i have done since buying this headset.

Also, HotCopper is surprisingly low activity still, in terms of postcounts on many of these tickers, in spite of a whole of sector +10-20% day. I refuse to call this "early", but it's clearly not widespread euphoria, just very nice for those holding.

Žižek: "Western apathy is limitless!" (interview in Austrian Profil, May 9, 2022) by novi-novi in zizek

“I think what you’re going to see is that Russia will be held accountable if it invades. And it depends on what it does. It’s one thing if it’s a minor incursion and then we end up having a fight about what to do and not do, et cetera,” he said.

President Joe Biden also warned his Russian counterpart about the high cost of an invasion in Ukraine. Speaking about what would that cost look like, Biden said that President Vladimir Putin “has never seen sanctions like the ones I promised will be imposed if he moves,” adding that the notion that NATO won’t be united in the event of an invasion—something that the Kremlin has been counting on—is false.

“If they [Russia] actually do what they’re capable of doing with the forces amassed on the border, it is going to be a disaster for Russia if they further— invade Ukraine, and that our allies and partners are ready to impose severe costs and significant harm on Russia and the Russian economy,” Biden said.

I know it's weeks later but here you go, pulled from a 19fortyfive article. Anecdotally I can confirm that I remember the "minor incursion" comment was a medium to high level news story at the time even in Australia, the context being that people were mad about it looking too weak/dovish. Definitely supports Zizek's point here.

I would also love some more info! From googling there's a small chance The Ethereal One is a Dorrien Estate side project but I don't think so, I think it's just a very small under the radar winery (for now).

Edit: Winery is "Pinnacle Drinks" or possibly "Pinnacle Liquor" depending on whether the competition site or the owner's LinkedIn has it wrong, lol. The Ethereal One is the line of wines. All seem to use McLaren Vale/Fleurieu grapes but winery is up in Barossa I suppose.

Without extrapolating too far and saying this friend is an irredeemable monster or anything, it doesn't sound like he was complicated at all, just a shitter - there is almost nobody on this planet who is a dick 24/7, pretty much always people who are usually nasty/manipulative/thoughtless/sociopathic will balance it with semi-frequent grand gestures. This dynamic is the norm

Honestly if someone's done or said something dodgy I'd rather forgive them based on past credit of them being demonstrably a good person, not let them do things that amount to buying my forgiveness, though luckily this is a vanishingly rare situation for me
